Assessment for Reading Instruction – SBRR
This course is designed to assist teachers in becoming proficient consumers and users of classroom-based assessments and assessment data.
Instruction will focus on building knowledge of the purposes of assessment, types of assessment tools, how to administer and use several valid,
reliable, well-researched formal and informal assessments of reading and related skills, how to effectively interpret the results of assessments, and
how to communicate assessment results in a variety of contexts. Participants will show that they can use assessment data to guide instructional
decisions.
Inquiry Group I - Conscious Classroom Management Online Book Study
This online book study course is for teachers and for administrators who wish to coach their teachers to more effective ways of facilitating
learning. Participants will become familiar with the concepts and strategies that effective classroom managers use. Rick Smith’s book, Conscious
Classroom Management- Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching, is written in an easy, conversational manner not only telling us what to
implement tomorrow, but also reminds us of the how and why of the specific strategies. The strategies will help teachers and their students
achieve more in an environment consciously constructed to feel safe and foster learning. Books will be provided for your use during the course.
Co-Teaching: 2 Teach Will Reach
Participants will explore models and strategies for effective co-teaching at the secondary level. Participants will learn effective communication
and collaboration techniques, evaluate planning tools, and implement differentiation strategies to meet the needs of every learner in a co-taught
setting. Co-teaching pairs are encouraged to apply but not required in order to participate. To earn 3 credits, participants will create co teaching
lesson plans, including accommodated assignments, implement lessons, and reflect on their effectiveness through participation in an online
community (this equals 15 hours of work outside of the in-seat time to the course to earn the third credit).
Differentiating Instruction in the Number Strand to Meet Student Needs
Participants will be exposed to the importance of recognizing prime numbers as the building block upon which the number theory is based. The
importance of knowledge and consistent application of the rules of divisibility will be discussed, including the rules of 7 and 11. Participants will
also be introduced to different strategies that facilitate the use of mental math in order to solve problems in an efficient manner. In addition, the
importance of learning and using appropriately accurate and precise language and vocabulary terms in math classes. This course is designed for
middle grade (3-8) math teachers.

Education That is Multicultural: Culturally Responsive Teaching
This course will provide participants with an opportunity to explore their cultural experiences and identify how it impacts student achievement.
Through active participation, in the class, students will develop sensitivity to racial and cultural bias in instructional materials, texts, and in
teaching/learning strategies. Participants will gain a better understanding of the role of Education That Is Multicultural in accelerating student
achievement, current educational mandates and national trends.
Family Involvement and Beyond
This course is an in depth study of the book “Beyond the Bake Sale” by Karen Mapp and Anne T. Henderson. In addition, students will examine
individual school data, current Family Involvement status and increase knowledge of outreach strategies. Each participant will develop an action
plan for his/her school.
Geometry With Reasoning
This course is designed to help teachers learn and apply strategies to effectively teach the Core Learning Goals course, Geometry with Reasoning.
Any Geometry teachers who are new to teaching Geometry and have not taken this course are strongly encouraged to enroll.
Inclusion: Making It Happen Through Creation, Implementation & Facilitation
This course will cover a variety of inclusive topics. Participants will develop a background of inclusion based on legislature and history of
inclusion movement. Participants will have the opportunity to work with curriculum modifications and adaptations pertaining to students with a
wide range of disabilities. Behavior intervention strategies as well as peer support and facilitating social interactions will be reviewed.
Communication, collaboration, and a variety of teaching techniques to enhance the inclusion process will be discussed.

Integrating Technologies into Instruction
Teachers will have the opportunity to learn new methods of integrating existing technologies into instruction with differentiated instruction.
Methods of Teaching Reading in the Content Areas, Part I
Participants will analyze MSDE Design Principles for secondary content area reading and explore the interactive nature of the reading process. A
variety of strategies will be introduced in the areas of motivation and text structure. Participants will develop an understanding of vocabulary and
concept development in content area reading. Strategic instruction will be designed using appropriate reading materials to achieve content area
goals. A variety of assessment methods for content area literacy will be used to plan instruction and communicate with students, parents and
colleagues.

Online Teaching and Facilitating
This course prepares participants to teach K-12 and professional development online courses. It provides a foundation in the methods, skills,
processes, and best practices for teaching and facilitating already developed, fully online courses. It is not intended for teachers who simply wish
to use a learning management system like Moodle in support of a face-to-face course, nor does it cover the design of online courses.
The course is taught completely online, with two face-to-face sessions for orientation and wrap-up. There will also be two synchronous chat
sessions, date and time TBD.
Participants should have a moderate level of proficiency with word processing, email, and web-based interaction, have access to a high-speed
Internet connection (cable, DSL, etc.) and be prepared to be online for a total of 6-7 hours, spread over 4-5 days, every week.
Processes and Acquisition of Reading-SBRR
This course is designed to assist teachers in understanding the reading acquisition process through observation and analysis of reading and written
language development, and the study of current issues in reading research. It is organized around current, accepted, research-based theoretical
models that account for individual differences in reading. Introduction to language structures including spoken syllables, phonemes, graphemes,
and morphemes is included in this course. Participants will apply knowledge of the core areas of language to reading acquisition in terms of first
and second language acquisition, typical development and exceptionalities. Participants will be introduced to current scientific research.
Spanish for Educators – Part II
Students in this course will develop communicative skills in Spanish within a school setting. The focus of the course will be functional, school-
based communication in Spanish to help our staff with the growing number of Spanish-speaking parents and students in Frederick County Public
Schools. The course will teach basic interpersonal communication skills in Spanish. This will be an active listening and speaking course; some
skill development in reading and writing will be included as well. Various cultures within Spanish-speaking countries will be explored. Pre-
requisite: Spanish for Educators (Part I)
Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Meeting Their Special Needs in the General Education Classroom (PK-12)
This course is designed to present participants with techniques and strategies that will enable them to effectively communicate with and teach
students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and establish a classroom climate that fosters participation, independence, appropriate behavior,
communication and social engagement. Participants will learn a repertoire of intervention techniques to use with students with diverse learning
needs.

objectives in that strand. Manipulatives included in the course are Algebra titles, Geoboards, Geometer’s Sketchpad®, APPS on the graphing
calculator, and Foldables™
Who Says Learning Can’t Be Fun? Creating the Engaging and Rigorous Classroom
This course experience is designed to assist teachers in creating the child-centered classroom through research-based best practices that teach with
the brain in mind. Teachers will be actively engaged in learning a variety of hands-on classroom structures and techniques designed to engage
students in learning (beyond the “what”). Teachers will also develop an understanding of how to set high expectations that provide rigor for all
students.
