Trenton Churches Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service will be held at St. Mary Church next Sunday, November 20

increase our hunger for the day when there be greater Christian unity among the followers of Christ.

The New Translation of the Mass – The Preparation of the Gifts
This weekend the church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King. We recall that Christ offered the sacrifice of his life
on the cross to redeem all humanity and all creation. He continually makes this one offering of his life to the Father
through his body, the Church (the Body of Christ) who gathers to celebrate the Eucharist. By this sacrifice, Christ
becomes sovereign ruler over all that exists. He is Lord!
There are slight changes to the Preparation of the Gifts texts at Mass in the new translation. This part of the Mass
is often called the Offertory, although properly, the offering takes place in the Eucharistic Prayer. Gifts of bread and wine
are brought forward to the altar which will be transformed by Christ’s sacrificial offering into his body. The bread and
wine are “taken” by the priest and place on the altar with prayers that set them apart from ordinary food so that they may
become spiritual food.
The assembly is invited to see the sacrifice of the lives, the selfless love they show others, in the symbols of bread
and wine placed on the altar and to unite their sacrifice to the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus by the priest’s invitation to
“Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.” Instead of a
collective “our sacrifice” as in the former translation, the original Latin makes a distinction between priest and laity and so
must be translated as such. The people STAND at this point and say, “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for
the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy church.” One word is added to the familiar
response, “holy,” because it is in the Latin original and previously had not been translated in the equivalent translation we
are used to.
At St. Mary, some adaptations of the Roman Rite have been introduced by a previous pastor, with good intentions
of trying to stress that the assembly, not just the priest, is offering the gifts. Unfortunately, these adaptations are not in
union with the rest of the church and in line with the general instruction of the Mass in force at this time. Parishioners
have expressed confusion and asked why our parish practice is different from all the other Catholic Churches they
attended. Beginning this weekend, we will return to the practice outlined in the rubrics of the universal church. Please, DO
NOT STAND during the “offertory” (Preparation of the Gifts) when the procession enters the church and brings the
bread, wine, collection and gifts for the poor to the sanctuary. REMAIN SEATED, until Father indicates with a hand
gesture it is time to stand, which is after he says “May pray, brother and sisters….almighty Father.” THEN STAND.
AFTER ALL HAVE STOOD THAN SAY, “May the Lord accept….holy church.” Also, please use the prescribed text
and do not substitute the word “God” where the text uses masculine pronouns “His name, his church.”
