Internet viral marketing has put the power of mass media into the hands of individuals. The advent
of HOTMAIL a decade ago introduced the concept of tool usage = tool advertisement. That,
combined with the extreme shareability, led to the birth of Internet viral marketing.
Internet Viral Marketing can take many forms, including:
Internet Viral Marketing in RANTS:
Raging against the machine can capture the angst of an entire segment of the population. It can
give voice to people who feel taken advantage of... and position you as their hero.
RANTS are long, passionate monologues that have the author taking a very definite stand on one
side of an important issue. In an over the top fashion. They are intentionally amplified in favor of
one position - thus naturally galvanizing a lot of people behind you, and galvanizing a lot of people
AGAINST you!
If you're going to leverage a rant, be prepared for some feisty dialog, some new and very loyal
followers, and a fe individuals who will be kind of ticked off at you. Not for the faint-of-heart. :)
Internet Viral Marketing in HUMOR:
This is always a winner. If something is genuinely funny (to your audience), it will be shared ad
nauseum. In fact, it's always amusing when you have friend that's just gotten onto the Internet.
You know this has happened because they start forwarding all the jokes that were circulated years
ago. Humor gets shared.
In a business setting, it would be most useful if this humor was also enhanced with a business
value message. For relevance. Otherwise, you just become one of those funny ads that no one
remembers the source of.
Internet Viral Marketing in INTERACTIVITY:
Several companies have been using the interactivity of FLASH to create programs that people can
insert themselves into. JibJab.com are masters at combining interactivity with humor, to create
Internet Viral Marketing masterpieces. Burger King's SubservientChicken.com is another hilarious
example of using interactivity to drive home your brand value.
The best customized interactivity viral marketing techniques would output a photo or video that
people could then share via social networking sites. Increasing the viral reach of the campaign.
YearBook.com is an example of this. As is ElfYourself.com.
Because this typically requires some programming know-how, and a bit more of a budget than is
typical for a small business - the best way to get this customized interactivity via Flash is to
leverage existing tools. Rather than building your own.
Internet Viral Marketing in TOOLS:
Create useful tools for your target audience, and you will spread like wildfire.
They don't have to be fancy tools, either! You can simply provide instructions on how people can
USE particular resources that they already are aware of. Like Twitter, YouTube, eZineArticles, or
Squidoo.
The trick is that because you want this to spread virally, you apply what is called a REVERSE lead
capture page.
The difference between this and a traditional lead capture page?
You give away value BEFORE collecting leads. So rather than the lead form being a gate to any of
the valuable content, the lead form holds the key to additional value. After folks have had the free
sample.
You'll want to make it easy and obvious for people to share this free video.
Internet Viral Marketing in STORIES:
Before the advent of mass publishing, the entire histories of people was transmitted through
stories. Stories still have that carrying power today. Present a daunting antagonist, and make
yourself, or your target audience, the protagonist. Build up the tension in the story. Have
cliffhangers, and surprise endings. Your audience will not only come along for the ride, but bring
people along with them, too! Hence the virality.
This is especially powerful when you leverage current affairs, as they develop. (See "Be
Notorious", below.)
Here are the top 4 techniques to achieve viral infection via Internet Viral Marketing:
RIDE THE WAVE:
Rather than trying to create your own momentum from scratch, why not look to ride existing
waves?
By far the largest waves on the Internet today are Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
Many people have created businesses virtually overnight, by creating YouTube videos showing
folks how to leverage Facebook or Twitter for business.
YouTube videos are naturally easy to share - via email, embeds in blogs, embeds on Facebook
pages, sharing via ReTweets, and so on.
To that end, there is a very strong case for re-packaging your existing content and expertise, as
YouTube videos.
Tweets on Twitter are short and to-the-point. That brevity carries power. And the ability to include
a link to your landing page, or more information on the subject at hand, is deceptively potent. Get
re-tweeted, and you have arrived. Your virus has infected someone.
MAKE ME POPULAR:
Give me something that I can brag to colleagues about.
Make me look competent.
Current.
Fashionable.
Funny.
Wise.
Informed.
Whatever it is, raise my profile in the eyes of my peers. And I will shout your message from the
rooftops.
BE NOTORIOUS:
Be maniacally good at exactly one thing. To a fault. Take something in current news, and take an
extreme position, on one side or the other. Be full of fervor - having a balanced opinion is not
remarkable.
This does not mean you should be someone that you're not. Rather, it means that you should take
an issue you DO believe in, and amplify the volume and frequency of your response.
Those who agree will flock to you.
Those who disagree will criticize you.
Causing even more supporters to flock to you.
See how this could get viral really quickly?
STRETCH MY THINKING:
Ask intriguing questions about your audience. That makes them interact with you.
This is more than just asking obvious questions.
This is asking questions about those innermost wants, needs, fears and concerns of your target
audience.
This is asking "WHAT IF?" questions.
This is making them think, in a manner that stretches them. Stretch their thinking, and they will
want to help other peers do the same.
I hope this article has jogged some new ideas in your mind. Whether you're an Internet Marketing
guru or newbie, you can leverage some of these simple techniques to hit an Internet Viral
Marketing home run.
It's important that you not spend a terribly great amount of time spinning your wheels, or re-
inventing the wheel, however. Your best bet for success is to leverage proven and existing
systems for building content that can go viral, and generate leads for you on virtual auto-pilot.
Nothing is completely hands-off. But writing articles like this one, for example, shows one way in
which you can do the work once, leveraging a proven system, and then have results continuously.
