Sheridan’s History

Recognizing the need for a vocational-technical educational facility and exercising the

authority granted by Florida Statutes, The School Board of Broward County, Florida

approved the construction of its first area vocational-technical center in the mid-1960s

on a portion of land located at the southeast corner of Sheridan Street and 56th

Avenue in the City of Hollywood, Florida.

Phase I of Sheridan Vocational-Technical Center (SVTC), as it was originally named, was

officially dedicated on September 14, 1967. Six programs were available to approxi-

mately 200 high school students during the 1967-68 school year. The first graduating

class was in 1969.

During the second semester of the 1969-70 school year, Phase II was completed. The

3

number of programs offered increased to 15 and there were over 500 participating

high school students. By the 1970-71 school year, there were close to 900 secondary

www.SheridanTechnical.com

students in 18 different programs.

SVTC was one of ninety institutions to be accepted as a charter affiliated member of

an eleven-state association of the Committee on Occupational Education of the

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in 1969.

During the school year 1973-74, SVTC became a candidate for accreditation by

conducting a self-study and hosting a visit by an evaluation team from the

Commission on Occupational Education Institutions (COEI). The Center received full

accreditation from COEI in December 1974. A self-study and review of the institution

is conducted every five years for the purpose of developing and applying standards

of quality and procedures for self-improvement. The Center has continuously

maintained full accreditation since 1974.

On February 7, 1982, Phase III of Sheridan was dedicated. Due to the enhancement

and expansion of the facility, Sheridan was able to offer technical training to over

3,000 full-time and part-time high school and adult students.

In June 1999, the names of the three area vocational-technical centers in Broward

County were changed by the School Board, deleting the word “vocational” to more

accurately reflect the level of training programs offered in high wage/high skill

occupations. Sheridan’s official name became Sheridan Technical Center (STC).

In the 2004-05 school year, Sheridan began delivery of career programs in an online format.

eLearning Broward began with two programs offered to 34 students. By the 2007-08 school year

the department had grown to nine programs and 40 courses offered to nearly 1000 students.

Online learning has become an important component to the future of Sheridan

Technical Center. Students appreciate the flexible schedule online learning allows as well as the

ability to continue working full time, caring for a family and still being able to upgrade their job

skills at anytime from anywhere.

Sheridan celebrated 40 years of providing the finest career training to the residents of Broward

County in the 2007-08 school year.

In 1967 Sheridan Technical Center (STC) opened its doors on our beautifully landscaped 18-acre

About Sheridan Technical Center

4 campus in Hollywood, Florida. Sheridan is the oldest of Broward County’s three technical centers.

As a Broward County Public School, STC offers postsecondary workforce development programs

affording students the opportunity to gain skills in high wage, high demand occupational fields

and compete successfully in the local employment marketplace.

The campus is centrally located in Broward County between US 441/SR 7 and I-95 on the corner

of Sheridan Street and 56th Avenue in Hollywood. Sheridan Technical Center can be easily

accessed from I-95. Exit at Sheridan Street and proceed west approximately two miles. Sheridan

is located on the south side of the street.

Hours of operation are from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; and 7:00 a.m.

to 10:00 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. Not all programs are offered on a part-time or evening

basis.

STC provides students full or part-time training using the latest industry-approved technology and

equipment. Thirty-six (36) workforce development programs are offered, including three applied

technology diploma programs and 33 technical certificate programs. Instructors are licensed and

certified teaching professionals. All facilities are accessible to the disabled. A cafeteria and snack

bar are operated by the Culinary Arts Department. The Media Center and classrooms have

computers, networks, and online telecommunications for student and staff use.

A certificate program is defined as a course of study that leads to one or more occupational

completion points or clusters of vocational competencies that qualify a person to enter an

occupation as directed by the state curriculum frameworks. An applied technology diploma is a

course of study that is part of a degree program, is less than 60 credit hours, and leads to

employment in a specific occupation. Technical credit is awarded by STC and college credit is

awarded to the student upon articulation to a community college. STC’s academic support pro-

grams provide instruction in General Educational Development Preparation (GED), English for

Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), and Applied Academics for

Adult Education (AAAE). Other student support services include the Career Assessment Center, Job

Placement Assistance, and Financial Aid to qualified students.

At STC we continue to add a wide array of quality workforce development programs to meet the

ever changing needs of our diverse student population and the current demands of business

and industry. Emphasis is placed on excellence in instruction using teaching and learning

techniques to reach all learning styles.

A typical full-time day for a workforce education adult student is six hours per day, 30 per week.

Adults may also choose to attend on a part-time basis, 15 hours per week during the day. Classes

are on a varied schedule, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday and 5

Wednesday 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Not all programs are offered on a part-time or evening

basis. Many of our programs today are either offered completely online or in a blended format

Testing

The State of Florida has mandated that all students enrolled in a postsecondary program consist-

ing of 450 clock hours or more must meet a minimum basic skill level in reading, mathematics,

and language. Students who enroll in a program offered for career credit of 450 hours or more

shall complete an entry-level examination within the first 6 weeks of admission into the program.

The State Curriculum Frameworks have established the minimum standards for each program.

Basic skills testing is administered following the orientation programs. Students who do not meet

the minimum skills level must remediate and be re-tested before being eligible to receive a post-

secondary adult technical Certificate of Completion or an Applied Technology Diploma.

Transfer Policy

Within the Institution:

Although every effort is made to place students in a program where they are most likely to

succeed, there are occasions when it is in the best interest of the student to transfer to another

program within the department, provided space is available. Students who desire a transfer

from one class or section to another must see a counselor. To effect a transfer, the counselor

completes a Change of Enrollment form. All student performance outcomes pertinent to the

new program standards are transferred.

Experiential Learning/Advanced Placement:

Advanced placement for experiential learning is designed to evaluate learning experiences that

have taken place outside of the classroom or lab. This learning may result from activities such

as previous work experience, employment-related training, volunteering, military service, or

intensive self-directed study.

The department chair and/or instructor completes an assessment of student performance

eLearning Attendance Policy

Broward Technical Centers have the responsibility of preparing our students with the skills to enter

the workforce. Effective work habits are paramount to students’ success. The following is the

minimum level of participation that is expected of all students enrolled in certificate

programs. Each certificate program will provide students with a syllabus and pacing chart

outlining assignments, due dates, and the comparable number of hours the student would have

completed as they relate to program courses or Occupational Completion Points.

Attendance/Participation

In addition to maintaining satisfactory progress according to the course syllabus and pacing chart,

it is expected that students will also maintain attendance/activity in the program. These may be

defined as logging into the course, e-mailing, or having phone or in-person conversations with in-

structors, turning in completed assignments when due, and attending any scheduled classroom

sessions, if included as part of the program description.

Grading System

Evaluations & Grades

Broward Technical Centers’ students are evaluated on their performance

in the classroom and/or in the lab. Copies of these evaluations are main-

tained in the student files located in the Office of Admissions. Upon re-

quest, transcripts of completed courses are also available through the

Office of Admissions. The following system of grading shall be used.
