Celebrating Our Independence
A good book, a cozy atmosphere and a friendly face are all constants in the history of one of the
South’s oldest bookstores. Page & Palette in Fairhope, Ala., is celebrating its 40th anniversary
and thanking the loyal customers who have made this family owned business a downtown gem.

“We’re very grateful for the support we’ve sustained over the last 40 years,” says Owner
Karin Wilson. “It means so much to me and to my family that our store can find the
nourishment it needs to continue to compete with corporate-owned bookstores in our area.”

Page & Palette patrons seem to have a special place in their hearts for this “little bookstore
that could.” Some of the loyal customers are also on store shelves. Local authors Winston
Groom, Rick Bragg and Fannie Flagg are regular visitors who recognize the special experience
their local bookstore has to offer. In fact Bragg has said, “Page & Palette is one of the best
places on this earth to waste hours browsing for something to read, only to discover that,
when you’re done, you haven’t wasted a second.”

highlights to working here such as meeting authors and watching artists
doing paintings right outside our door, but the most fulfilling of all is
getting to know our great customers. We love our regulars who have
shared fun times, sad times and lots of laughs. We’re just like family or
best friends. We’ve had many who live away, but come by when in town
to share a latte, ice cream or just to say ‘hello’. Working with a loving and
supportive staff has brought moments in my life that will become lasting

“Real bookstores have more than books--they are filled with people who LOVE books. Page & Palette has shown that love for forty years now. It's a
place of reading treasures, good coffee, a gathering place for smart and fun people. Set in Alabama's fairest city, this is a bookstore where words and
ideas matter. It is in the vanguard of the independent booksellers which work so hard to keep the written word alive and healthy in our world.
               Happy birthday!”

“The Page & Palette has been the crown jewel of Fairhope for as long as I can remember. I have spent hundreds of hours lingering through its aisles
and perusing exotic and fashionable book titles dreaming of becoming a writer. I can truly say that imagining having my own book in their picture
window kept me inspired to realize that dream. Thanks Page & Palette for being here for me and all of the other writers you have nurtured through
the years. Bravo on your 40 years in business!”

and knowledgeable staff always ready to help me find what I need. Located on the beautiful Mobile Bay, Fairhope Alabama is listed as one of the
most charming towns in America, and any trip to Fairhope would not be complete without a visit to Page and Palette. Located in the heart of
downtown, the bookstore is an old-fashioned, family run establishment that through years of hard work and excellent service has now become one
of the most successful bookstores in the country. Congratulations on 40 years and best wishes for 40 more!”

               Roy Hoffman
“It's said these days that 40's the new 30, but in terms of independent bookstores, I'd say that 40 is the new 100. How wonderful that such a
special, homey, and intellectually exhilarating family bookstore keeps on keeping on. Like Fairhope Pier which is more than just a place to fish,
you're a community crossroads, Page & Palette, and for that we lift a glass of champagne in your name.”

“Like most writers, I’ve been to lots of bookstores all over the country. The more of them I see, the more I appreciate everything Page and Palette
does for its authors and patrons. Aside from their book-loving staff and spot-on inventory, no bookstore I know of does a better job of bringing
writers and readers together. They have been my hometown bookstore since I was a child. Now, not only are they still a great place to buy books,
but a sort of clubhouse for writers and readers alike. And for a town like Fairhope, that makes it the hub of the city. Happy 40th!”

               Jennifer Paddick
“Easily the warmest, most quaint, most eventful bookstore in the South, if not the country. Happy Fortieth, Page & Palette!”

“Rare, as a writer, do I walk into a community that values books, children, adults and ideas as fully as Fairhope. A major reason for that is Page &

“Congratulations on the 40th Anniversary of Page and Palette, one of my absolute favorite bookstores. I will never cease to cherish the memory of
the coming-out party for my novel A Posturing of Fools. Unsurpassed proprietorship, patrons and books, the collecting point for one of the top
literary communities in America, and representing all the best aspects of what I believe a fine bookstore should be, Page and Palette book store in
Fairhope, Alabama, will always be at the top of my itinerary when I begin a tour with a new novel.”

               Judith Richards
“When I moved to Fairhope in 1977, Page & Palette owner Betty Joe Wolff was the first to welcome me and my husband, C. Terry Cline, Jr., as
another of Fairhope's writers. Back then Betty Joe's granddaughters, Karin and Kelly, were little girls, often in the store or on summer days out
front selling lemonade. Now Karin (Wilson) is running the shop, and her young daughters are known to her customers. Page & Palette is still a
family business after 40 years...and a bookstore that understands and supports its writers and readers. I love that. Happy 40th anniversary Page &
Palette! Best wishes into the next century.”

“For forty years Page and Palette has been a nurturing breast to suckling artists and authors. The attentive and friendly staff knows the
hard pinched look of an aspiring writer and they are quick to respond with the kind of attention a struggling wannabe needs in the early stages of a
career that has not yet blossomed.
Among their clients are authors and artists who are world-class talents. Fairhope is home to dozens of creative souls whose work was
displayed and promoted by Bob and Betty Joe Wolff, and now by Karin and Kiefer Wilson. Today, forty years after the doors opened at Page &
Palette, the grandchildren continue the task in this remarkable independent bookstore.
No author is unknown here. On a given day one might encounter Jimmy Buffett, W .E.B. Griffin, Winston Groom or Fannie Flagg,
browsing through the gift cards and books section. I ran into the actor Tommy Lee Jones here, when he was filing at the battleship U.S.S. Alabama.
A customer asked, ‘Don’t I know you?’ Tommy Lee Jones said, ‘No, I don’t think so.’ ‘Didn’t you go to school in Foley?’ she asked. ‘No, ma’am, I
didn’t.’ ‘Have you ever lived in Gulf Shores?’ ‘No ma’am, it wasn’t me.’
When Mr. Jones walked out, everybody said, ‘That was Tommy Lee Jones the actor!’ The lady said, ‘I think he went to school in Foley.’
There’s no great bookstore, and no finer family tradition than Page & Palette and the family that has made it the fabulous place it has become to
               readers and writers.
Congratulation on your Fortieth Anniversary, Page & Palette. Thanks for everything.”

While Page and Palette is a small business in a small town, it has a knack for getting a big response
from big names. The store has hosted countless book signings and sell-out events featuring stars
like Paula Deen, Nicolas Sparks, Sue Monk Kidd, Alexander McCall Smith and Carl Hiaasen.

From world-renowned authors to local patrons, Page and Palette owes much of its success to
the people it serves. That’s why each year the store gives back to the community through its
Page and Palette Foundation. The bookstore hosts numerous benefits every year and has
donated more than $140,000 dollars to local charities.

2008 is a big year for Page and Palette. In addition to the yearlong anniversary celebration, owner
Karin Wilson has assumed the role of president of the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance
(SIBA). Mobile, Alabama, will serve as host city for the SIBA Annual Trade Show scheduled for
September 26-28. The SIBA Trade Show is one of the largest literary events in the South, attracting
nearly 2,000 booksellers, publishers and authors.
