REVIEW OF OUTLINES
2” (2 inch) top margins
Title should be:
o Centered
o Bold
o ALL CAPITALS
Set your tabs before you begin to type the body of your outline. This is
very important!!
Note: to change the “type” of tab for the Tab Alignment Button, simply click on it!
Click on the tab tool at the left end of the ruler bar until the correct tab stop symbol
appears:
left tab center tab right tab decimal tab Bar tab
The first tab that you set for an outline MUST be a decimal tab stop:
DECIMAL TAB STOP, Text aligns on the right, and flows to the left until the
decimal/period.
The subsequent tabs MUST be a left tab stop. These are set at every other
ruler mark after the decimal tab stop. It is best to set them all the way to
the 2 inch mark.
LEFT TAB STOP, Text aligns on the left, and flows to the right.
After the title there are 3 returns before the outline is started
The roman numerals MUST begin at the decimal tab stop for them to line
up properly. Tab once after the roman numeral and period are keyed
before you start the text. The text associated with the roman numerals
should be BOLDED BUT NOT CAPITALIZED.
Return twice after the roman numeral line.
The next line, “A.”, should be tabbed over to line up with the text from the
roman numeral line. Following along with that logic – each new outline
point should be tabbed over one additional tab stop.
All text between roman numerals is single spaced.
What to do before you print ANY job:
1. Make sure you have a footer containing: Date, Time, File name and your
name!!
2. Proof-read your work – should there be periods?, etc.
3. Spell Check!! – so easy to do and an easy way to lose points!!
4. Print Preview – are your margins right?, etc.
