For the avid reader, clicking on amazon.com is like being locked in a bookstore for a whole night
when everyone else has gone home. For an author, even a self-published author, it's a marketing
bonanza, if you know how to take advantage of Amazon's many offerings. The latest is the
opportunity to publish your book digitally on Kindle, a wireless eBook reader that gives you access
to more than 350,000 books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs.
There are others on the market making a bid to "burn the bookstore down," in the words of
GIZMODO, the gadget blog. The most recent entry is Barnes & Noble's Nook. This isn't the
first time eBooks have tried to get a foothold in the publishing industry. In the past, they failed due
incompatible hardware and digital platforms, but this time it looks like they might make it.
That's good news for readers who can afford the price tag. The least expensive Kindle is $259,
and they go up from there. It's good news for authors, too, since we can digitize our books and sell
them in the Kindle store. Of course, I immediately attempted to upload my book--attempted and
failed. The complexities astounded me. Nothing worked. No format I could think of would convert
to the format Amazon had devised. No desperate e-mails to Amazon elicited responses I could
figure out. In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I never understand any instructions I
receive from Amazon. Never.
This story has a happy ending. With the help of the only person I know who seems to understand
the mysterious world of digital publishing, I uploaded my book to Kindle. Here's what to do.
* Whatever format your book is in, convert it to text only, and dump the content into a Microsoft
Word file.
* Forget about formatting, except for bold and italics. Forget about images and color, at least on
the original version of Kindle. Kindle books, so far, are really boring.
* Save your Word file as an HTML web page.
* Go to dtp.amazon.com/mn/signin.
* Open an account if you don't have one, or log in with your usual e-mail and password
* Enter your book title, and click the little + sign next to it.
* Add a description; select genre, categories, and keywords; and upload a cover image of your
book.
* Click the + sign next to Upload & Preview Book.
* Click the Browse button, find your newly converted HTML file, and Upload it.
* When you've done that and it finishes processing, click the Preview button. This is when you see
what it will look like on Kindle. Don't skip this step.
* To enter or change the price, click the + sign next to Enter Price. Don't price it too high. Most of
them seem to be about $9.99.
* Click Save Entries.
* Click Publish up toward the right to activate the new version and price.
That's all there is to it. Hard to believe, but true. Just follow the bullet points, and you, too can be a
Kindle author. Be sure to preview it online and on a real Kindle, if possible. You may have to keep
changing things and uploading and previewing before you get it right. But ultimately, it really is
worth the trouble.
