MAKING LEARNING
IRRESISTIBLE
Headteacher: Mr. M. Cooke
January 2012 Newsletter
Happy New Year! Now that 2012 is here we will be turning our attention to the
Olympics and Paralympics taking place this summer. The school shares the Olympic
and Paralympic values of excellence, determination, friendship, inspiration, equality,
courage and respect. The theme of these values will be taught and reinforced
through the curriculum and in assemblies. We hope the children will be able to share
in this ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.
Road Safety
The housing project under development at the back of the school is causing
increased traffic congestion on Plymouth Grove West. Many staff and parents have
expressed concerns about the increasing danger to children caused by congestion
and I urge all parents and children to be extremely cautious and vigilant. We have
seen children crossing the road unaccompanied between parked cars which is
putting them in great danger. Children’s safety should be the number one priority.
Parking further away from school and using the traffic lights to cross will help keep
children safe. Please make sure self-interest and convenience isn’t put before child
safety and do not park on the yellow lines.
Punctuality
‘In the line at 10 to 9’
The start of the school day is very important and a time when the timetable for the
day and key messages are shared as well as guided reading. Please make sure your
child is in the line at 8.50am. Bringing a child to school 10 minutes late every day is
equal to over one week’s school absence. Part of education is to make sure children
develop the skills that are necessary for the workplace and developing a good habit
of being on time is extremely important.
Dinner Money
A reminder that the cost of dinner money is now £11 per week.
PE
PE is a compulsory part of the curriculum and it is necessary that all children should
take part. Children are able to wear leggings underneath the shorts and jumpers can
be worn on cold days. The PE kit is available from the school office for £9.
Pupil premium
The school now receives a ‘pupil premium’ which is additional funding for children in
the school who are eligible for free school meals. The school is using this funding in a
number of ways: reducing class sizes in Year 4, 5 and 6, additional teaching support
and sports coaches delivering the PE curriculum. The use of sports coaches is
providing additional time for teachers to work with individuals and groups of children.
If you feel you might be eligible for free school meals then please enquire at the
office.
Jewellery
Watches and stud earrings are the only items of jewellery which may be worn at
school and these must be removed during P.E. and swimming lessons. Teachers
are not to assist children with the removal of jewellery. If children cannot remove it
themselves it should be taken out at home on the days the child does PE. Any
articles removed will be locked in the teacher’s cupboard for the duration of the
lesson.
Reasons: Rings, necklaces, bracelets etc can turn a minor incident into a major
accident if caught on apparatus or entangled in another child’s clothing or hair. Even
stud earrings have the potential to cause severe tears to the wearer’s ears or injury
to others
Key Dates
Parents evening will be on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th February.
