ART MASTERS:

WHAT’S COMING IN 2009-10?

THE ART MASTERS NEWSLETTER A PIE SPONSORED PROGRAM June 2009

M.C. ESCHER (1898-1972) The Dutch GRAPHIC ARTIST M.C. Escher was a genius of

imagination. His graphic art explodes with visual surprises. When first looking at an

Escher work, it appears natural, but upon closer examination, what appears to be

natural is really impossible. Much of Escher’s work is based on geometry, and he was a

serious student of math. His work is full of impossible perspectives that stretch our

minds and imaginations!

RENE MAGRITTE (1898-1967) The Belgian SURREALIST artist Rene Magritte was a

contemporary of M.C.Escher. While Escher delighted in disorienting our eyes, Magritte

delighted in disorienting our minds. His paintings are full objects placed mysteriously out-

of-context. Although his paintings are realistic, they go beyond reality, to surrealism. No

other artist has influenced modern advertising as greatly as Magritte.

JOHN JAMES AUDOBON (1785-1851) The French-American NATURALIST John James

Audubon trained to be a painter alongside the famous French Neo-Classicist Jacques-

Louis David. He coupled his skills as a painter with a passion for ornithology to create

the book Birds of America which features 435 highly detailed plates of birds he

observed and painstakingly classified in North America after years of careful research.

It is widely regarded today as not only a beautiful work of art but also as an important

scientific document.

WASSILY KANDINSKY (1866-1944) The Russian born EXPRESSIONIST Wassily

Kandinsky is considered the founder of abstract art. He believed that paintings

do not have to represent or copy the visible world. Instead of painting pictures of

things, he painted strong, brilliant abstract colors and shapes that are full of

feeling. A clear thinker who wrote about abstract art, Kandinsky held a degree in

law, and was a world-renowned professor of art. His passion for music is evident

in his work and writings. He once said that everything in the world “rings.” He used colors as a composer

uses notes to create music.

LOUISE NEVELSON (1899-1988) Ukrainian-American ASSEMBLAGE ARTIST Louise Nevelson

moved as a child to Maine with her family. She decided to become an artist at the age of nine,

but it wasn’t until she was forty years old that she had her first exhibition as an artist. Her

abstract sculpture, made of joined pieces of ready-made materials, such as packing crates, or

discarded wooden ornaments, earned her many important awards and honorary degrees.

Nevelson has been called “the most celebrated female sculpture in the history of American

modernism.” However, she called herself the “Architect of Shadows.”

MEXICAN MURALS Three Mexican artists, Diego Rivera, Jose Orozco, and David

Siqueiros, were born out of the Mexican Mural movement of the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Their work, although infused with politics, was painted publicly and grandly so that

everyone, not just wealthy benefactors, could see their art. They created a

monumental art that was inspired by their great love for Mexico, their belief in

creating art for the people, and their interest in the Pre-Columbian heritage of their

country.

Intelligences It’s How You Are Smart

Bringing a Multiple Intelligences perspective

to our research based Pre-K curriculum, we

teach the whole mind and the whole child

through developmentally appropriate, hands-

on activities.

Instruction is based on each child’s unique

Inside Learner Profile, enabling children to use their

strengths to build success in all areas of

learning throughout the school day.

1 After-School Enrichment Classes offer further

opportunity for young children to explore and

develop areas of interest from their Multiple

What Is Multiple Intelligence Theory?

Have you ever watched a group of children playing at the

park? You might observe several children constructing a

sand tower, while a child nearby is arranging rocks in a

pattern. Three children are at the top of the climber,

heartily singing their way through the latest Disney

movie. Under the bushes, two children are collecting bugs

and building homes for them out of leaves, while other

children are kicking a soccer ball around the grass. The Eight

If you were just arriving with your child, you could Multiple

probably predict which of these groups he’d be likely to

join. Why is that? You might be tempted to chalk it up to Intelligences

personality, but educational experts think there’s more to

it than that. Word Smart

(Linguistic intelligence)

Dr. Howard Gardner, of Harvard University, developed

the Multiple Intelligences theory in response to these

patterns of human behavior. While IQ tests only measure Number Smart

linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence, Dr. (Logical-mathematical

Gardner argued that the human brain is far more intelligence)

complex and human capabilities far more broad in scope.

Picture Smart

Through extensive research into brain imaging, human (Spatial and artistic

development, and psychology, Dr. Gardner identified intelligence)

eight distinct human intelligences. Dr. Gardner’s theory,

which has been embraced by education experts, is that

each person has their own combination of these eight Music Smart

intelligences, resulting in a unique Learner Profile. (Musical intelligence)

Self-Smart

How Do I Know What My Child’s (Intrapersonal intelligence)

Learner Profile Is?

Body Smart

Your child’s preschool teacher will visit with you in your (Bodily-kinesthetic physical

home prior to your child’s first day of school. The teacher intelligence)

will get to know your child, and also conduct a parent

interview to determine your child’s unique Learner People Smart

Profile. (Interpersonal intelligence)

The teacher and parent will then work together to

develop learning goals for your child that span all eight of

the intelligences. Nature Smart

(Naturalist intelligence)
