Smart Used Cars- The Fortwo
Smart used cars like there Fortwo model is probably the smallest car anywhere on the road today. Actually
when you look at a Fortwo in person, you might think it's a go-kart on steroids and that it wouldn't be able to
handle a crash on the highway or harsh winters in different parts of North America. Mercedes-Benz took a
big gamble back in 2005 bringing such a small vehicle to a North American market that still loves its SUV's.
But with that said these vehicles became more popular in North America due to rising gas prices and so
more and more consumers were looking for something cheap on gas and less expensive purchase. My
research will be on the Smart Fortwo as a used vehicle to look it.
The Smart Fortwo's exterior is one of kind for both size and design. This vehicle is very short and narrow in
size and the panels that make up the body are made of dent resistant plastic. The Fortwo comes in two body
styles, the hatchback coupe (Pure/Passion models) and a convertible (Passion model only). The interior for
the ForTwo is a very simple layout. All gauges and the speedometer are easy to read and you have the basics
with heating/air, AM/FM radio etc.
The Fortwo might very well be one of the best vehicles for fuel consumption (for earlier models) that I have
ever seen. Early models used a diesel engine and this had a fuel rating of 4.6-litres, per 100km, for city
driving and 3.8-litres, per 100km, for highway driving. Newer models made the switch to a gas engine and
this had a fuel rating of 5.9-litres, per 100km, for city driving and 4.8-litres, per 100km, for highway driving.
Engine sizes vary from 2005 to 2009. In 2005 the Fortwo had a 3 cylinder, 0.8-litre turbo diesel engine and
this produced 40 horsepower. In 2008 they replaced the diesel engine to a gas power motor and this had a 3
cylinder, 1.0-litre engine and this produced 70 horsepower.
Let's look at some of the pros and cons of the Smart Fortwo as a used vehicle:
1- The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it a "good" rating for a frontal crash test done to it.
2- It has been given a positive review in some "Fortwo" web forums for winter driving in cold climates.
3- Other "Fortwo" web forums have had complaints with owners having problems with airbags.
