There is a new term for your Urban Dictionary, one I think you should learn; Pocket Farming. This
is where folks who live in the city and urbanized suburbs use up every little space of land to grow
food. They often have these little Pocket Farms, where urban residents grow fruit and vegetables
in the alley ways. Some sell their produce at street fairs and organic farmers markets, while others
trade with neighbors so everyone saves money on produce.
Still there are issues with a runoff, as nitrates from the fertilizer go into storm drains. Remember,
all this agricultural runoff drains to somewhere, and it can cause fungus and other problems, as
rotten, smelly food runs into the storm drains and down into the gutters. Worse, the bugs come in
to feast as well, and standing water causes more mosquitoes, and that can be a problem
considering SARS, West Nile, and all the other things mosquitoes are known for spreading.
Other opponents of this urban pocket farming say that too many people growing stuff in soil that
could be contaminated also causes health issues. The urban farmers say it's better than the stuff
they buy in the store, and you cannot beat the cost of growing your own. During the recession,
most code enforcement departments of the various cities are letting it go, considering it a freedom
issue to grow on your own property.
Of course, as you might have guessed many of these folks are planting beyond their property lines
in spaces between property or actually, technically on rights-of-way or municipal property. It's
becoming an issue, so I thought you should know.
