LEGEND January 2011

Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians!

In this Issue

I love this time of year because we slow down enough to reflect on the past as we

make plans for the future. My holidays were spent with my family and I enjoyed

Principal Letter…….………..Page 1 every minute! But, when they left and the decorations were removed, I began

Principal Letter Spanish…...Page 2 cleaning out closets and drawers. Anything that was not working for me anymore

was “out” and I began the search for things that would work better.

Names & Dates………….…Page 3

That is exactly what we constantly ask our teachers to do. Reflect on what is working

and not working in the classroom. We know that society and our students are

Texas Education Agency changing…and so are we! Constantly researching, piloting and improving is the goal.

School Repot Card………Pages 4-6 I am proud to boast that others recognize our success! On December 1st and

January 10th, Langham Creek hosted seventy CFISD district leaders as we were

selected to be a 21st Century Showcase campus. What does that mean?

st th

School & District News….Pages 8-9 21 Century learning is not new. We are starting our 12 year in this millennium!

opportunities that await our students in the future! Research tells us that we are

Counselor’s Corner…..Pages 10-12 preparing students NOW for jobs that do not even exist yet. Some find that

frightening…I find it exhilarating!

Academically, 21st century learning still focuses on the 3 R’s (Reading, Writing, and

News & Events…........Pages 12-19

Arithmetic), but it also reflects the needs of our nation as we find our world shrinking

with the rapidly changing technology environment. The framework for 21st Century

Athletic Calendars……Pages 20-24 Learning Skills also focuses on the “Seven C’s” (Trilling, 21st Century Skills: Learning

for Life in Our Times.) Those C’s include: critical thinking; creativity and innovation;

collaboration; cross-cultural understanding; communication; computing technology;

and career learning. The 7 C’s multiplied by the 3 R’s equals 21st century learning!

Some of you have already received a letter describing our “Standards-Based

Grading” pilot that is being introduced in several of our content areas this semester.

This pilot is action research founded on research-based practice that has been

successful in other classrooms and districts. Our goal as always is student

LEARNING and we hope to see results this year that will help us make future

decisions about our direction as a campus and district.

Thank you as always for your continuous support! I love seeing you at all our myriad

of events! As you know our fine arts programs and athletics teams are some of the

best in the district! Don’t sit and watch the sad stories on the news! Come out and

see our kids shine! You’ll be glad you did!

Wishing you the best in 2011!

Sincerely,

Cheryl Johns

Letter from the Principal

Estimados padres y tutores legales:

decoraciones, me puse a limpiar armarios y cajoneras.

Eso es exactamente lo que constantemente les pedimos a nuestros maestros que hagan;

constantemente investigando, experimentado y mejorando.

Trilling, 21st Century Skills: Learning for Life in Our Times). Esas siete Cs incluyen: razonamiento

¡Venga a ver relucir a nuestros niños! ¡Se alegrará de haberlo hecho!

¡Les deseo lo mejor en el 2011!

Atentamente,

Cheryl Johns

Delivery Policy

Dear Lobo Parents:

As always, our main concern at LCHS is the safety and education of your student. It is our goal to

support the CFISD policy, protecting student instructional time as mandated by law.

 We will not accept any monetary items at the front desk. This includes checks for

fundraisers and clinics your child may be attending. If you need to give your student

money during the school day, you must sign in at the front desk, go to the attendance

office and wait until the last five minutes of class time for your student to be sent a

note. When the student comes to the attendance office, you may hand him/her the

money.

 We will not accept any floral or balloon deliveries under any circumstances for

students.

 Messages will not be sent to students telling them to come and pick up items at the

front desk. If your student has forgotten something such as lunch, gym clothes,

assignments, etc., you may leave it at the front desk. Your student may stop by the

front desk to pick it up at any time during the day.

 Any valuable item left at the front desk is left at your own risk. We are not responsible

for cameras, clothing, tennis racquets, etc.

 All items not retrieved by the end of the week will either be thrown out (if it is food) or

put in the lost and found (if it is clothing or other school items).

 Messages will not be delivered to a classroom to have a student call home. If

you have a true emergency, your call will be routed to the student’s assistant

principal for them to get the child out of class. Please be advised that telling

your student to ride the bus home or walk home or where you are picking them

up does not constitute a true emergency.

 If your student has a scheduled appointment to leave campus, please send a note in

the morning with your student to take to the attendance office before school. The

attendance office will issue the student a pass to leave class at the designated time.

For an unscheduled appointment, you will need to go to the attendance office, or you

may send a fax for the student to be released. The information on the note should

include the student’s name, time of release, your signature, phone number, and a copy

of your driver’s license. The fax # is 281-345-3153.

 There are no phones for student use in the front office. Pay phones in the commons

are available for use during the school day.

Thank you for your cooperation regarding these standards. Our staff looks forward to another

successful semester with your student.

Counselor’s Corner

The counseling office staff welcomes the opportunity to meet with parents and students. Since the counselors

are often meeting with students and teachers or presenting guidance lessons in the classroom, please call and

leave a message on their voice mail if you would like an appointment to see them or have them call you back.

Did you know that each day during all lunches counselors from the Counseling Office are available in the

Commons? Students have the opportunity to ask a quick question, pick up registration materials for ACT, SAT,

THEA and other related tests, and submit requests to see his/her counselor. One of the major benefits of

Counselors’ Corner is that it does not require a student to miss valuable instruction time, yet provides access to

having questions answered which can propel that student in high school and post-secondary planning.

Langham Creek High School Band and Color Guard

Some of you may have been watching the All-American Bowl Game on NBC last weekend, where the

brightest high school Seniors from across the US are assembled. But what you probably didn’t know

was that Langham Seniors Alex Pena and Kendall Precup were performing at halftime!

These two Senior members of the Lobo Colorguard recently returned from San Antonio, where they

spent the first week of 2011 as members of the All-American Marching Band’s Colorguard. Selected

from over 1,000 applicants, these remarkable young performers were able to work alongside the most

talented high school Seniors in the country, learning an entire 6 minute halftime show in just 22 hours

of rehearsal over the course of 4 days.

Like the football team, band and colorguard Seniors were recruited for this all-star cast based on

talent, training, academic excellence and community service records. Performers were flown in and

housed all week at the Grand Hyatt, taught by some of the best instructors in the country and

mentored by Army officers in the areas of leadership and personal excellence.

Lobo Colorguard Director Tim Newburn just finished his fourth year as the Head Colorguard Coach for

this prestigious event and was able to witness Alex and Kendall in action. “I am so proud of these two

amazing young women. There they were, in the middle of the best of the best, and still leading the

way in terms of work ethic, rehearsal etiquette and team spirit. They represented the Langham way

in every sense.”
