It is never too early to start thinking about the musicians you would like to have for your
weddin g lit urgy. The parish weddin g fee already inc lude s the required ser vice s of the
Director of Music (organist) and C antor (vocalist). For more information on wedding
music ian s, including fees, ple ase see the section entitled “Optional Wedding Music ian s.”

The Director of Music ser ves as organist and principal m usician at all lit urgies at S acred
Heart Church. As principal music ian for the wedding, the Director of Music is entrusted
with the responsibility of determining the suitability of music al se lections within the
context of the Roman Catholic weddin g lit urgy, and must approve all music and musicians
chosen for the ceremony. The Director of Music also bears the essent ial responsib ility of
ensuring the proper performance and timing of the various musical portions of the
weddin g liturgy.

The Cantor serves as the le ader of song an d soloist at the wedding litur gy. O nly experienced
Sacred Heart cantors are permitted to serve in this capacity at weddings. This helps to avoid
disappointment to the couple and their fam ilies since it ensure s a de sir able continuity with
the church’s regular worship life , and protects the parish’s mission in terms of high
quality lit urgy. It also helps guarantee that the service will go smoothly because the
presider, cantor, organ ist and instrumentalists are accustomed to working with e ach other
as we ll as with the specific acoustic al demands of the liturgic al sp ace.

Instrumentalist s (trumpet, violin, oboe, flute, harp, trio, string quartet, etc.) may be used
upon approval of, and arran gement with, the Director of Music. D ue to musical and
lit urgical requirements, only experienced Sacred Heart instrume ntal ists may pl ay for weddings at
Sacred Heart Church. The Director of Music maintains a workin g relat ionship with the
Career Service s Department of The Juilliard School. Most, if not all, contracted musician s
are graduates or current students pur suing advanced degrees in performance. If couples
desire add itional music ians for their ceremony, the Director of Music will sec ure their
service s. On occasion, coup les wish to engage the services of Sacred Heart Schola, the
professional choral ensemble that sings at the 10:30 AM Mass on Sunday s. If th is is
desired, the Director of Music will secure t heir availab ility and discuss appropriate musical
selections with couples direct ly.
WEDDING MUSIC

Once you have an idea about the var ious musicians you would like for your ceremony, it is
time to start selecting the music. Before you begin, please remember that the Sacrament
of Marriage is a litur gic al celebrat ion. Therefore, one of the basic principle s that sh ould
govern your selection of music is whether the music is indeed litur gic al music. Se cular
music and popular songs, however meaningf ul they may be to you, do not have a place in the liturgy.
Such se lections may be performed at yo ur weddin g reception. For the wedding liturgy you
will want to be sure the emphasis is on sacred music , wh ich derives its context from
scriptural and liturgical source s, and by its very nature enhances your union within the
lit urgical rites being celebrated.

To best help you select music for your ceremony, please visit the followin g website:
                                    http://www.music atsacredheart.org
As you navigate this website, you will be able to listen to many standard (and some not-
so-standard) music al select ions that are appropriate for all aspects of your wed ding
lit urgy. Many coup les find it very helpful and are able to utilize it to its fullest. You will
be able to hear selections as often as you wish and share them with family and friends. In
the event that this reso urce does not answer all of your needs, the Director of M usic will
help you plan your ceremony.

Please note you are not responsible for selecting all of the music for the celebration. The
acclamations used durin g the lit urgy (ie. th e Sanctus, Memorial Acc lamat ion and Lamb of
God) are at the discretion of the Director of Music and will reflect the partic ular lit urgic al
season dur ing which your wedding take s place.

If you are having a N uptial Mass, you will need to select music for the followin g:
Processional, Re sponsorial Psalm, Communion, Meditation to the Virgin Mary ( o pt i on al )
and Recessional.

If you are having a ceremony, you will need to select music for the following:
Processional, Responsorial Psalm, Medit ation to the Virgin Mary (o pt io n al ) and Recessional.

Prior to the wedding ceremony, there is a Prelude consist ing of approximately 15 minutes
of instrumental music as gue sts arrive and are seated. The music played is at the
discretion of the Director of Music and encompasses a combination of pieces that mirror
the festive nature of the occasion as we ll as the quiet dign ity of prayerful reflection. The
prelude typically feature s organ music, however, if you are consider ing having add itional
instrumentalists for your ceremony, the organist and instrumentalists will select
appropriate repertoire that facilitates e veryone’s involvement.

If your we ddin g party is more than 4 pe ople walking in procession, you may wan t to
consider having 2 separate piece s for the processional. Consider select ing a p iece from
the above website’s “A” section for the wedding p arty and contrasting it with a se le ction
from the “B” section.
