Physics

Why choose this subject?

Find out about quarks and the forces that control them. Explore the structure of atoms and the powers that shape our

world. Discover all about waves, energy, light and theories about the structure of the universe through this course.

Entry requirements: An A/B in Science at GCSE, Maths at B grade and C in English at GCSE. C

grades in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Design and Technology, are essential.

Combine this course with: Computing, Art, a Language.

Essential if you go on to: Engineering, Design, Teaching, Research, Mechanics.

Course Description

AS Level PHYSICS

Physics deals with the basic forces and processes that have formed the universe. The elements of Physics that students

learnt at GCSE are studied at a much deeper level. Using mathematics, students develop theories about the structure of

matter, energy and forces, electricity and waves and light.

They learn about:

 The structure of atoms and how protons, neutrons and electrons behave.

 The evidence for quarks and the forces that control them.

 The laws that apply to motion, energy and forces.

 The structure and behaviour of solids, liquids and gases.

External modules are sat in January and June. Students are required to sit two module tests, accounting for 80% of the

marks, and complete a centre-based Practical Skill Assignment, which is allocated 20% of the marks.

The modules are: Particles, Quantum phenomena and Electricity, Mechanics, Materials and Waves.

A2 Level PHYSICS

Physics deals with the basic forces and processes that have formed the universe. The elements of Physics that students

learnt at GCSE are studied at a much deeper level in A2 Physics. Using mathematics students develop theories about the

structure of matter, energy and forces, electricity and magnetism, the evolution of the Universe and waves and light.

The students will study a unit on Fields and Further Mechanics and a unit on Nuclear Physics, Thermal Physics.

This last unit will contain an optional section from the following list:

 Astrophysics

 Medical Physics

 Applied Physics

 Turning Points in Physics

External module tests are sat in January and June. Students are required to sit two module tests, accounting for 80% of the

marks, and undertake a series of practical assignments, which are allocated 20% of the marks.
