The Old Elephant House is a superb old stone building that offers both and indoor and
outdoor entertainment areas, with a gazebo. The setting is park-like and peaceful and it is

Rules The OEH is one of the few venues at the Zoo that caters for
open fires/braais , Potjie kos and parties.
Because of the venue’s proximity to the Zoo’s admin offices,
noise overflow during office hours should be kept to a
minimum
A Zoo staff member to be present at all times
Documentation should be initialed and signed.

A set up fee will be charged should you set up the day before
A 1000 refundable deposit will be charged.
A 50% cancellation fee is payable upon cancellation, after the
contract has been signed and returned to the Johannesburg Zoo.
EVENT TERMS AND CONDITIONS AGREEMENT
All provisional bookings are held for 5 working days after which it has been made. A provisional booking is then
confirmed with a 50% deposit on the venue hire rate.
On receipt of an invoice, a 50% deposit is payable immediately. If a deposit is not received within a week of
confirmation and receipt of an invoice, your function will be cancelled. Cancellation of a function after the venue
is confirmed and an invoice raised, 25% of total invoice will be payable.

50% is payable if a function is cancelled 1 month before your function date. Full payment will be due for a
cancellation 2 weeks before your function date. For bookings in October, November and December, we will
require full payment 1 month before your function date.
All provisional bookings are held for 3 working days after which it has been made. A provisional booking is then
confirmed with a 50% deposit on the venue hire rate.
Venue hire rates will be charged for set-up the day before and strike the day after.
On receipt of an invoice / quote, a 50% deposit is payable immediately. If a deposit is not received within
a week of confirmation and receipt of an invoice, your function will be cancelled.
Cancellation of a function after the venue is confirmed and an invoice raised, 50% of venue cost will be
payable.
50% is payable if a function is cancelled one week before your function date. Full payment will be due
for a cancellation in a shorter period than one week before your function date.
NB: The use of prestik is not permitted on the walls of the venue. If prestik is used on the walls
regardless, the venue deposit will be forfeited. No oils or fats are to be poured down the drain. No left
over food or waste items are to be poured down the drain. The sewage system is very old and this could
block the drain. Non compliance to this rule will result in your deposit being forfeited and the plumbing
cost will be to you or your caterers..
Cancellation
A 50% of the invoice amount is payable should a booking be cancelled, once an invoice has been
issued.

Transport
No vehicles are allowed through the Zoo between 8:30am and 5:30pm except for pre-arranged
deliveries/collections. (Buggies are available for hire.)
Delivery vehicles are allowed to enter the Zoo at the Stores Delivery Entrance, at Upper Park drive,
and they will be directed exactly where to deliver or to collect.
The Company name and car registration number of expected vehicles must be given to us in advance
The driver of any vehicle driven in the Zoo must be briefed to drive at the maximum speed of 20kph.
No scenic drives are allowed except if a Zoo Buggy is used.
No cars are allowed to park at an event venue.
No cars are allowed to park in the middle of the road as this obstructs the free flow of Zoo traffic (Public
transport Ferries, Feeding trucks and walking visitors)
Entertainment
The Johannesburg Zoo is not a concert venue and no live performances are allowed.
Due to animal safety the Zoo does not allow the use of balloons, straws, fireworks and balls of any
kind for entertainment or individual use.
The Zoo does not allow bicycles, scooters, skateboards or any other rides of a similar nature in the Zoo
for the safety of our visitors and our animals.
Musical activities must be communicated with the Zoo’s Venues’ Department and be approved by Zoo
Management prior to being held, due to animal sensitivity considerations.
Certain noise types are a disturbance to the animals and are not allowed in the Zoo.
All entertainment activities must be approved by management. Management has the right to decline a
function due to its nature and entertainment.
Event companies have a wide variety of activities that are not allowed at the zoo. A list of
entertainment activities should be given through for approval before your function may be
confirmed.
Fires
Only gas braais are allowed in the Zoo
Open fire flames or campfires are only allowed at designated areas
Bonfire areas are at the Old Elephant House and Education Centre.Either a Zoo or a restaurant staff
member should control the open fires.
When braaing, care should be taken not to damage the grass or paving surfaces at the venues.
We recommend the use of cardboard underneath the braai to absorb any excess fat or oils. Your
deposit will be forfeited if care is not taken to ensure the property is left as it was found.

Alcohol
Alcoholic beverages are allowed at Private functions and must be restricted to the venue where it is
served (i.e. guests are not allowed to wander around the Zoo with alcohol).
Guests who have overindulged will not be allowed to wander around the Zoo as they can be destructive
to self or animals and property, and may pose a safety and security risk considering that the Zoo
houses wild, dangerous animals.
If alcohol will be sold at your function, a liquor license will be required. A copy should be given to The
Johannesburg Zoo.
Set-up of Equipment
For all marquees to be set-up on our premises, we will require an Engineers Certificate from your
supplier or yourself.
Ferry transport
Ferry transport and guided tours must be pre-booked through the Education Department and must be
booked well in advance as pre-payment is required.
It is the visitor’s responsibility to behave in a responsible manner while on board the Ferry transport.
Ferry transport is boarded at own risk.
The Johannesburg Zoo will not be liable for any incidents/ accidents or mishaps that happen while on
board the ferry transport.
General
Guests are not allowed to wander through the Zoo at night without the escort of a Zoo staff member that
is familiar with the Zoo.
The public is not allowed to feed the animals.
The Johannesburg Zoo will not be liable for any incidents/ accidents or loss or damage to private
property. All equipment left at our venues will be done so at your own risk.
The Zoo does not organise additional resources required for a private function. The Event Organiser is
required to arrange his/her own manpower for an event/function.
