INTRODUCTION
02
üCloud computing is a technology that uses the internet
and central remote servers to maintain data and applications
üCloud computing allows consumers and
businesses to use applications without
installation and access their personal files
at any computer with internet access.
üThis technology allows for much more
inefficient computing by centralizing
storage, memory, processing and
bandwidth.

CLOUD COMPUTING ARCHITECTURE
03
Cloud computing architectures can be either Private or Public
www.tksahu.blogspot.com
PRIVATE CLOUD
04
üA private cloud is hosted with an enterprise, behind its firewall, and intended only to
be used by that enterprise
üThe enterprise invests in and manages its own cloud infrastructure but gains benefits
From pooling a smaller number of centrally maintained high performance computing

PUBLIC CLOUD COMPUTING
05
A public cloud is hosted on the internet and designed to be used by any user with
an internet connection to provide a similar range of capabilities and services

CLOUD SERVICE MODELS
06
These services are broadly divided into three categories
üSoftware as a Service(SaaS)
ü Storage as a Service(IaaS)
ü Platform as a Service(PaaS)
www.tksahu.blogspot.com
Software as a Service(SaaS)
07
ü Software as a Service provides network-based access to commercially available
software
üSaaS represents the potential for a lower-cost way for businesses to use software
EXAMPLES:
üSkype - Telephony and video conferencing using the Internet.
üFacebook - Social interaction site.
üGoogle Docs - word processing, spreadsheets,
presentations, file sharing. Free.
üZoho suite - Email, word processing, Saas
spreadsheets, presentations, Web browser
file sharing, databases, Computer with internet
Free for personal use

Storage as a Service(IaaS)
08
ü All processing and computation is performed on the user s computer but user
data are stored in the cloud
ü Files are downloaded from the cloud for viewing and editing and then uploaded
back to the cloud for storage
EXAMPLES:
üGmail
üAmazon simple storage service
www.tksahu.blogspot.com
Processing as a Service(PaaS)
09
ü More demanding computing tasks are uploaded to the cloud, processed in the
cloud and the results are returned to the user
üSimilar to the storage service, the processing service can be accessed from any
computer connected to the internet
EXAMPLES:
üAmazon Elastic Computer Cloud Service

MODELS OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION
11
üThe functonality and energy consumption of the transport and computing equipment
on which current cloud computing services typically operate
üEnergy consumption models of the transport network, data center, and computers
üThe models described are based on power consumption measurements
www.tksahu.blogspot.com
USER EQUIPMENT
13
A user may use a range of devices to access a cloud computing service, including
a mobile phone, desktop computer or a laptop computer

DATA CENTERS
13
A modern state of the art data center has three main components
üDATA STORAGE
üSERVERS
üLAN
Equipment Capacity Power
consumption
Storage HP 8100 EVA 640.8 Tb 4.9 kw
Content Server HP DL380 G5 800 Mb/s 225 w
Computation Server HP DL380 - 355 W
LAN Cisco 6509 320 Gb/s 3.8 kw
Gateway Router Juniper MX-960 660 Gb/s 5.1 kw

CORPORATE NETWORK
15
üThe corporate network comprises several Ethernet switches interconnected in a
Hierarchical configuration
üPer bit energy consumption of transmission and switching
www.tksahu.blogspot.com
FUTURE OF CLOUD COMPUTING
16
üThere have been continuous improvements in the energy efficient of equipment as
new generations of technology come on line
üThis has led to exponential improvements over time in the energy efficiency of servers,
Storage equipment as well as routers and switches.
üIt is reasonable to expect that future generations of transport and computing equipment
Will continue to achieve improvements in terms of energy efficiency.

CONCLUSION
17
Power consumption in transport represents a significant proportion of total power
consumption for cloud storage services at medium and usage rates
For typical networks used to deliver cloud services today, public cloud storage can
consume of the order of three to four times more power than private cloud storage
due to the increased energy consumption in transport
