Ubuntu Gathering Center Campaign Information to WMC Churches
The GR District AU Task Force is assembling informational materials, including a DVD that will be sent to the
remaining WMC churches to promote this project to members and friends. These information packets are on
target to be mailed on August 15. The Ubuntu Gathering Center campaign has raised more than $307,000 in
cash and pledges toward the $500,000 goal largely from GR District churches! Arrangements have been
made with the United Methodist Foundation of Michigan to house the collected funds until the campaign ends

Red Bird Mission Appalachian Craft Fair August 13-14 at Dunes UMC
One-of-a-kind, handmade Appalachian arts and crafts “made the old-fashioned way” by artisans who have
passed down carving, painting, candle-making, craft-making, sewing and weaving skills from generation-to-
generation in Kentucky will be featured at an upcoming Red Bird Mission fundraising event at United
Methodist Church of the Dunes (UMC-Dunes) on August 13 and 14. UMC-Dunes is located at 717 Sheldon
Road in Grand Haven. The event will be held Saturday, August 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday, August
14 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The general public is invited and encouraged to attend the Red Bird Mission

Special Presentation at Coopersville UMC
On Sunday, August 14 at 10am, Coopersville UMC, 105 68th Ave. N. in Coopersville, will host a speaker from
the Women At Risk, International (WAR, Int'l) organization. Women At Risk, International (WAR, Int'l) is a
nonprofit organization established to place circles of protection around women at risk. The purpose and
passion of this organization is to wrap arms of love around women and children, whispering the message that
they were created for purpose and dignity. Creating safe places for women and children rescued from many
abuses including human trafficking/sexual slavery, WAR, Int'l desires to give voice to their silenced cries.
There will by jewelry and crafts available for purchase at our church. These items are made by the women

Veggie Tales VBS at Twin Lake UMC
Twin Lake UMC, 5940 S. Main, will be voyaging into a Veggie Tales VBS August 15-18 from 6-8pm. Kids
ages 3 through 5th grade can come and learn about the heroes of the Bible and learn that they are heroes
too! There will be games, food, crafts, music, and storytelling. The kids will present all they learn in a program
on Thursday, August 18 from 7:30-8pm with cookies and punch to follow. Alongside this exciting time of VBS
for kids, a parenting class by Love INC will run August 15-17 from 6-8pm. So bring the whole family for a week

Moms Alive! Rockford UMC Mom’s Group
Rockford UMC would like to invite you to our mom's group called Moms Alive! Moms Alive! is for moms with
kids of all ages! We meet every Tuesday morning from 9:30-11:30am in the church lounge. The meeting
schedule follows the Rockford School calendar and only meets on school days. The first meeting is Tuesday,
September 13 and will include devotions, snacks along with planning the fall calendar. Child care is provided!
Donations are accepted to pay for our childcare coordinator. The mission of Moms Alive! is to provide a social
and supportive atmosphere for mothers in a Christian setting through education and outreach.

Director of Christian Education
Grandville UMC is receiving resumes to fill the part time position of Director of Christian Education. The
selected candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in education, ministry, or a related field. This position will be
responsible to inspire, motivate, coordinate, train, and support our volunteers in the areas of Children’s
Ministry, Youth Ministry, and Adult Faith Formation. This candidate’s success and the success of our
programs will be based on their ability to organize, pre-plan, and guide our volunteers. This individual would
be looked at as the go to person for curriculum, ideas and fresh new directions. This person would also be
responsible for direct supervision of our nursery staff and our Kid’s Hope USA Director and would work under
the direction of our Pastor with the guidance of our Christian Education Committee. Salary ranges from

VIM Haiti Team forming for Baudin Agricultural School
Dave Selleck has returned from Haiti and is working out details for another mission trip to the school. The
next group will be a maximum of 8 persons. The construction at the school will focus on rails for cement steps
for safety, roof work with drainage issues and some sidewalks between buildings as recommended by Lauren
James of UMCOR. There is interest in having part of the team provide a VBS experience, with the elementary
school. The estimated dates to go are February 3 – 12, 2012, depending on travel arrangements. Cost and

Thrive: A New Refugee Support Program at South Wyoming UMC
Thrive is up and running at South Wyoming UMC thanks to a generous start-up grant from GR Metro
Ministries. Thrive is currently assisting with transportation for refugee children to a local summer tutoring
program and working through a cultural broker program to partner people with refugee families. They are also
exploring other areas to move into through discussions with community partners and hope to begin a new set

GR District UMW Mission Evening on August 11
You’re invited to attend the GR District UMW Mission Evening tomorrow, Thursday, August 11 from 6:30-

Hands Across the City Event on Saturday, October 1
The Hands Across the City event, called "La Nueva Esperanza: New to the Neighborhood," will be held
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1 from 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM at 1933 Buchanan St. SW (the former Olivet UMC
building). The day will include:

The next round of Lay Speaking classes for the GR District will be in held in October with both Basic and
Advanced classes offered. There is a 10 student per class minimum, so please register before September

West Michigan Conference Funding 2013
This application form and timeline have been developed for all churches and ministries seeking funding from
the budget of the West Michigan Conference. Please use the attached form and submit it to both your district
office and the Conference Center no later than September 9, 2011, in order to be considered for the 2013
budget. The same form is to be used for requests for funding from your District, the Conference Board of
Global Ministries, and Racial Ethnic Local Church. You need to submit only one form for these groups. Click

Africa University Choir Opens World Gathering
A 30-member Africa University Chamber Choir officially opened the 20th World Methodist Conference in
Durban, South Africa on Aug. 4. With the South African hymn “Siyahamba” (“We are marching in the light of
God”), the choir led the traditional banner procession of the various members of the World Methodist Council
participating in the global conference. More than 1,800 delegates from 58 countries were part of the historic
event, which concluded on Monday, Aug. 8. The conference theme was “Jesus Christ for the healing of the

Hispanic Heritage Month Resources
Hispanic Heritage month kicks off Sept. 15 and Rethink Church will offer resources to assist the dialogue in
worship, Sunday school and community gatherings. The resources, which will be available for download
beginning Aug. 15, are designed to educate, connect and motivate. The Hispanic Heritage package will
include videos that can be used as sermon illustrations, study material or neighborhood Bible studies to help

UMCOR Needs School Kits
The latest shipment of school kits to Haiti has "seriously depleted" the stockpile kept by the United Methodist
Committee on Relief, which is encouraging congregations to use kit-making as a group project or activity. The
kits, which cost about $11 each to assemble, provide children with basic supplies such as paper, pencils and
other items. Learn more about assembling school kits or make a gift toward the purchase of materials. Rays
of Hope in Grand Rapids is a collection point for school kits, health kits, cleaning buckets, layette infant kits,
and dry foods. Their address is 446 Grandville Avenue SW, Grand Rapids, 49503. Please contact Kim

9am-5pm and Sat, 10am-4pm. When kits are brought to the warehouse, please be prepared to help pack

GBHEM Announces Online Consortium with 13 UM Theological Schools
The online consortium catalogue will serve as the gateway, providing a single entry point through an online
catalogue and Web links to each theological school that is offering the classes. It will be open all year round
so you will be able to take courses according to your schedule.

Pastor-Centered to Program-Focused Workshop
One of the most difficult transitions for both pastors and congregations is from a pastor-centered size
congregation to a program-focused community. This workshop is designed for pastors moving from one size
to the other or a congregation that is experiencing growth from one to the other. The pastor and at least one
lay person are encouraged to attend this two-day workshop in Evanston from September 30-October 1. For

Executive Leadership Education Program Offered
Six seminars developed in partnership with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University
designed to increase leadership impact through concentrated study and theological reflection on key themes

GBHEM Presents Exploration 2011—11-11-11: Passion and Possibilities
Exploration 2011 is an event for 18-26 year olds who are exploring ordained ministry in The United Methodist
Church. There are 13 UMC-affiliated seminaries across the United States, from coast to coast.
