Symbols of American Pride
Dear Parents,
The weeks of December 12 and December 19 our class will be studying symbols of
American pride. The week of January 9, we will be having a parade to celebrate
America. As a participant of the parade representing American patriotism, your child
will design and create a hat representing one of the following symbols for the parade:
American Flag The Jefferson Memorial
Statue of Liberty The Lincoln Memorial
Mt. Rushmore The Liberty Bell
Bald Eagle The White House
The Washington Monument
The hats are due Monday, January 9 so that we have time to present them to the class.
After the parade, all hats will be on display. Your child will need to include an information
card (use the one attached) explaining the significance of their symbol.
Gather and Sort:
You may check out books from the local library as well as check out this website:
http://bensguide.gpo.gov/3-5/symbols/index.html
Use the graphic organizer attached to record your research information. Analyze your
research in the graphic organizer to determine:
1. How the symbol represents America?
2. Why this symbol is important to Americans?
3. How is the symbol used today?
Bring your findings together by creating your hat and information card.
1. What new ideas have you formed about American patriotism?
2. Fill out your information card. Then create your hat, reflecting an American
symbol.
Assessment:
Use the checklist attached for your child’s hat. Bring your hat, information card, and
rubric into school to share on Monday, January 9. If you have any questions please
email me. Thank you!
