• Between 1 billion and 1.8 billion Muslims in
the world
• 2nd largest religion behind Christianity
• Almost all Muslims belong to one of two
major denominations, the Sunni (85%) and
Shi'a or Shi'ite (15%).

• Original language is Arabic
• Sacred text is the Qur'an (Koran)

History
• Founded by Muhammad in Mecca, Saudi
Arabia
• Muhammad receives a revelation from Allah
through the angel Gabriel when he was forty
years old.
• Mohammad begins to preach his visions.
Because of this he is persecuted and flees to
Medina (marks the beginning of the Islamic
calendar)
Muhammad
• Known as the prophet of Islam
• Married a rich wife which allowed him to reflect on life
• Recieves a revelation from Allah

Difference between Sunni and Shi’a Muslims
• Main difference is who is the rightful
successor/leader of Muhammad’s death
• Sunnis follow the Rashidun (rightly-guided
caliphs), which were the first four caliphs
• Shia believe special spiritual qualities have
been granted not only to the Prophet
Muhammad but also to Ali and the other
Imams
