Art Photography Year 11
Aperture, Shutter Speed, Exposure & Depth of Field
In-Class Task 1
Due: Wednesday 18th Feb
Summary
In groups of 3 borrow an SLR camera from the teacher. Each member of the
group must take their own version of the following 14 technique exercises.
Once complete you need to choose your best examples, put them into a word
document, label them appropriately - including the Aperture and Shutter
settings (you will need to take detailed notes as you shoot) - print and hand in.
Shutter Speed
Fast Shutter
1. Moving Water (you cannot take a camera into the toilets)
2. Someone Running
3. Someone Jumping
Slow Shutter
4. Moving Water
5. Someone Running
6. Someone Jumping
Aperture
Choose a subject with something/someone in the foreground (in front of your
subject) and something/someone in the background (behind your subject) and
take the following shots:
7. Wide Depth of Field
8. Medium Depth of Field
9. Shallow Depth of Field
With a Shallow Depth of Field move your Point of Focus to:
10. The subject at the front
11. The subject at the rear
Exposure (A Stop for a Stop)
Find a subject and set the camera at the lowest f-Stop number. Adjust your
shutter speed until you have a good exposure and take:
12. A shot at your current exposure
13. Change 3 f-stops higher in your aperture and 3 stops lower
in your shutter speed.
14. Again, change 3 f-stops higher in your aperture and 3 stops
lower in your shutter speed.
Reminder Notes
The faster the Shutter Speed the stiller the motion.
f-Stop = Aperture, Stop = Shutter Speed
Anything slower than 1/60th of a second will blur from camera shake
and you will need to rest the camera on a solid object or use a tripod.
Aperture controls Depth of Field – the lower the f-Stop number, the
shallower the Depth of Field (and vice versa).
By changing one f-Stop you double or halve the amount of light, by
changing one Stop you double or halve the amount of light. Remember
the rule “A Stop for a Stop”.
If you are having trouble seeing your Depth of Field changing, try a
prime lens.
Make sure to create a folder on your USB called Task 1 and make a backup
of your images.
