Letter from the President
Well, another year has come and gone. Hard to believe it’s 2009! I hope that everyone had a good and
prosperous year with a bright future. In this unstable economy, we should all feel blessed for the work that
we have. In speaking with other glass companies and vendors in other states, we seem to have it very good in
Texas. Let’s hope that 2009 brings us more prosperity!
The TGA/NTD Christmas party was another huge success. I want to thank Jim Hester and his committee for
giving us another great time. The location, food and entertainment were top notch! It also appeared as
though Santa’s Helpers took in quite a haul. And TGA/NTD made a nice donation to top it off. Thanks also to
Troy Dungan for being a part of our organization again this year. I had a chance to speak with Troy and he is a
super guy. Hopefully he will be able to make next year’s party too. Congratulations to all of the award
winners and to all of the raffle winners. A special congratulation goes to Cliff Helterbran, the recipient of the
Johnny Lamb Award. Cliff has been an outstanding member of our organization and the award was certainly
I would like to extend my thanks to all of the remaining board members and to the new board Members, in
advance, for all of the help they are going to give me this year. I am little nervous about taking over the
presidential duties from Kirk, but I know with your help, it will be a successful year. I would also like to say
thank you to Kirk for doing a great job in 2008 and giving me big shoes to fill.
My door is always open. Please do not hesitate to call or email me with any suggestions or comments. We
are all in this together!
Have a great year!

TGA/NTD 2008 Christmas Party Benefiting Santa’s Helpers
It was another fantastic Christmas Party!! Over 85 people enjoyed themselves the
entire evening. The food turned out awesome and this year we enjoyed our good
friend Mike Efeney of Armstrong Ceilings spinning some great music for us.
Thanks to all of you that brought so many toys and bought tons of raffle tickets.
We filled up eighteen HUGE lawn and garden bags of great toys. Many kids of all
ages will wake up to an exciting Christmas because of you! That alone made my
evening a complete success!
I want to extend a SPECIAL THANK YOU to the sponsors of the evening:
Corporate Sponsorships of $1000
Door Control and Quality Powder Coating.
Alecom Metal Works, Astro Sheet Metal, Mammen Glass, Vitro, & Universal
Country Glass & Mirror, Hilti, Vision Enclosure Walls and Western Extrusions.
I would also like to shout out a Giant Thank You to Rick at B & B Glass, Kirk at Arch
Aluminum and Glass, Horton Automatics, AGC Flat Glass, HKS Architects and
Universal Glass for their contributions to the raffle give-a-ways and Santa’s
This event was certainly a challenge for me, but I enjoyed every minute of it and I
hope to get the chance to help on next year’s party as well. We were so glad that
Troy Dungan himself made it again and he made sure to let us know he will be
there again next year. And one last BIG GIANT thank you to Michelle Ordonez,
Monica Lamb and Elaine Tschirgi for helping with all the details, and there were a
LOT of details I needed help with.
Cliff Helterbran Receives Award
The recipient of The 2008 Johnny Lamb Award
is Cliff Helterbran of Helterbran Associates.

Adhesive and sealant procedures and products
Proper surface preparation is one of the most crucial factors that determine the ultimate
success of a sealant. All the technical data that manufacturers publish is based on proper
At the outset, it is important to note that because individual job conditions can vary greatly,
you should perform a test on the actual substrate to determine the degree of preparation
required. Some applications require primers while others do not. When in doubt, consult with
the manufacturer of the sealant.
Most sealant manufacturers recommend a two-rag wipe to properly clean a joint prior to
sealant application. This is a simple technique in which a clean, lint-free cloth is used initially
to wet and clean the surface, followed by a second, dry cloth to clean the surface. Always
apply the solvent to the rag. Do not dip the cleaning rag into the container of solvent because
this could contaminate the solvent. Use separate rags for each cleaning technique; do not use
rags that contain one solvent for a second purpose.
Apply the primer just before applying the sealant. Be sure the surface is clean, dry and free of
any contaminants. Primers, often called adhesion promoters, are not intended to replace any
recommended cleaning steps.
Always follow the sealant manufacturer’s recommendations regarding the proper application
of primers. In general, apply primers liberally with a natural bristle paintbrush on porous
surfaces. On non-porous surfaces, apply primers with a clean natural bristle brush or lint-free
cloth in a thin, continuous film.
Apply the primer only to the surface to be treated. Do not apply the primer outside of the area
to be sealed, especially on porous surfaces where it may darken the surface.
Be sure to check the effect the solvent in the primer may have on paint or plastic surfaces.
Some primers are flammable. Do not smoke or use primers near sparks or open flames.
Clean surface preparation
Different surfaces require differing cleaning procedures, as listed below. Note, the words
“clean and dry” are used in every case.
• Concrete and masonry. Surfaces must be dry and free of dust and release agents. Be sure
the surface is sound as well. Actual preparation may consist of brushing with a stiff bristle
brush or, in extreme cases, sandblasting. Note, this type of surface requires priming with a
sealer or primer. Do not use paint, as it will not penetrate the surface.
• Stone. Stone includes granite, marble and limestone. Like masonry surfaces, the stone
must be dry and dust-free. Testing is recommended to determine if a primer is needed and if
there are any potential problems with staining.
• Glass. Glass surfaces must be dry and free of dust, dirt, oil and any other contaminants.
Use solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone, MEK, or alcohol instead of soap and water to clean
the glass. Remember to check if the solvent is compatible with the materials it will contact.
• Paints. There are so many different types of paint formulations that testing is recommended.
In general, surfaces must be clean and dry. Use a clean rag moistened with naphtha or
isopropyl alcohol to clean the surface.
• Plastic. The term “plastic” includes a wide variety of products such as acrylics, polyesters,
polystyrenes, polyvinyl chlorides, polyvinyl fluorides and polycarbonates. Because there are
so many formulations, it is advisable to test for solvent and sealant compatibility. In all cases,
surfaces must be clean and dry. Use solvents such as alcohol or naphtha to clean plastics.
Note that certain plastics may contain components that bleed to the surface and affect
adhesion. Always make sure the solvent is compatible with the particular type of plastic being
• Metal. Metal surfaces must be oil- and dust-free, clean and dry. The most common finish
you are likely to encounter is anodized aluminum. This type of finish should be cleaned with
MEK. Stainless steel and galvanized steel can be cleaned with xylene.
• Wood. Unfinished wood will not provide a suitable atmosphere for sealant adhesion. Be
sure the wood is sealed with paint or another type of coating. Once sealed, the surface must
be clean, dry and dirt-free. Wood can be “sealed” with materials that can cause compatibility
concerns. Test for compatibility, even when wood frames are being used.
