At times, living with social anxiety disorder (SAD) can make you feel like you're all alone in the
world. When a person lives with SA for many years, it may come to a point when they feel like
giving up or even in extreme cases contemplating suicide. Thankfully there is plenty of social
anxiety support available.
Some days are better than others when dealing with this disorder. On the tougher days, it helps to
have a support team. This article will discuss 3 different sources that I used to build my social
anxiety support team while overcoming SAD:
1.) Social anxiety support forums on the internet are filled with people who suffer from and have
overcome SAD. They share their experiences and steps they are taking to cope with the disorder.
Online support can be very helpful and give you new perspectives on how to deal with SA. Also,
sharing your experiences, difficulties, and achievements with others (anonymously) can be a
successful form of therapy.
2.) Social anxiety support from friends and family is a crucial part of the team. Having support from
the ones you love is critical in dealing with any kind of problem, especially so SAD.
Being that it is so difficult to communicate with strangers, having a friend or a family member who
understands the difficulties you face in social situations plays a key part in the road to recovery.
*For this to be the most effective your friend or family member should take the time to educate
themselves about the SAD.
3.) Social anxiety support from yourself is the most important part of the whole team. In order to
overcome SAD you need to set goals and keep yourself aligned with your goals.
"Inch by inch is a cinch, yard by yard it's hard."
Setting small bite sized goals is an easy way to not only deal with SAD it can help you overcome it
as well. I would set small goals for myself and gradually build up to larger ones.
For example I would set a goal to say "Hi" with a smile to 10 strangers a day for a whole week.
The next week I would set a slightly larger goal, asking 10 random strangers per day a question
like "do you know what time it is?"
Just like sports teams win championships when they work as a team, you can be the champion
over SA by working as a team.
No one should have to live like a social prisoner. Are you ready to finally get rid of S.A.D forever?
