The Ogunquit Playhouse is Truly Broadway at the Beach!
“America’s Foremost Summer Theatre.”
The Ogunquit Playhouse, America’s Foremost Summer Theatre, is one of the few professional
summer theatres of its kind still in existence. Here you will be entertained with Broadway shows,
stars, sets and costumes, all within a historical setting, conveniently located on Route 1.
The Ogunquit Playhouse was the dream of Broadway showman Walter Hartwig. Convinced that
Ogunquit¹s popularity, as an art colony and summer resort would make for a successful theater ex-
perience, he opened the Playhouse on July 1, 1933, in a renovated garage in the village square. The
success of the Playhouse was overwhelming and in just a few short years it outgrew its downtown
location. Hartwig bought the old Weare farm on the edge of town and in 1937 the Playhouse opened
in its current location with such stars as Ethel Barrymore and Maude Adams taking the stage.
In 1950 a young actor, John Lane, became General Manager and eventually took ownership of the
Playhouse, bringing in a business partner, Henry Weller to oversee the operations. Through their dedi-
cated direction, professional integrity and impeccable taste, the Playhouse thrived for over four decades.
Upon his retirement in 1994, John Lane founded the Ogunquit Playhouse Foundation. After a
successful fundraising campaign that insured the future of the theatre and grounds, ownership of the
Playhouse was transferred to the not-for-profit corporation in 1997. While John Lane passed away in
2000, the Ogunquit Playhouse continues to be a dynamic testimony of his commitment to live theater.
Now entering its 79th season, the Ogunquit Playhouse continues to bring Broadway quality the-
atre to Ogunquit. The Playhouse produces five musicals each season, bringing the biggest shows and
brightest talent together, with Broadway stars, sets and costumes, to delight audiences from May

Ogunquit’s Main Beach has been recognized by a variety of news and media as a remarkable loca-
tion. Ranked in the “Top 10 American Beaches” by Ladies’ Home Journal in 2010, the “Best Beach in
New England” by NECN in the same year, and “#1 Beach in New England” by Boston Magazine in
2007, Main Beach has certainly acquired some glowing reviews. But what makes this beach so special?
To begin with, the beach itself is impeccably maintained. The sand is soft and clean, and the sand
dunes behind the beach are preserved as a natural wildlife sanctuary. While taking in the scenery, you
might spot one of Ogunquit’s most famous residents: the endangered piping plover.
As a peninsula beach, guests can choose from an oceanside or riverside experience, each one offer-
ing unique views and opportunities. The oceanside is also home to both game and non-game-playing
zones. Active beachgoers have miles of sand to enjoy, while calmer beachgoers can relax, uninter-
rupted by volleyballs and boogie boards.
