Compare Cholesterol Drugs and Make a More Informed Choice

Generally, a doctor will ask you to make diet and lifestyles changes first, before prescribing
cholesterol medication. Unless of course, you have dangerously high cholesterol levels, in which
case, you will be immediately prescribed a cholesterol lowering drug. It is very important though,
for you to compare cholesterol drugs, so that you that make a more informed choice, to benefit
your overall health.

There are various drugs that can lower blood cholesterol levels. Sometimes, they are prescribed
individually or sometimes in combination with other drugs. Let's compare cholesterol drugs
available today and see what benefits they have:

Statins
Statins are the most commonly prescribed cholesterol lowering drug. They work in the liver to
prevent cholesterol forming. They are most effective at lowering LDL cholesterol (bad), but have
little effect on lowering blood fats or raising HDL cholesterol (good).

There are side effects associated with statins, muscle problems and abnormalities in the liver.
Liver function tests have shown raised liver enzymes. Anyone with chronic liver disease should not
take statins.

Various statins prescribed are Lipitor, Lescol, Zocor, Crestor to name but a few, and statins can
also be found in combination drugs, such as, Advicor, Caduet, and Vytorin.

Fibrates (fibric acid derivatives)
When we compare cholesterol drugs, another one that springs to mind is fibrates. Fibrates can in
some cases increase HDL cholesterol levels, and are best at lowering triglycerides. Unfortunately
though, these particular drugs are not very effective at lowering LDL cholesterol. Fibrates are
sometimes used in combination therapy with statins.

Niacin (nicotinic acid)
Niacin is another cholesterol drug which also works in the liver, by affecting the production of
blood fats. It is generally prescribed to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and raise HDL
cholesterol.

Unfortunately, niacin has side effects, which includes itching, flushing and stomach pain. It can
also cause toxicity in the liver, so it is vital to have regular liver function tests.

Resins (also known as bile acid binding drugs)
This type of cholesterol drug works in the intestines, by increasing the disposal of cholesterol. Our
bodies use cholesterol to make bile, which is an acid used in the digestive process. This drug
binds to the bile, so it cannot be used during digestion. The liver, in turn, will make more bile. And
the more bile the liver makes, the more cholesterol it will use up. Thus minimising the amount of
cholesterol left to circulate though the blood.

Examples of resins prescribed are Questran, Welchol, Colestid, Locholest to name a few.

You know, when we compare cholesterol drugs such as the above, the common factor they all
have, is that they impact on some other area of the body. They either impair functioning of another
area, or they make another area work unnaturally. All of which takes a huge toll on your health
long term. Forcing the body to do things it would not normally do, will cause other health problems.

As a result, more and more people, are taking the healthier option, and looking towards natural
supplements, rich in cholesterol lowering nutrients, to deal with cholesterol problems. Some quality
supplements have proven to not only lower LDL cholesterol, increase HDL cholesterol and lower
triglycerides, but have provided additional health benefits in other areas.

The bonus of taking a natural cholesterol lowering supplement, is of course, no side effects, and
they nourish the body.

Now that you know this, take some time, compare cholesterol drugs you have been using with the
information provided above, and make a more informed choice. Visit my website today for the
healthier option.
