GENERAL FUNCTIONS
This position performs journey-level mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, and associated tasks to a fleet of
gasoline and diesel engines, light and heavy-duty vehicles to 40,000 lbs. GVW, and various other motorized and non-
motorized equipments.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP Reports to Lead Mechanic and Maintenance Supervisor
DUTIES
Diagnoses gasoline and diesel engine malfunctions, and performs minor and major repairs to engines and components
Diagnoses malfunctions in power transfer and chassis components (clutch assembly, transmissions, drive lines,
differentials, air and hydraulic brake systems, and suspension items).
Diagnoses malfunctions and repairs electrical systems, e.g. ignition, lighting, instruments, audio-signal devices, etc.
Responds to in-service vehicle failures and affects such measures as necessary on the road to preserve the best interests of
human safety, equipment security, and service integrity.
Performs routine and cyclic servicing tasks, e.g. brake adjustments, lubrications, cooling systems, tire maintenance tasks,
etc.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Journey level automotive machinist certificate of completion of a 2-year community college level gasoline or diesel
engine mechanic course and two years of successful journey level mechanic work experience equal in scope to the
specific duties described. Six (6) years demonstrated journey level mechanic work experience may substitute for
certificated education.
Possess a valid Washington State motor vehicle operator’s license with Intermediate Endorsement.
Possess a valid Washington State School Bus Driver’s Certificate.
Obtain and maintain Defensive Driver Course Certification.
Own and maintain automotive mechanic trade tools as deemed necessary to safely and effectively perform commonly-
assigned tasks.
Knowledge of: technical mechanical terminology and practical function principles of motor vehicle drive and support
systems;
proven and effective diagnostic practices and repair methods for diesel and gasoline engines, drive
train/chassis, and electrical systems;
precision and practical power and hand tools, and shop equipment common to the vehicle maintenance
skill trades.
Ability to: perform all duties in accordance with applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements;
meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations;
work independently;
comprehend and effectively apply mechanical technologies to affect the practical functions of motor
vehicles;
apply condition diagnostic principles and repairs to motor vehicle support and structural components;
use and properly care for mechanical trade power and hand tools and shop equipment;
efficiently use and care for petroleum products, chemical supplies, synthetics, and solid materials
commonly used in the automotive maintenance trade;
exercise prudent judgment supportive to practices and policies.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Mechanics salary classification “C” ($20.89-22.94 per hour) 40 hours per week, for a 261-day annual assignment.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement which requires a membership or representation fee as an
ongoing condition of continued employment after an individual is hired.
