ROLLER DERBY? IN BALLARAT?

THE HISTORY OF BALLARAT ROLLER DERBY

Ballarat Roller Derby was formed in June 2008 by two Ballarat women, who came together after

discovering a mutual infatuation with Roller skating via Facebook. Keen to see Roller Derby happen

locally in Ballarat, & full of enthusiasm to get it happening in their town, they debuted shortly

thereafter in the undercover car park at the Library.

Soon they were lonely, and wished for more women to strap on their skates and get on board, so they

put up some posters around the town. Not long after, Miss Hellfire came to the party; and she was

swiftly followed by Apocalypse Nerd, Poke Her Face and Bezzombie.

In February 2009, they found themselves a suitable indoor venue, being as how Ballarat no longer has

an actual skating rink, and we were in run down Basketball Stadium heaven.

For the remainder of 2009, they worked tirelessly to get bout ready, and hosted their first bout entitled

'The Derbytante Brawl' on the 29th November. BRDL debuted 8 skaters in that first bout, with GRDL

generously helping us fill out the teams. The Gold Diggers reigned supreme on this glorious day, with

Miss Hellfire leading them to a sweet victory against The Libertines, in front of a crowd of

approximately 500.

BRDL has continued to reach goals in recruitment, success in advertising and media screen time and

both win and have our arses kicked at interstate and regional bouts (games).
