Hello Dear Readers,
I am Affiliate Getter and some of you might know me from Challenge: $50 a
Day Online | From Scratch
In past few years I have failed numerous times but it was not my failure, it was
a learning experience. I learned so many valuable lessons and thing that today I
am in a position to make a living off of my online business.
I have been asked by so many people at MMD about the keyword research. At
first I thought of creating a post but then I thought of making an ebook which
would be easier to store in the computer memory and you won’t have to come
back to my site or thread at MMD.
If at any point of time you feel like asking a question, please do so. I would be
happy to help (If I could.

Let’s take an example of one of the sites from the campaign itself:
http://www.moneymakerdiscussion.com/forum/mmd-personal-journals/49260-
challenge-make-50-day-online-scratch.html
I wanted to create a site on Hair Removal. I knew Hair removal is a very broad
term and competition in this niche would be very high. I don’t want to keep
struggling to make it to top 10 for 7-8 month when I can create a few sites
focusing on less competitive sites which would rank pretty well in less time.
Since Hair Removal is a very basic, vast and huge keyword, I narrowed down
the keyword to Female Hair Removal and Male Hair Removal. Now these
two terms are less competitive than Hair Removal but still not good to make site
on. I had to make a selection and go with one of these two keywords so I chose
Male Hair Removal.
Why did I choose Male Hair Removal instead of Female Hair Removal?
Pure Instincts! I just thought that competition in Female Hair Removal must be
higher than Male Hair Removal but you can always go with Female Hair
Removal and then churn out some good keywords.
I decided to put the selected keyword in the Google Keyword Tool. This is a
free tool (if you don’t know)
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Now there are 7 things in Google Keyword tool that you should take care of
before finalizing any keyword.
1. Country/Region
2. Exact match
3. Competition
4. Global monthly Searches
5. Local monthly searches
6. Approximate cpc
7. Sorted by Relevance
Copyrights @ Affiliate Getter
Affiliate Getter’s Money Making Boat
A. Country: By default, this will be set to United States and if not then you
must change it to United States. Why United States? The market of
United States is beneficial for internet marketing. Apart from United
States, You can also select United Kingdom or any other that you feel is
best for your site.
B. Exact Match: When you enter a keyword and hit search you will see on
the left side of the page that there are three options. Broad, Exact and
Phrases. By default it is set to Broad but we have to go with Exact. Why
Exact? It gives you an exact figure as to how many people are searching
for your keyword.
C. Competition: This column will be present right next to the keywords
column by default. If it is not there, just select it from the Columns tab
located right above the keywords table. What does this column do? You
will see some bars against the keywords. They depict the competition for
the keywords. A full green bar shows that competition is very high, a
complete white bar shows that there is very less or zero competition. You
get an idea about the competition from this column. However, don’t make
any final assumptions from here. This may help you but it can never be
the deciding factor.
D. Global monthly searches: Global monthly searches show the total
number of searches made from around the globe for any particular
keyword. Thing to notice: We had selected United States in the Country
option. The stats shown in Global Monthly Searches are not from United
States alone but it depicts stats from all the countries all together. So for
this reason, this column is not very important for us.
E. Local Monthly Searches: Now this is the main column which will show
us the number of searches for any particular keyword from the country
we selected in Country section. This will only show stats from that very
country. This is an important tool for us and we will always refer to the
results shown here.
F. Approximate CPC: Many of the new marketers tend to leave this
column as they are not able to see its worth. This column shows an
average amount which is spent on its promotion via Ads. How does this
Copyrights @ Affiliate Getter
Affiliate Getter’s Money Making Boat
help us? When we are analyzing our keyword and we see that the
Approximate CPC column shows $0 or anything less than $1, then it’s
not worth going for. Well, it MIGHT be worth going for but if you are
choosing anything above $1, chances of getting better revenue increases.
There is a site of mine which just have $0.23 but it does give me around
$1 DAILY. So it all depends on the niche, type of ads that are showing up
and the traffic you are receiving. In order to make sure of things, you
must go for keywords that have Approximate CPC above $1.
G. Sorted by Relevance: There is a tab above the keywords table which
says Sorted by ..... It is a good tool to adjust the type of result you want
to get. Just play with it and you would easily understand it.
I had chosen Male Hair Removal niche and now I am looking for a keyword in
this niche which would have less competition, good Approximate CPC and
good number of searches. When I had put this keyword in the Google keyword
tool I got a list of 500 keywords. Now going through all these keywords was
tough and time consuming. I looked at the Competition bar and I tried to avoid
any bar which is FULL GREEN. So what were the initial steps?
Copyrights @ Affiliate Getter
Affiliate Getter’s Money Making Boat
I started picking keywords (avoiding keywords that have high competition and
high number of searches. The first keyword in the list was my entered keyword
itself. Male Hair Removal had High Competition (first flag, see the image),
Local Monthly Searches were 720 (It’s a decent number, trust me) and
Approximate CPC is $4.90 (this is a great amount!
So according to the above figures, if I chose Male Hair Removal as my primary
keyword and rank my site in top 10 I would receive some portion of 720 as
traffic.
Why some portion?
If my site is amongst top 10 then there would be 9 other sites which would
receive search engine traffic. So we all get some portion of 720.

Go to Google.com and put your keyword in the search bar. Hit enter and see if
there are any ads showing up for your keyword? If there are no ads then there
are not much buyers and advertisers for that product/keyword. For this
keyword, we see more than 4 ads which is a good sign. And if the ads which are
showing up have exact keyword in their title then it’s even better. For our
chosen keyword there is good number of ads and there is one Ad which has the
exact title.
Copyrights @ Affiliate Getter
Affiliate Getter’s Money Making Boat
Everything seems to be fine so far except the Competition. Let’s add one more
pointer to our analysis. Go to Google.com and put your keyword in the search
bar with Allintitle:
I entered allintitle:male hair removal in the search bar. It said about 33,200
results for the entered information. When we enter the keyword in the search
bar alone (without allintitle: ) we would get number of sites which contains this
keyword for AT LEAST once in their website. If you ever tried to judge the
level of competition by doing this you would end up wasting your time. The
allintitle: method is also not the deciding pointer but it surely helps in making
the mind.
Without allintitle: it said: 6,270,000 results
With allintitle: it said: 33,200 results
So what happens when we do allintitle:keyword?
The allintitle: pointer helps in returning the number of websites which contains
the keyword in their Title. For most of the site done with little SEO point of
view, they will use the permalink option for their pages. That is, whatever is
written in your title, it will appear in your URL as well. I always prefer to go for
Copyrights @ Affiliate Getter
Affiliate Getter’s Money Making Boat
those keywords which have less than 10,000 competing sites when tried with
allintitle. For Male Hair Removal keyword it was showing 33,200 results
(Second Flag.
So far, there are two flags. Can you relate the two flags with each other? First
flag is with the Competition bar in Google and second bar is with the allintitle
pointer. Both of these pointers are being used by us as a filter for checking
competition. It is now visible that the competition is bit high for this keyword
and now I can easily, without any doubt, leave this keyword on the basis of
analysis I just did.
NOTE: Not all the marketers use this combination for selecting a nice keyword.
This is not a thumb rule.
In my thread, I had said that you real competition is the top 10 or top 20 ranking
sites. What we did above was just the basic analysis. If everything goes well
with the above analysis we would proceed further with in-depth analysis. In our
example, Male Hair Removal has already got 2 flags in competition which is
enough for me to leave the keyword. But since I am writing this text to help you
with making the right decision while choosing a keyword, I would go with in-
depth analysis for the same keyword.
Copyrights @ Affiliate Getter
Affiliate Getter’s Money Making Boat
We will now analyze the top 10 websites for this keyword and see how the
competition in top 10 is.
So what are we looking for when doing in-depth analysis?
1. PR of the site should not be more than 3
2. Backlinks to Page: If the backlinks are between 100 and 700 then it’s a
go-go keyword.
3. Backlinks to domain: If majority of sites have huge number of backlinks
to the domain but the main ranking page has very small number of
backlinks then we can go for the keyword. (NOTE: we are talking about
the domain name and not the page that is ranking. For example the first
site in the example below has 4807 backlinks to the ranking page but the
main domain has 26,954,160 backlinks. On the basis of Backlinks to
Domain we can easily deduce that this site is not doable. However, if we
combine this with the backlink to page result, we get a better picture and
now we know that it is not at all doable.
If the number of backlinks to the domain name is huge and number of
backlinks to the main ranking page is more than 20 but less than 60-70
then it is doable. This situation occurs mostly with Amazon, nextag and
target sites. Any product based site will return you stats where Backlink
to Domain is very huge but Backlink to Page is very small. They are
very doable. We will discuss more about it later.
4. Number of indexed pages: It is always better to have sites with less
number of pages indexed. But if you find sites with huge number of pages
indexed, don’t worry much about it. Just concentrate on other factors.
5. Keyword appearance in Title, URL, description and Head: If the
pages ranking in top 10 don’t have any or all of these, you are at an
advantage.
Let’s start with analyzing the sites in top 10 for our keyword Male Hair
Removal.
First site: http://www.askmen.com/fashion/trends_100/103_fashion_men.htm

Affiliate Getter’s Money Making Boat
Seems do-able but its domain is the exact match keyword. It will take some
time in beating this site.
Why is it doable? Backlinks to page is just 218, Backlink to domain is also less.
Even though it has keyword appearing in Title, URL, Description and Head, we
can outrank this site on the basis of backlinks. Plus, the PR of the page is zero.
Had it been 4, 5 or more, it would become difficult to outrank the site.
Fifth Site:
http://hairremoval.about.com/od/menshairremoval/Mens_Hair_Removal.h
tm
PR 4
Backlink to Page: 460
Backlink to Domain: 71,312
Number of indexed pages: 2,280
Keyword appearance in Title, URL, Description and Head: YES
Tough To Beat
Backlink to page are less but to domain is more. I wouldn’t worry if the
backlink to page are less than 100 but when so many backlinks are pointing to
domain then the link juice will spread to almost all the pages which will support
the main ranking page which 460 links. Apart from this, Keyword appearance is
all over.
Sixth Site: http://www.pubichairremovalguide.com/

Keyword appearance in Title, URL, Description and Head: YES
Doable. Can easily outrank this site.
Look at the number of backlink to page!! Just 108. And backlink to domain
are 813 which is less than majority of sites in top 10. PR of the page is zero.
Only 6 pages are indexed.
Ninth Site: http://www.naircare.com/men/landing.aspx

Backlink to Domain: 10,006

Tenth site: http://www.break.com/usercontent/2008/3/Not-Gay-Male-

Backlink to domain: 18,135,268
Number of indexed pages: 3,200,000
Keyword appearance in Title, URL, Description and Head: YES
Will take some time and effort to outrank
So is it worth going for this keyword?
NO! There are only two pages in the top 10 which can be outranked easily and
for the rest of the pages, we will need to work hard, harder. If there had been at
least 5 sites which could be outranked easily, we should go for the keyword. For
the keyword Male Hair Removal we have only 3 sites which can be outranked
very easily.
After not-so-long research, I landed up at Male Pubic Hair Removal. Now this
is longer than Male Hair Removal. It is more specific than Male Hair Removal.

Let’s compare the stats of Male Pubic Hair Removal with Male Hair Removal
Male Hair Removal Male Pubic Hair

Which is better? This one
What are SEObook.com search stats?
I use this tool in conjunction with Google Keywords tool. Here is the link to
SEObook.com tool http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/
There has been a lot of discussion going on regarding the stats of both of these
tools. Many professionals in the internet marketing debate that Google Keyword
tool results are not up-to-date. However, rumour has it hat SEObook.com has
more up-to-date data.
I have chosen Male Pubic Hair Removal Based on the competition analysis and
the search figures from SEOBook.com. There is a site of mine based on hhhhh
Copyrights @ Affiliate Getter
Affiliate Getter’s Money Making Boat
keyword (I won’t reveal it. Google Keyword says that hhhhh has medium
competition, 420 Local monthly searches and $0.23 CPC. When I check hhhhh
in SEOBook.com it says 105 DAILY SEARCHES. If I believe SEOBook.com
then the number of monthly searches should be more than 3,000 but Google
says it is 420. In order to cross check and find out which tool tells the best
visitor figure, I checked my Google analytics report. Hhhhh based site is
receives about 30 visitors daily which equals to around 600 visitors in a month.
The search engine traffic that I receive is a portion of all the search engine
traffic for hhhhh keyword. It has to be a portion of all the Search Engine traffic
because there are 9 other sites in top 10 and they are receiving traffic too.
I hope this explains why I take SEObook.com stats into consideration.
Go to SEOBook.com and install their tool bar in your browser. It is worth
installing, trust me!
Similarly, take cobra walkie talkies for example. The stats of this keyword are:
1. Google keyword tool exact local monthly searches: 880
2. SEOBook.com daily searches: 127
3. Allintitle: 10,000
4. Approximate CPC $1.35
5. Only one site in top 10 with PR more than 4
6. Only two sites with big backlink to page
7. Only 4 sites with keywords appearing in Title, Desc., URL and Head
OR take philips universal remote codes for example. This keyword has very
huge search volume but very less competition. I have got loads of such
keywords with me just because I have access to some of the greatest and best
tools like Google keyword tools, SEOBook.com and Market Samurai.
Choice of keyword depends on you. All you need to do is just drill down to the
best ones available.
Copyrights @ Affiliate Getter
Affiliate Getter’s Money Making Boat
I will just repeat what we need to know before we could conduct a good
keyword research sessions.
1. Approximate CPC of more than $1
2. More than 3-4 Ads when you put keyword in the search engine
3. Long tail keywords are better than short tail keywords
4. Avoid High Competition keywords
5. Always go for EXACT match in Google Keyword Tool
6. Stick to Local Monthly Searches stats (Don’t worry much, just cross
check with SEOBook.com tool)
7. SEOBook.com Search stats should be more than 70-80
8. Allintitle:keyword should be less than 10,000
While checking for top 10 sites stats make sure that:
1. At least 5 sites are less than PR 3
2. At Least 5 sites should have less than 100 Backlink to page
3. At least 5 sites should not contain keyword in their Title, Head,
Description and URL
There is one more step which I have not mentioned above for analyzing the
SEO competition. It is the strength and anchor text of the backlinks of page.
Now this goes even more in-depth and to be able to get even better results, you
must do this step.
Is there any way that you could check the anchor text of the backlinks to page?
Yes, there are some tools available in the market like Market Samurai. With
Market Samurai, you get to check the number of backlinks, PR of backlinks
and Anchor text of backlinks (very important.
Copyrights @ Affiliate Getter
Affiliate Getter’s Money Making Boat
So how does checking this benefit us?
Let’s say, the top page has got 20,000 backlinks to page. At first place, we
would get a hint that it is not at all doable and there is a very valid reason to
think this way. Sometimes, there is a mixture of different keywords used for
backlinking to page. You don’t know what anchor text/keywords have been
used to backlink to page. Chances are that out of 20,000 backlinks, 10,000
backlinks can be of different keyword/anchor text.
For example, examplesite.com has 20,000 links and this site is based on dog
training. Till the time we don’t do an in-depth analysis of the site’s backlink, we
won’t know what type of backlinks they are. We just know the number as yet.
Using Market Samurai, we get to see the PR of ALL THE BACKLINKS TO
PAGE. Yes, that’s the beauty of this software. If we are able to get an idea
about the strength of backlinks then our job becomes easier. A few PR 5 links
are better than 100s of PR0 zero. What if you competitor site has 5000 PR 5
backlinks or all 20,000 PR 0 links? Are you getting what I am trying to say?
When you know about the backlinks you can work a little better than your
competition. Similarly, if you know about the anchor text you will beat your
competition easily.
Just try out Market Samurai for a few days and try to get a hang of it. Once
you are comfortable with it, I am sure you wouldn’t regret your decision!
With the help of Market Samurai, you can analyze the competition for your
keyword (Just like I did for Male Hair Removal keyword. You can also check
the strength of backlinks.
