The Department sent to the Federal Register the revised notice of proposed program requirements for the $3 billion Title
I School Improvement Grants program.
The Department has received over 200 comments regarding the Notice of Proposed priorities on www.regulations.gov
for the $4.35 billion Race to the Top competitive grant program; the public comment period ends August 28.
The Department conducted a conference call to discuss Race to the Top with governors, Chief State School Officers, and
State Board of Education leaders on August 20, and with state legislators on August 21.
The Department participated in a conference call regarding Race to the Top hosted by EdWeek on August 20th, with close
to 4,000 estimated participants.
The Secretary discussed the Department’s $650 million Investing in Innovation Fund in a speech to the America's Choice
Superintendents' Symposium.
The Notice Inviting Applications for the $60 million Impact Aid competitive grant program was published in the Federal
Register on August 17.
To accompany the accelerated $11.37 billion release of the second half of Title I, IDEA, and Vocational Rehabilitation
formula grant funding on or around September 1, the Department sent to OMB for review the guidance document “Using
Title I, Part A Recovery Funds for Grants to Local Educational Agencies to Strengthen Education, Drive reform, and
Improve Results for Students.”
Major Planned Actions (Short bulleted list of the major planned actions)
The Department will conduct a conference call to discuss Race to the Top with state legislators on August 27 and with governors,
Chief State School Officers, and State Board of Education leaders on August 28.
The Department will conduct the third in a series of Technical Assistance Webcasts designed to assist ED grantees and sub-
grantees in managing ARRA grants on August 24; the topic will be Cash Management.
The Secretary will announce in an August 26 conference call with states and school districts the proposed criteria for the $3
billion in ARRA funding for the Title I School Improvement Grants program.
