Dear Wedding Couple,
Congratulations on your engagement and upcoming wedding. The Music Ministry at Good
Shepherd is looking forward to assisting you with your wedding service music.
This booklet, along with the companion CD, Good Shepherd Wedding Selections, or online audio
files, and assistance from Good Shepherd wedding musicians, are the main resources you will
need to plan the music for your wedding service. Please begin by reviewing this booklet and
listening to the CD or online audio files.
Once you have made decisions about your wedding music, please fill out the “Please Return”
version of the Wedding Music Information sheet and return it to me at Central Campus. After the
form is received, you will be contacted by phone by me or by Good Shepherd’s Music Assistant,
Sarah Holtz. During this phone call we will be happy to review your plans and answer any
questions you may have. In addition, we will assist you with contacting an organist/pianist or
other musicians you are interested in hiring to serve at your wedding.

Should you have any additional questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact me or

Focus Points for Your Planning
The Wedding Ceremony is a worship service.
Wedding music is selected to create a worship service.
Your involvement in the process is important!

Overview of the Wedding Service Music
Prelude: Music for the prelude is generally chosen by the organist or pianist to set the
tone of the service. It can be a combination of instrumental and vocal music.
Instrumental music usually works best because guests are being seated during
                  this time.

Processional: This is one area where the wedding couple’s input is very important. This
music should be chosen carefully to reflect the overall theme and style of the
wedding. For example, a more subdued entrance may be preferred for the
bridesmaids while a grander, more stately selection might be desired for the
bride’s entrance. Excerpts of compatible pieces can be combined.

Service Music: This part of the service generally includes some vocal solo music. It may also
include music for congregational singing or instrumental music for
communion or lighting of the unity candle. The important decision to be made
here is selecting music that is true to the nature of the service. This is music
that speaks to the Christian aspects of marriage. Included on the Good
Shepherd Music Selections CD are many excellent choices for you to
consider. Often the wedding scripture lessons can be used as a guide to
making decisions about these selections. Examples of wedding scripture
readings are included in this guide.

Recessional: Almost as important as the processional, the couple’s input here is very
important. This selection is used to bring the service to a close in a joyous
manner. There are many excellent selections available for your consideration.
During this time the wedding party recesses from the altar area to the Narthex
                  (lobby).

Postlude: Instrumental music works best for this part of the service as the guests are
being ushered out of church to the Narthex. It is generally chosen and
performed by the organist or pianist.

Hiring of Musicians
Most weddings include an organist and frequently, but not always, a vocalist. It is however,
possible to have for example, a pianist, harpist, guitarist, string quartet or any combination of
these. In most cases it will be necessary for you to contract with performers to serve at your
wedding service.

Good Shepherd’s wedding organists or pianists can also assist you in planning your wedding
music. It is helpful to discuss your wedding music plans with them before contracting with other
musicians. They can also assist you in making contact with a variety of vocalists and
instrumentalists.

Other important notes:
• If you are considering having a guest organist, it is necessary to receive approval from the
Director of Worship & Music at Good Shepherd for use of the organ.
• Be sure to discuss fees and payment arrangements with all of the musicians in advance,
    preferably during the initial conversation.

Organists/
Pianists: Good Shepherd's wedding organists and pianists are talented musicians and
very familiar with weddings at Good Shepherd. It is highly recommended
that you consider them as your first choice. All of Good Shepherd's wedding
                     organists also play piano.

Fees for Good Shepherd's wedding organists and pianists range from $150
to $200 depending on your wedding music plans.

Wedding pianists are also available for weddings at Good Shepherd's West
Campus where only a piano or keyboard is available.

Vocalists: Good Shepherd’s wedding organists or pianists can assist you with contact
names for vocalists. Fees for Good Shepherd's wedding vocalists range from
$75 to $100 depending on your wedding music plans.

Other Musicians: Good Shepherd’s wedding organists or pianists can also assist you with
contact names for various instrumentalists and instrumental ensembles such
as a brass or string quartet.

Recommended Musical Selections
All titles included on the next page are recommended and approved for weddings at Good
Shepherd. Print music for the vocal selections can be checked out from Good Shepherd’s Music
Library if needed. Use of photocopied music is not acceptable. Selections noted with an asterisk
(*) have been recorded by Good Shepherd wedding musicians and are included on the Good
Shepherd Wedding Selections CD included with this packet.

Listening/Reviewing and Making Your Selections

This booklet and the companion CD, Good Shepherd Wedding Selections, are the primary
resources you will need to select music for your wedding. To get started, please review
“Overview of the Wedding Service Music” on page 3 of this document. The three main areas for
which you need to select music include:

       (1) Processional (instrumental)
       (2) Service Music (vocal and/or instrumental)
       (3) Recessional (instrumental)

Music for the prelude and postlude is generally selected by the organist or pianist.

As you consider your choices, it may be helpful to listen to groups of selections at first. For
example, listen to only the Processional selections as a group and then make some initial written
comments. You may find that you like one selection over the others immediately. After you
finish listening and making some notes on one group, continue on to the next in similar fashion.

For your convenience a Wedding Music Information Worksheet page is included in the back of
this booklet for your notes. A separate copy is provided for you to complete and return—it is
marked “Please Return.”
