Support grou p located at Williamstown, Victoria. The position primaril y involves the
development and conduct of Marine Engineering Auxiliary system training. In
addition the occupant will be expected to provide technical input to the total range of
ILS activities.
The successful applicant will have a sound theoretical knowledge and experi ence in the
maintenance of the following marine equipment: Steeri ng, Stabilisers, RAST, Air,
Fuel, Lube oil , cooling water and associated mechanical auxi li ary systems. A
background in RAN FFG marine engineering maintenance would be advantageous.

      Five major RAN neel unils ha ve sailed from Syd ney,
    bound for a month· long five· nation exercise off Hawaii.
    Exercise RIMPA C 94 involves navies from Australia,
    United Siaies of America, So ulh Korea, Japan and
    Canada and begins on May 23.
       Leading the RAN Task Group from Sydney were the guided mi s-
    sile frigates (FFGs) HMAS SYDNEY (commanded by Commander
     R.M. McMillan) and HMAS DARWIN (CMDR L. N. Pataky).
       Sail in g the fo ll ow ing day we re the g uided mi ss ile destroyer
    HM AS HOBART (Capta in 1.R. Stapleton) and fl eet oi ler HM AS
    SUCCESS (Captain 1.S. O· Hara).
       Al so participating is the submarine HM AS OVENS (LCDR S.M.
    O · Hearn ).
       The Australian units are manned by more than 1,000 perso nnel.
       They wi ll j oin more than 50 other warships and auxiliaries and
    units from the US Coast Guard, Air Fo rce, Army and Marine Corps.
       RIM PAC 94 is the 14th in the series of biennial exercises which
    began in 1971.
       Australian sailors and ainnen have parti cipated in all of them.
       RIM PAC (RIM of the PACIFIC) is designed to enhance tactical
    capabilities of the ships and perso nnel in major aspects of maritime

       For the RAN, RIMPAC provides a rea l opportunity to sec ure skills                         to farewell him.

    Gu lf War.
       It is a unique opportunity for Austral ian ships and aircraft to con-
    duct tactical live weapons firings and integrate with a large mu ltina-
    tional force.
       It is al so an econom ica l and efficient use of the fuel all owance
    with increased training benefit achi eved.
                         BATTLE GROUPS
      In each RlMPAC, two separate baule groups conduct independe nt
   training and operational exercises.
      They then move into large-scale free play actions in a variety of
   environments, spanning all warfare discipl ines.
      RJMPA C tests and develops:
      • Com mand and control at all leve ls, including demanding hi gh-
   level command experience fo r RAN officers.
      • Commun ications over a vast area.
      • Operational performance in a testing tactical environment.
      • Interoperability.
      • Equipment performance and employment.
      • Tact ics and commanders' tactical abili ty.
      • Rules of engagement interplay.
      • New combined procedures.
