Univision Original Air Date August 17, 2009 Host - We want to show you this story about the
Cash for Clunker program. It has helped so may but others claim to have been deceived. Berenice
Gartner with ‘Channel 41 on your side’ to investigate the complaints of a viewer that did not receive
funds for his clunker.
Reporter - Thank you very much. The clunker does not show up and neither does the money. The dealer
the car was taken to does not even qualify because they only sell used cars.
****
41 on Your Side came to find the clunker for Mr. Jose Colon. However in this dealership were he
dropped off the car the government credit does show up and neither does the sales person.
***
Mr. Colon - I am really happy with the car, what I’m not happy with is the person that deceived me.
Reporter - Mr. Colon assures us that after turning over the car title, a salesman from this dealership
(Dancy-Power Automotive Group) in Manhattan referred him to another in New Jersey to choose the
new car he wanted. However they never discounted the $3,500 from the sale price of the new car which
he was entitled to.
Mr. Colon - He said “What $3,500, you exchanged the car for Zero Percent finance because of that you
don’t have the old car “. They gave him Zero Percent for his good credit. Is what the New Jersey
dealership told us, they knew nothing about the clunker.
Mr Ucles – we are now investigating many of these incidents.
Reporter - Mr. Ucles from the Cash-for-Clunker program told us they have received dozens of complains
about dealerships.
Mr. Ucles - so they know for every bad transaction, for every illegal deal, for every fraudulent activity
that the dealership will be fined $15,000 per incident.
Reporter – they recommend buyers to :
Compare Prices in different dealerships.
Not to mention the clunker until the end.
First negotiate the price.
Review each clause on contact.
Remember the Government discount needs to be deducted from the total receipt.
Mr. Colon – ‘’ And I asked where is my clunker? The sales people replied is gone”
Repoter – the clunker never appeared but the money did. The car dealership admitted they had made a
mistake and decided to give back the $3,500 to Mr. Colon that he was entitled to under the program. If
