Definitional Ceremony and Outsider Witnesses in
Narrative Therapy with Ninetta Tavano MSW, RSW.
                                    March 12, 2010 1:00 - 5:00
                                 9412 – 91 Street Edmonton, AB.

Engagement in definitional ceremony and outsider witness practices is a central aspect of
narrative therapy. Based on the work of cultural anthropologist Barbara Meyerhoff, this tradition of
acknowledgement supports people in stepping in more preferred stories. Here, the therapist
guides the structuring of separate, distinct conversational forums which provides a context for rich
story development.

In this workshop, Michael White’s map for definitional ceremonies will be detailed. We will look at
the preparation of outsider witnesses, categories of inquiry and structuring definitional
ceremonies. Various illustrations of the relevance of this concept to therapeutic practice will be
provided through stories and practice exercises.

Ninetta Tavano has worked as a clinical social worker for over 25 years in Western Canada.
She is the director of The Narrative Project which promotes the development of narrative practice
for professionals. Ninetta has presented on narrative therapy nationally and internationally.
