Revelation is not information about divine things;

it is the ecstatic manifestation of the Ground of

Being in events, persons and things. Such

manifestations have shaking, transforming and

healing power. They are saving events in which the

power of the New Being is present.

– Theologian Paul Tillich

This Is God’s House. All Are Welcome.

AUGUST 30, 2009

10:00 AM

As people enter the sanctuary they are encouraged to greet each other and

share the gifts of friendship and love. When the prelude begins, all are invited to begin personal

preparation for worship. Please silence mobile phones, pagers and other electronic devices.

ORGAN PRELUDE: Prelude and Fugue in G Major, Op. 37, No. 2

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847

*CALL TO WORSHIP Elder Debbie Mullins

Liturgist: As our Creator spoke to the Hebrews saying, “I am the Lord your

God”, so he lays claims to us in a bond of love.

Ministers:** As God summoned the people to the holy mountain, so does he still

summon us to gather to worship, to listen to his voice.

Liturgist: Let each of us here affirm God’s love, declaring in our heart, “Speak,

Lord, for your servant hears.”

All: Let us joyfully worship God!

*HYMN 478: Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven

*CALL TO CONFESSION The Rev. Paul T. Rock

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God, scripture is like a mirror in which we see ourselves reflected. We confess we

are like Mary, who has made a long habit of shirking duties in favor of wisdom. We

acknowledge we whine like Martha, “Tell her to help me!” when the burden of

service saps our strength. We admit like the elder brother, we may hold grudges

forever against a prodigal brother, and refuse to recognize God’s long standing

mercies in our own lives. We like Martha, may let our busy lives distract us from the

essential and the holy. O God, help us this morning to sit at Jesus feet and learn in

peace. We acknowledge before you Lord our sinfulness and brokenness. Forgive us,

heal us, restore and renew us. Grant O God, that we may forget our wounds,

celebrate your work in others, and serve you with single-mindedness in love, in the

name and for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Silent Reflection and Confession

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*SUNG RESPONSE (Hymn #138, stanza 3) Choir and Congregation

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee

Though the eye of sinfulness Thy glory may not see,

Only Thou art holy; there is none beside thee

Perfect in power, in love and purity.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Pastor: The peace of Christ be with you.

Ministers:** And also with you.

* Please stand. ** All Christians are Ministers of the Faith.

The community stands to sing the hymns at the sounding of the first notes from the organ.

SERMON: “Rub A Dub Dub”

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: From A Brief Statement of Faith of the PC(USA)

We trust in God,

whom Jesus called Abba, Father.

In sovereign love God created the world good

and makes everyone equally in God's image

male and female, of every race and people,

to live as one community.

But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator.

Ignoring God's commandments,

we violate the image of God in others and ourselves,

accept lies as truth,

exploit neighbor and nature,

and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care.

We deserve God's condemnation.

Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation.

In everlasting love,

the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people

to bless all families of the earth.

Hearing their cry,

God delivered the children of Israel

from the house of bondage.

Loving us still,

God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant.

Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child,

like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home,

God is faithful still.

*HYMN 276: Great Is Thy Faithfulness

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Rev. Rock

THE LORD’S PRAYER (“...and forgive us our debts...”)

OFFERING

OFFERTORY: Gilbert M. Martin (b.1941)

When I survey the wondrous cross

On which the Prince of glory died,

My richest gain I count but loss,

And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,

Save in the death of Christ my God!

All the vain things that charm me most,

I sacrifice them to his blood.

See from his head, his hands, his feet,

Sorrow and love flow mingled down!

Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,

Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,

That were a present far too small;

Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all! Amen! (Text: Isaac Watts)
