Levi's 50 Shrink To Fit jeans are truly unique. They're about $50, sometimes less and sometimes
more, and if treated properly they will last for years. Also when treated properly, they will have a
truly custom fit and a unique look for every person who wears them. These are in my opinion too
often overlooked. You can buy them at Sears for goodness sake.
When you buy these jeans, Levi's recommends that you get them about 1" larger in the waist. Now
if you want a truly form fitting pair of jeans, buy them in your size. Also, for the inseam, Levi's
recommends that you purchase them 3" longer. Here's the thing, based off of my measurements,
they shrink about 2.5", so when you try them on, plan for that amount of shrinkage.
The fact that they shrink isn't magic or anything. Now days, generally when you buy jeans, they
have gone through a process called sanforization. Which is a process that shrinks the jeans, and
keeps them from shrinking more so that they're the same size when you buy them as they are
after you wash them. Levi's shrink to fit jeans were invented before the process of sanforization
was invented.
So now that you found jeans that fit properly it's time to shrink them. The process is pretty simple.
If you have a bathtub, go ahead and fill it with hot water. Turn those jeans inside out and put them
in the water and make sure they are completely covered with water.
Grab a beer and a sandwich and consume them.
Now that the jeans have soaked for 20 or 30 minutes, go ahead and drain the water out of the tub.
Using a strong hanger, hang the jeans up on the hanger in the shower to let the jeans drip until
they're merely wet, but no longer dripping. This should take about 20 or 30 minutes.
Now lay the jeans out flat on a towel to continue drying. Apply pressure to help squeeze the water
out. Turn the jeans right side out, and do the same. Let them dry until they are merely damp.
Maybe for an hour.
Here is the important part, put those jeans on and wear them for awhile. This is going to help them
shape to your body. If it's warm outside, go outside to help them dry more quickly. If you get sick
of wearing wet jeans after awhile, just hang them to dry, it will be fine.
And that's it! Once they are dry, they are ready to wear. Enthusiasts for this type of denim try to
wash them as little as possible. I'm talking about once every six months. If you can't stand it, and
have to wash them, wash them by themselves, in cold water, on the gentle cycle and hang them to
dry. The more that you wash this type of jeans, the lighter the color they will become.
