History of President’s Day

Originally known as George

Washington’s birthday in 1796.

Every year President’s day is celebrated

on the third Monday in February, in

which we celebrate all past Presidents.

The two President’s that are given the

most recognition on this day are

George Washington and Abraham

Lincoln.

George Washington

Born on February 22, 1732 and died on December 14, 1799

Commander in Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution

Served as our nations first President from 1789-1797

Abraham Lincoln









Born February 12, 1809

First President to be assassinated in 1865

Issued the Emancipation Proclamation that led to the freeing of the slaves

in the Confederacy

Assignment

Use the Internet to read summaries on Abraham Lincoln and George

Washington. After reading both summaries adopt either summary to

complete the “scavenger hunt” activity. This activity will include questions

about the President that you have chosen.

Objectives: Students will further understand the importance and the significance of

Instruction- Ask the students if they know anything about Presidents Day and the

which will include an explanation of the activity (President’s Day Scavenger

Hunt) after which; the students will begin the assigned work.
