Wikis
From Social Software Libraries in Libraries by Meredith G Farkas:
Wikis let a group of people with no knowledge of web design or HTML to build a
website collaboratively. A wiki is infinitely expandable and its pages are created
and connected to one another through hyperlinks. As a result, the structure of a
wiki is not predefined, but is developed by the linking behavior of is users. Wikis
are simple and lightweight solutions…. Essentially, a wiki is a perpetual work in
progress where anyone can add content, edit content, and create relationships
between content through hyperlinks (Farkas 68)
The Keene Wiki will be a resource created by students to provide useful information and
resources to other Keene students.
Your pod’s first job is to think of at least 4 wiki page topics that you could
research or could share expertise on, which would be of benefit to the college
community, and first year students in particular. What kind of information do you think
that there is a need for? The topics should be ones that would really be helpful to
students.
(It can be something that would benefit all students, future new students, or current
and future students of A Blog of
One’s Own.) The wiki page topic
should also be something that you
could take some pride in developing,
and which will allow you some outlet
for your creative energies.
I’ll hear the topics once you
generate a list, and give you
feedback on them.
Second job: Later on, for a future
homework I will ask each pod
member to go to the wiki page for
their pod at
http://keene.wikispot.org/ and
contribute to the description of your
pod. If you like, you can complete this work ahead of time.
Third task: For a later homework I will ask each pod member to help build the topic
page for your chosen wiki topic. Each member should sign in and add to the page. After
the page is built, we will think about ways to let students know about the page…(such
as posting flyers or email). I will ask your pod to design the flyer or email that will let
others know about the existence and benefits of your wiki topic page.
