In this Japanese Learning Guide article, I'm going to take a little break from all the grammar and
language itself and hopefully inspire you learn by giving you my top five fantastic reasons to learn
Japanese.
1. Bilingual Career Opportunities
The first great reason to learn Japanese is to put yourself in a position to embark on an exciting
Japanese/English bilingual career. Japan has the second largest economy in the world, and
dominates the global market with brands like Sony, Honda, Nintendo, Toyota, and many
others. Japan also has a rapidly aging population, which means that in the coming years,
there is expected to be an increasing shortage of labor in Japan. This means more
job opportunities for foreigners.
Adding the ability to speak Japanese fluently to your resume will exponentially increase your job
opportunities in fields like IT, finance, engineering, medicine, biotech, marketing, and sales,
just to name a few hot fields where there is a great demand for bilingual talent in
Japan.
2. Japanese Foreign Exchange Program
If you're a college student, or even if you are not one at the moment, there are many opportunities
to take part in a foreign exchange program and study for a year or even more at a university
in Japan. Although it is technically possible to participate in these programs with no prior
knowledge of Japanese, when submitting your application to take part in these programs,
the screening committees will almost always give priority to persons who are
already studying Japanese, as this reflects a deep and committed interest to Japan and its
language and culture.
Plus, your foreign exchange experience will be far more rewarding if you already have a basic
grasp of Japanese, as this will increase your opportunities to communicate with native
speakers tenfold.
3. Enhance Your Japan Travel Experience
Are you thinking about traveling to Japan? Well, it's true that you can eek by as a traveler without
knowing more than a word or two of Japanese. However, any foreign travel experience is
greatly enhanced when you can actually communicate with the people who live there. Part
of the fun of traveling to a foreign land is the challenge of communicating, whether it be
simply ordering food at a restaurant, asking directions, or striking up a conversation at a bar
with some locals. Plus, the reality is that most Japanese do not speak English very well, so the
more Japanese you can speak, the smoother your Japan travels will be.
4. Impress Your Friends, Order Sushi!
Let's face it. It's pretty damn cool to be able to speak an exotic Asian language like Japanese.
Imagine taking a date out for sushi and rattling off an order in Japanese to the sushi chef?
Speaking from personal experience, I've spoken fluent Japanese for so long now that I don't
even give it a second thought, but people I've just met are always surprised and impressed
when I suddenly take a call in Japanese or strike up a conversation with my
Japanese friends. Having the ability to speak Japanese will set you apart from the crowd,
open up some new doors, and maybe even help you score on your date!
5. Meet Japanese Women (or Men)
This final reason is directed at guys, but it certainly applies to women as well. The ability to speak
Japanese will give you the opportunity to meet an entire population filled with some of the
world's most beautiful women, very many of whom are EAGER to meet a foreigner just like
yourself! Japanese women will be very impressed by your efforts to learn their language,
and will enthusiastically engage in fun language exchange correspondence that very often
leads to romance.
Whatever YOUR reason for learning to speak Japanese, I can tell you from experience that your
life will be greatly enriched from having made the effort! So what are you waiting for? Don't
waste another second. Start learning Japanese today!
