The i n f o r m a t i o n contained i n t h i s r e p o r t i s a summary o f f r e s h market

vegetable research conducted a t Harrow, O n t a r i o d u r i n g t h e summer o f 1988.

Growing c o n d i t i o n s d u r i n g t h i s season were v e r y unusual w i t h r e c o r d h i g h

temperatures throughout t h e season and a severe drought d u r i n g May, June and

e a r l y July. Moisture c o n d i t i o n s from m i d J u l y on, were adequate f o r most

crops. However most e a r l y m a t u r i n g vegetable crops i n t h e area were h u r t by

t h e drought.





The t r i a l s r e p o r t e d here were grown on a Fox sandy loam s o i l , which i s

r e p r e s e n t a t i v e o f t h e s o i l types used f o r f r e s h market vegetable p r o d u c t i o n i n

t h e area. These p l o t s were i r r i g a t e d s e v e r a l t i m e s u s i n g overhead s p r i n k l e r

i r r i g a t i o n . I n general, y i e l d s i n a l l t h e crops were comparable t o those o f a

normal season, d e s p i t e t h e adverse c o n d i t i o n s . The p l a s t i c mulch, d r i p

i r r i g a t i o n t r i a l s (pages 23-32) were n o t s p r i n k l e r i r r i g a t e d as f r e q u e n t l y as

o t h e r t r i a l s i n order t o b e t t e r e v a l u a t e t h e i n f l u e n c e o f t h e d r i p i r r i g a t i o n

system. Y i e l d s i n t h e check p l o t s i n t h i s t r i a l were lower than normal. A

c u l t i v a r t r i a l o f shrunken-2 sweet c o r n h y b r i d s was planted, b u t was

d i s c o n t i n u e d due t o poor stands. I n o r d e r t o g e t adequate i s o l a t i o n t h e t r i a l

had t o be p l a n t e d i n a f i e l d which c o u l d n o t be i r r i g a t e d ' and germination was

poor i n most v a r i e t i e s . D e t a i l s o f o t h e r c u l t u r a l p r a c t i c e s used i n

e s t a b l i s h i n g these t r i a l s a r e i n c l u d e d w i t h t h e r e s u l t s .

PLASTIC MULCH, ROW COVER AND D R I P IRRIGATION TRIALS



These t r i a l s were conducted t o e v a l u a t e t h e i n f l u e n c e o f p l a s t i c mulches,

row covers and d r i p i r r i g a t i o n systems on t h e p r o d u c t i o n o f f r e s h market

vegetable crops. The b e n e f i t s o f t h i s new t e c h n o l o g y have been demonstrated

i n o t h e r v e g e t a b l e p r o d u c i n g areas. However, growers i n O n t a r i o have been

r e l u c t a n t t o adapt .these systems due t o t h e h i g h c o s t i n v o l v e d . These t r i a l s

w i l l be repeated over a number o f y e a r s t o determine i f t h e use o f p l a s t i c s

and d r i p i r r i g a t i o n i s c o s t e f f e c t i v e o v e r a range o f environmental

conditions.
