January 14: Food & Funny Stories
As has become our custom, the January 14
meeting featured a chili cookoff. There was
plenty of food to go around, including eight
different pots of chili, corn bread, a veggie
tray, and desserts. Tasting the different chilis
was fun. All were good, but none could be
called “five-alarm chili.” It was heartwarming
(and tummy warming) fare. Thanks to Cissy
Rawlings and Judith Tauber for cleaning
up.
After the dinner Randy Barber told stories of
“Naval Aircraft Maintenance”. Randy served
in Guam and Viet Nam where he did
reconaisance with and maintenance on A3D
SkyWarriors. The A3D is a twin-engine jet
that can take off and land from aircraft carri-
ers and carry a hydrogen bomb. However,
the version that Randy worked with was used
mainly for electronic warfare and
reconaisance.
Typical of his stories was one about the time
he left a flashlight in the wing tip of an A3D.
He hastily retrieved it after the airplane flew
its mission. There were too many stories to
recount here, but they were lots of fun. Randy Barber
