Rigs to Reef Project
• AKA – Snapper Reef
• 100 feet of water
• 50 feet of clear water over the highest
point of the reef
• 1989 Cost $370,000.00 (including
donation to State of Louisiana; no well or
process equipment cost)
• Now includes platforms destroyed by
Hurricane Andrew (1992) along with a
host of other reef material

Rigs to Reefs Donation
• State of Louisiana
• 50% of cost savings versus estimated cost of
removal to a scrap yard
• The donation is deposited in an account and
the reef program is run from the interest
earned on the donations
• The donations are not allowed to be spent
per the Louisiana Rigs-to-Reefs charter
• The earnings are spent on buoys, reef
evaluation, etc…

Closing Remarks
• Rigs-to-Reefs are state programs.
• The land composing the reef site is donated by the
federal government to the state.
• Operator’s make a donation to the state based on
50% of cost savings versus conventional scrapping.
• Louisiana has nine planning areas and several SARS
sites.
• All others states run there reef program on a case-
by-case basis.
• Operators should not accept blanket statements or
here say in deciding if reefing is an option.
• Operators should develop a reef plan and submit
for approval.
