The Matenadaran or Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts in Yerevan, Armenia, is one of the richest
depositories of manuscripts and books in the world. The collection dates back to 405, when Saint Mesrop
Mashtots created the Armenian alphabet. Visit “Ararat” Brandy Factory which was built on 1887. The
brandy produced in this factory in 1900 got “Grant-Pry” in Paris. In 1913 Armenian Brandy was provided to

Day 3: Garni Temple/Gueghard Monastery/National Museum of Armenia
Breakfast at the hotel. Sightseeing tour to Garni Pagan temple. It was built in the first century A.D. by the
Armenian King Tiridates and was dedicated to Mihr: Armenian Sun God. Continue tour to Gueghard Cave
Monastery which is 7km South-East from Garni Temple.
Gueghard Cave Monastery: Gueghard is incredible ancient Armenian monastery, partly carved out of a
mountain. Though the monastery has been around since before the 4th century, the main cathedral was built
in 1215.
Visit National Museum of Armenia: It was built in 1921. Here You may find more than 25,000 canvases
of different centuries and cultures as Ayvazovski, Roussoi, Garzu, Kodjoyan, Saryan, Donatello, etc.
Day 4: Ashtarak/Karmravor church/Ambert/ Yerevan
Breakfast at the hotel. Trip to Ashtarak. Visit Karmravor church.It was built on VII century of reddish
tufa. Karmravor remains in a good state of preservation. Inside of the church You may find canvases
belonging the culture of eastern Christian.
Amberd: Amberd is a fortress complex with a church built on the slopes of Mt. Aragats at 2,300 meters
above sea level in the XI-XIII centuries. The road leading up to it on Mt. Aragats is virtually uninhabited
and has gently sloping hills with the occasional shepherd and beekeeper, many wildflowers and great views.
Amberd is a tall fortress built on a rise in between two streams. The church, built in 1026 by the architect
Vagram Pakhlavuni, is slightly down the hill from the fortress, nearer to where the two streams join.

Day 5: Yerevan /Khor Virap /Areni village/Noravank /Goris
Breakfast at the hotel.
Khor Virap: here you can have the best view of Biblical mountain Ararat. Khor Virap is one of the most
popular destinations in Armenia where Grigor Luisavorich (St. Gregory the Illuminator)-the first Catholicon
of all Armenians- was imprisoned for 13 years.
Noravank: Noravank monastery of 13 th c is listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Noravank ("New monastery") was founded by Bishop Hovhannes, who moved there in 1205.

Day 6. Goris /Khndzoresk/ Karahunch/Selim / Noraduz/Sevan
Excursion tour to Khndzoresk which is a cave village and there are many signs of past settlement
throughout the valley which are just waiting for discovery. There are a very large number of caves. You will
see that many of the caves have been carved out by man and served as houses for people. You will find the
ruins of a village, a beautiful ancient church, and very old tombstones.
Karahunge: Continue tour to Karahunge (Stonehenge), ancient observatory 5mil B.C. Carahunge or
Karahundj, Zorakarer is 3, 500 years older than England’s Stonehenge and 3, 000 years older than the
Egyptian pyramids. The total area of the observatory is 7 hectares. According to the scientist’s findings, a
temple consisting of 40 stones built in honor of the Armenians’ main God, Ari, meaning the Sun, is situated
in the central part of Carahunge. Besides the temple, it had a large and developed observatory, and also a
university that makes up the temple’s wings.
Drive to Lake Sevan through Selim Pass visiting the caravanserai (XIV c.). For many centuries the Great
Silk Road connected a complex network of trade routes from Europe with Asia. It was a way to establish
contact with the great civilizations of China, India, the Near East and Europe. Trade caravans, diplomatic
missions, merchants representatives of religious circles, dervishes, warriors – millions people have passed
on this road through time with nothing frightening these brave travelers, neither the difficult roads, nor the
waterless deserts. The East - West trade routes passed across the Armenian plateau (Selim pass) and favored
the development of the country's economy, trade, commerce and culture.
Noraduz cemetery is a medieval cemetery with a large number of early khachkars located in the village of
Noraduz. About 70 miles north of Yerevan sits lake Sevan the largest alpine in the world. This huge
mountain lake which takes up to 5% of Armenia's surface area and is about 2,000 meters above sea level is
one of the highest among the freshwater lakes in the world. Some three dozen of streamers pour into it and
only one river origins from the lake – Hrazdan. With its history and scenary lake Sevan is among the most

Day 7: Lake Sevan/Dilijan/Parz Lake/Haghartsin/ Yerevan
A walk on the beach of lake Sevan the Gem of Armenia. The tour will continue to Dilijan which is also
called Armenia’s “Little Switzerland”. The forested town has some great examples of traditional architecture
of the region. Continue tour to Haghartsin Monastery. Haghartsin is a 13th century monastery located near
the town of Dilijan, Armenia. It was built between the 10th and 14th century.

Visit Sardarapat Ethnographic Museum. Bearing left before the Sardarapat battle monument, a driveway
skirts the monument ridge to reach a tourist pavilion (refreshments) and the highly attractive Sardarapat
museum. The ground floor central hall contains commemorative material from the battle. Starting from the
right, the lower galleries present archaeological materials from Neolithic to Medieval, and implements for
various traditional handicrafts. Upstairs are exhibits of carpets and embroidery, modern Armenian
decorative ceramics, and jewelry. Return to Yerevan with stop at the ruins of Zvartnots temple - the pearl of
the 7th c. architecture which is listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Day 4: Dilijan/ Celebration of Vardavar/ Sevan

Tour to Dilijan. Visit Haghartsin Monastery in the lush Pambak Mountain range near Dilijan to take part
in the celebration Vardavar, the Transfiguration of Christ, a holiday with roots in pre- Christian Armenia.
Visit Sevan lake. Swim sunbath and simply enjoy your time.

Day 5: Lake Sevan/ Sevan Monastery/ Noraduz/ Selim Pass/ Goris
Breakfast at the hotel. Visit Sevan Monastery on the peninsula 8-9th century. The Church of S.Astvatsatsin
(Mother of God) and the smaller Church of S.Arakelots (Holy Apostles, later S.Karapet) are both located on
a peninsula which was once an island in Lake Sevan. According to an inscription on the south wall of the
Church of S.Arakelots, the monastery was founded in 874 AD and it is attributed to Princess Mariam, the
wife of Prince Vasak of Kapur and the daughter of the Bagratuni King Asot. For several centuries thereafter
it remained an important spiritual center and was a pilgrimage site for thousands of visitors from all parts of
Armenia.

and jewelers silver handicrafts made by Armenian masters.

Day 3: Yerevan/ Lake Sevan/ Goshavank/ Haghartsin Monastery/ Dilijan

Sevanavank- Goshavank
Goshavank was erected in place of an older monastery. Goshavank does not have outer walls, and is
surrounded by village homes. All of the buildings are attached to each other except for S. Hripsime Chapel,
which is on the opposite hillside and within view. Numerous religious and monumental civil buildings show
that in the twelfth—thirteenth centuries the monastery was full of life. The churches are decorated in
accordance with the traditions of the epoch. As a rule, the door portals and windows are framed in
rectangular or arched plat bands some of which are profiled. The facade niches have multifoil or scalloped
tops like those of the niches of Gueghard’s main church. The unusual and artistically framed sun dial on the
southern facade is an eye -catching decorative element.

Day 4: Dilijan/ Ashtarak town/ Karmravor/ Amberd/ Yerevan

Tour to Ashtarak town. Visit Karmravor church. It was built on VII century of reddish tufa. Karmravor
remains in a good state of preservation. Inside of the church You may find canvases belonging the culture of
eastern Christian.
Amberd: Amberd is a fortress complex with a church built on the slopes of Mt. Aragats at 2,300 meters
above sea level in the XI-XIII centuries. The road leading up to it on Mt. Aragats is virtually uninhabited
and has gently sloping hills with the occasional shepherd and beekeeper, many wildflowers and great views.
Amberd is a tall fortress built on a rise in between two streams. The church, built in 1026 by the architect
Vagram Pakhlavuni, is slightly down the hill from the fortress, nearer to where the two streams join.

Tour to Karahunge (Stonehenge), ancient observatory 5mil B.C. Carahunge or Karahundj, Zorakarer is 3,
500 years older than England’s Stonehenge and 3, 000 years older than the Egyptian pyramids. The total
area of the observatory is 7 hectares. According to the scientist’s findings, a temple consisting of 40 stones
built in honor of the Armenians’ main God, Ari, meaning the Sun, is situated in the central part of
Carahunge. Besides the temple, it had a large and developed observatory, and also a university that makes
up the temple’s wings.

What to Expect
What will the weather be like?
Autumn in the Republic of Armenia (late September to early November) has long, warm days and more
stable weather.
The daytime temperature will be warm and sunny. In September, you can expect
high 27’s C. Traditionally it does not rain, but it is recommended
to bring some rain gear in case.
How many hours of cycling a day?
Be prepared to walk between 30 minutes to 4 hours daily.
You are either going up or down almost all the time; however, these are shorter
rolling ascents and descents.
How fit do I need to be?
The fitter the better and some hiking experience is recommended but not required.
What are the cooking schools like?
We use the hotel in Yerevan which is well known for its fine cuisine. The head chef
does do private cooking lessons in a professional working kitchen.
The second class is located in National Armenian Restaurant.
Third lesson takes place in the Hotel in Jermuk.
Lavash will be made in the village near Garni.
