INTERNATIONAL CORAL REEF INITIATIVE

Dear ICRI Colleague
SMALL GRANTS SCHEME
As you will know, an innovative and important element of the UK/Seychelles Secretariat is the
funding of two or three small-scale coral reef projects (each costing about £15,000 GBP). The
objective is to provide tangible, quick-win outcomes in line with ICRI’s Framework for Action. This
calls for integrated management of coral reefs, capacity building, research, monitoring and review.
Last month the Secretariat asked ICRI’s operational networks to invite their members to identify and
submit outline proposals for projects that might be funded by the small grants scheme. Eleven
proposals were received. After careful consideration, it was decided that the six projects with the
greatest potential to deliver the objectives of the small grants scheme were:
Monitoring of Portland Blight Protected Area (Caribbean Coastal Data Centre, Jamaca);
Support for Pulau Pasoso Marine Protected Area (Yayasan Adi Citrta Lestarti, Indonesia);
Setting up of Marine Protected Areas close to Urban Areas (Coastal Dynamics Foundation,
Philippines);
Improved Site Based Coral Reef Management in South Asia (SACEP, South Asia);
Site Exchange with St Lucia Marine Management Area (Bonaire Marine Park, St Lucia); and
Blast Fishing Detection and Monitoring (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology,
Philippines).
The sponsors of these projects will post detailed specifications and work programmes on the ICRI
forum for consideration and discussion ahead of the forthcoming ICRI CPC meeting in the Turks and
Caicos Islands (TCI). We would appreciate thoughts on which projects you think best meet ICRI’s
objectives and should be selected for funding. Please post your thoughts on the ICRI forum.
Project sponsors who will be in TCI will have the opportunity to make a short presentation
supporting their proposal. Sponsors who are unable to make the CPC meeting are welcome to ask a
colleague to speak on their behalf. There will also be opportunity for discussion and questions at the
CPC meeting. The meeting will then decide which three projects to fund.
I look forward to a fruitful discussion.
Kind regards
Robert Canning
