University of Iowa Children’s Hospital 2008 Annual Report on Giving

Dear Friends,
e are delighted to present the very first University of Iowa
W
Children’s Hospital Annual Report on Giving. This report gives a
glimpse into the impact philanthropy has had on the many
changes and new directions for Ui Children’s Hospital
during the past few years. We have seen unprecedented
growth in our clinical enterprise, development of new initiatives, expansion
of our research programs, and addition of more trainees to our already
vibrant educational mission.
along with these programmatic changes have come new leadership,
a new name and logo (in case you haven’t noticed, we are no longer called
Children’s Hospital of iowa), expansion of our service area, and the
formation of University of iowa Children’s Hospital Council. We initiated
the Council in 2006 to help spread the word about all of the great work that
is going on in your children’s hospital and to engage our communities in
helping to set our direction and course for the future.
University of iowa Children’s Hospital serves as the safety net
for iowa’s kids—providing advanced technologies and expert medical,
surgical, and nursing care for our most critically ill and severely
injured children. Our commitment to the highest quality, compassionate,
family-centered care is unparalleled. We are partnering with community
providers to ensure that every child has access to the medical services that
they need, either in their hometown or here in iowa City.
We have bold plans and big dreams for the future. One of the most
exciting events looming on the horizon is the building of a new facility to
house Ui Children’s Hospital. We are well on our way, having recently
selected the architectural and planning firms and we are in the midst of
planning the site and scope for the new Children’s Hospital. Planning and
design will take approximately 18 months, and we anticipate the actual
building phase to last about 3 years. stay tuned as we move forward with what
will be a transforming event for pediatric health care for iowa’s children.
None of these accomplishments (and plans for an amazing future)
would be possible without the help of so many civic-minded and visionary
supporters—givers like you. The stories we share in this report are examples of what we can achieve together as we work to
improve the health and well-being of the children we serve. We are proud of the road we have traveled with you over the past
few years and we are excited about moving forward together as we plan for a new Ui Children’s Hospital.
Thank you for your interest and support.
Warm regards,

‘Aiming for a Cure’ is Right on Target Again in 2008
The fifth annual “Aiming For A Cure” event held March 15-16 at Highland Hideaway
Hunt Club near Riverside, Iowa, raised $155,000 to help UI Children’s Hospital in its
fight against pediatric cancer. More than 20 local and national celebrities took part in
the sold-out bird-hunting and sporting-clays event. When cancer patient Ben Ries died
at age 12, his parents, Steve and Jodie Ries of Central City, Iowa, organized “Aiming For
A Cure” to support the hospital’s pediatric bone marrow transplant program through
an activity they enjoyed—hunting with dogs. While Ben underwent cancer treatment, he made a list of items he thought other
patients at UI Children’s Hospital would enjoy. Through a shopping spree supported by the Aiming For A Cure Foundation,
Ben’s wish list of distraction and entertainment items for patients is now a reality. In addition, the Aiming For A Cure Foundation
funds grants for pediatric cancer research being conducted at UI Children’s Hospital and give financial support to families of
children undergoing cancer treatment.

Dance Marathon Events Set New Record for Funds Raised
From January through April 2008, thousands of students at The University of Iowa, Iowa State University, Loras College
in Dubuque, and Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., raised nearly $1.28 million through Dance Marathon events to
benefit UI Children’s Hospital. Dance Marathon at the UI crossed the $1 million mark for the first time, raising $1,003,646.
Students involved in Dance Marathon events at all campuses provide emotional and financial support to families treated at
UI Children’s Hospital. Dollars raised through the University of Iowa event provide funding to specifically address the needs
of pediatric cancer patients and advance cancer treatment through research, while proceeds from other schools support
treatment for ailments such as traumatic injuries, heart disease, and metabolic disorders, as well as fund patient and family
support items and services.

In July 2007, $1.1 million in support over four years from Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club associates
culminated in the dedication of an expanded Neonatal Care Unit at UI Children’s Hospital.
The new 15-bed unit houses babies who are in a lower-risk category, but can still benefit
from specialized care provided by Neonatal Care Unit staff members. In addition, the new
unit offers space for very low birth weight babies to stay while their parents learn specialized
hands-on skills before taking their babies home. The support for this expansion was part of
Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club national sponsorship of Children’s Miracle Network, with which
UI Children’s Hospital has been affiliated for more than 20 years.

Kohl’s Goes WILD for Kids
Kohl’s department stores have contributed nearly $1 million to programs at
UI Children’s Hospital over the past eight years through their Kohl’s Care for
Kids endeavor. The 2007-2008 fiscal year was the second year of the Kohl’s
WILD (Wellness is Learning and Doing) Kids Project, which engages children
and their families in healthy snacking and fitness activities. More than 3,000
children from across the region learned how to make good dietary choices
and develop active lifestyles. The Kohl’s WILD Kids Project is a partnership
effort among UI Children’s Hospital, Neighborhood Centers of Johnson

Radiothons Bring Out the Best in Stations’ Listeners
Between August 2007 and May 2008, on-air radio personalities at stations from Des Moines to Dubuque to the Quad
Cities to Cedar Rapids and Iowa City inspired their listeners to donate nearly $587,000 to support UI Children’s Hospital.
Gifts to these radiothons have helped purchase medical equipment designed especially for children; fund research to
find cures and treatments for childhood illnesses; provide toys, games, and activities to brighten the lives of hospitalized
children; and enable teenage patients to gather in their own Teen Lounge, a place to share time and make friends with
others who are facing similar health challenges.
