VC1: Finding out
about
each other
Pakistan / UK partnership
Between now and next May, you are going to
find out about:
the people at your partner school
the area where they live
their country
and you will find out more about people in your
own school, and your own area and country at
the same time.
you will use your maths to find out more about
geography, history, science, citizenship, art,
music, …
November - January
At the end of today’s VC, you will write
down the question your partner school
wants to ask you.
Over the next few weeks, you should
collect data in your own school which will
give them an answer to their question.
As soon as you have the data, send it to
them.
At the next VC, talk about how you
collected the data, and what you found out
about your own school.
What ways are there to collect
data?
researching newspapers or other written
sources
talking to individuals
talking to focus groups
interviews
surveys
face-to-face
phone
mail
email
Who are you going to collect data
from?
It might depend on the question, but
think about collecting data from:
everyone in your class
more than one class
everyone in your grade or year group
more than one grade or year group
the whole school
a few people from all the classes - how
will you decide who to ask?
Alternatively, you could set up small
focus groups and run discussions or
interviews with them.
Resources to help you
On the project website, you will find:
more details on what you are going to
do between now and our next VC in
January
notes on displaying data in tables and
graphs
notes on designing a questionnaire
Asking a good question
1. What is your favourite sport?
2. Which of these sports do you like best?
athletics
football
rugby
swimming
cricket
3. Do you like rugby more than cricket?
Which of these sports do you like
best?
athletics
football
rugby
swimming
cricket
Vote for your favourite sport, and
count how many people vote for
each.
What is misleading about this table
and this graph?
What should we do to improve them?
How can we improve this
question?
Which of these sports do you like
best?
athletics
football
rugby
swimming
cricket
Your question
Spend a few minutes thinking about
whether your question is clear before you
give it to your partner school:
does it ask what you want it to ask?
is it clear what you are asking?
does it exclude anyone?
does it point people to one particular answer?
Reword it if necessary.
So what exactly do you need to do
between now and January 15?
You know now what question the
other school wants you to collect
data for.
Decide who you are going to collect
data from and how you are going to
collect the data over the next two or
three weeks.
As soon as you have the data, send it
to your partner school.
Prepare your presentation for
January 15.
Your presentation for the
VC on 15 January
Tell us
what the question was that you were asked
who you decided to collect data from and why
how you decided to collect the data and why
any problems you encountered and how you
overcame them
use tables and graphs to display your data
draw conclusions from them to help you
answer the question
