This directory is compiled from reports kindly submitted by Suffolk teachers and

youth workers – many thanks to all who responded, and a big thank you to all the

colleagues who devoted time and energy to enable young people to benefit from

these activities.

In comparing different centres teachers should bear in mind that the educational value of a

course may depend less on the actual activities offered than on the way those activities

are presented.



Comments such as "recommended" are based on the overall information provided in the

teacher's report and must be regarded as subjective. Changes in centre staff and facilities

occur from year to year, and one group's experience will not necessarily be repeated for

another group on a different occasion. The quoted cost per pupil includes travel from

Suffolk for residential courses only.



The name of the teacher or youth worker making the report is included with the entry. All

named leaders have indicated their willingness to be contacted by leaders of other groups

seeking further information on the centre visited. Where this is not the case, for example

where a teacher was due to leave the school, this is noted with the entry.



Where a provider has been awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge

this is noted. Schools are recommended to choose Quality Badged providers where they

exist. Providers not shown as badged may be working towards this award and achieve it

during the currency of this directory.



Ski Tour Operators (Page 90)



Reports on school ski courses are also included in this directory. The method of travel is

indicated rather than the activities (which are presumed to be skiing, though sometimes

include snow-boarding).

NB: All ski courses and all proposed visits by County maintained schools or youth

groups to adventure activity centres must be approved by the Outdoor

Education Officer and authorised by the Area Education Manager before

bookings are confirmed or deposits paid. The standards of provision at a

given centre can vary from year to year. The inclusion of a centre in this

directory does not automatically imply that approval for visits by County

schools or youth groups will be granted in future years.

Thorpe Woodlands is a unique outdoor education centre, which offers a broad range of

challenging activities in a safe, supportive and fun environment. The centre has camping

facilities that can accommodate up to 50 people and also caters for those groups wishing

to visit just for the day.



The centre offers team-building challenges, environmental/conservation projects, water-

based activities, high ropes activities, off-road cycling, expeditions and much more.

Although the activity programmes are designed to be challenging, the emphasis is always

on learning through enjoyment.



Supported by lottery funding, a new 37 bed residential hostel opened at Thorpe

Woodlands in 2009.

SWSA at Alton Water (Stutton) - in partnership with the Alton Water Sports Centre



The four county water sports centres are managed in partnership with Suffolk Water

Sports Association. They provide a range of day and evening water-based activities for

schools and youth groups. SWSA is renowned for providing a wide range of high quality,

exciting water sports opportunities for young people, teachers, youth workers and adults.

The centres offer canoeing, sailing and windsurfing and provide a variety of introductory

and progressive courses leading to recognised qualifications and instructor training.
