2001
The University of New South Wales: Braub scuebces ubckydes sine scross-disciplinary enrolments listed as Social Sciences in the broad classifications.
University of Southern Queensland: KC refers to Key Clusters. These are listed on page 2 of Appendix A and detailed in Section I of Appendix A of the RRTMR.
Murdoch University: Areas of Research Strength within S&T encompass many staff and students that would otherwise be categorised in the broad area of A,H&SS however, as per instructions,
the Areas of Research Strength have been placed in the category of closest fit - which predominantly is S&T.
The Flinders University of South Australia: As data on areas of research strength were not provided in the 2002 RRTMR, and Flinders University advised that their approach had not changed
from 2001, areas of research strength from the 2001 RRTMR have been included.
The University of Adelaide: Due to the introduction of ABS Field of Education codes for disciplines in 2001, approx 13 EFTSU of load in the Earch Science classification would previously have been
classified as Agriculture in the RRTMR 2000 (using pre 2001 discipline codes).
The Australian National University: The University’s National Institutes (see page 2 of RRTMR) cover all principal areas of research. All Institutes contain (by design) significant cross disciplinary
linkages and multiple memberships and are thus not able to be directly listed under any particular area of research above . They each build critical mass in their area of interest and unify the
University’s research effort.
University of Canberra: See RRTMR Attachment 3 to Part B for more information on top research strengths.

Notes:
Macquarie University (column 11): Information is currently only available for staff at Macquarie University.
Macquarie University (column 13): In 2002 a series of supervisor workshops commenced. It is anticipated that at least 20 per cent of supervising staff will attend workshops each year.
The University of New England (column 13): It is difficult to put an accurate percentage on this at present. As noted elsewhere, UNE is moving towards a more formalised system of supervisor development, and formal training/enhancement is at the centre of that development.
The University of Newcastle (column 9): The number of staff eligible to supervise is based on 'people' not FTE, incluxdes some honorary staff but does not include conjoint staff.
The University of Newcastle (column 10): Research students may have a single supervisor or a panel of supervisors. The data in column 10 is of all supervisors as a supervisor who is assisting in the supervision of a research student may be as experienced as the principal supervisor.
The University of Newdcastle (column 11): Data are not available/not applicable (see note for column 10).
The University of Newcastle (column 12): The University of Newcastle has research higher degrees in areas such as Design, Fine Arts and Music where theoretical knowledge must be combined with professional practice and performance skills (rather than the traditional PhD)
as the relevant indices of high level competency.
The University of Newcastle (column 13): A formal supervisor training and development program is planned to commence in Semester 2, 2002.
University of Technology, Sydney (column 7): These numbers are based on first named CI only, and as such underestimate the number of staff who generated research income in 2000. Our current financial system does not allow us to store co-investigators.
In the Science & Technology, and Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences clusters, numbers of staff generating income would be significantly higher were co-investigators able to be included in the calculation.
University of Technology, Sydney (column 13): For the purpose of this exercise 'supervisor training' was defined as participation in one or more of a number of activities: workshops, conferences related to supervisor development, a mentoring program, delivery of a paper or
workshop related to supervision, participation in an on-line activity, a staff forum, or any other relevant activity. A confidential survey of supervisors was conducted; there was a 61% return rate with 16% indicating they did not participate in any supervisor development.
University of Western Sydney (column 7): First named investigators only.
University of Western Sydney (column 14): Includes all supervisors - principal and associate.
Melbourne College of Divinity (column 1, 2, 10, 11): Current MCD databases are currently unable to supply this information for 2001. 2002 data will be able to be reported.
Melbourne College of Divinity (column 7): Funding was generated by colleges, not individuals.
The University of Melbourne (column 3, 4, 5): The discrepancy between the sum of the three clusters (see Appendix 3) and the total reported to the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) is due to $889,000 of research donations income not having a corresponding
Research Field, Course and Discipline Code. The research income for Controlled Entities has also been excluded.
The University of Melbourne (column 7, 8, 9, 10, 11): These data were taken from the Survey of Individual Academic Profiles conducted by the University of Melbourne. Personnel from the Victorian College of the Arts did not participate in the survey as they are not employees
of the University. The Survey involved all academic staff members of Level A and above with an appointment of at least 0.5 full-time equivalent. The total number surveyed was 2,106.
The University of Melbourne (column 12, 13, 14): The denominator is 1,114 which refers to the number of people who supervised HDR students, whether as a principal or associate supervisor. A further 4.2% undertook supervisor training of less than half a day duration.
Victoria University of Technology (column 14): This is the proportion of supervisors who had a student classified in 2001. Includes only VU staff in 2001. Includes both principal and co-supervisors.
Griffith University (column 9): Eligibility determined by staff holding a PhD or MPhil, however others not included may be eligible.
Griffith University (column 13): University-wide program only, does not account for supervision training undertaken at a local school/faculty level.
The University of Queensland (column 8): Excludes clinical, adjunct and emeritus staff.
The University of Queensland (column 9, 10, 12, 13, 14): Only staff eligible to be principal supervisors rather than associate supervisors are reported.
Curtin University of Technology (column 1, 2): See notes in RRTMR concerning: (1) comparison of 2002 and 2001 HDR load; (2) load allocations to designated areas of research strength; (3) allocation of Divisions to research clusters; and (4) treatment of Curtin Business School.
Curtin University of Technology (column 7, 8): Data have been collected through the University Research Performance Index (RPI) system which records performance in relation to research income, professional practice and publications. The system may under-report.
Curtin University of Technology (column 9): At the time of reporting only 85% of academic staff had submitted relevant information, thus the figures provide an underestimate of the actual number of staff in this category. More accurate figures will be available in 2003.
Curtin University of Technology (column 11): This category counts staff who supervised in this category only and did not supervise HDR students as either a principal or co-supervisor.
Edith Cowan Univesity (column 10, 11): All supervisors (principal and associate) are included in column 10.
Edith Cowan Univesity (column 12): HR records do not distinguish between staff holding research or coursework master qualifications. Thus this figure is based on an estimate of proportion of masters degrees which are research degrees.
The University of Notre Dame Australia (column 13): Notre Dame did not hold supervisor training courses in 2001. It is one of the aims of the Centre for Reesearch and Graduate studies to develop such courses for the University's supervisory staff.
The Flinders University of South Australia (column 7, 8, 9, 10, 11): Totals include persons holding academic status at Flinders University, the majority of whom are employees of the co-located Flinders Medical Centre, in which the Flinders School of Medicine is based.
The Flinders University of South Australia (column 7): Includes 10 staff members who are not located organisationally within Faculties.
The Flinders University of South Australia (column 9): Includes 18.12 FTE staff members who are not located organisationally within Faculties. Academic status holders are significantly represented in HDR supervision, but are recorded as FTE. If actual-person numbers were used,
the overall totals would be 607 staff, and 454 status holders (total 1,061 eligible supervisors).
The Flinders University of South Australia (column 10 ): This category includes persons with Flinders University academic status. Includes 10 staff members who are not located organisationally within Faculties.
The Flinders University of South Australia (column 11): Co- and Joint Supervisors, in accordance with Flinders categories, and including persons with Flinders University academic status. Includes 121 supervisors who have academic status, or who are staff members
not located organisationally within Faculties.
The Flinders University of South Australia (column 12): 71.95 per cent is the share of 2002 supervisors who are/were employees of Flinders University. The share of supervisors who have/had Flinders University academic status is 71.26 per cent.
The Flinders University of South Australia (column 13): 3.05 per cent is the share of 2002 supervisors who are/were employees of Flinders University. The share of supervisors who have/had Flinders University academic status is 10 per cent.
The Flinders University of South Australia (column 14): 28.1 per cent is the share of 2002 supervisors who are/were employees of Flinders University. The share of supervisors who have/had Flinders University academic status is 20 per cent.
The University of Adelaide (column 9, 10): The categories of principal and associate supervisor are not mutually exclusive. For example, a member of staff may be the principal supervisor of one HDR student and the associate supervisor of a different HDR student.
Australian Maritime College (column 9): This figure includes 'honorary lecturers' engaged for supervisory purposes and work on the MBA (MRM) program.
University of Tasmania (column 2): This takes into account the change in definition of commencing students in 2001 as one semester only in accordance with the RTS guidelines.
University of Tasmania (column 7, 8): Numbers of staff that generated income and publications includes Honorary Research Associates and Casuals (as per advice received from DEST 22 May 01).
University of Tasmania (column 7): Income was apportioned to clusters on a proportional basis for each individual. Univesity of Tasmania collects up to three RFCD codes for each grant and consultancy, which were matched to the actual income reported in the HERD.
University of Tasmania (column 8): 2001 publication information now reflects 7 categories in comparison to previous years 4 categories.
University of Tasmania (column 9): Includes academics that are known to have a Research Masters or PhD. Staff were assigned to a cluster according to their School.
University of Tasmania (column 10): Includes all types of supervisors (Supervisor, Co-supervisor, Research Supervisor, Associate Supervisor, Consultant) some of which will be external the the University.
The Australian National University (column 7): Only 25% of IAS staff were eligible to apply for Australian Competitive Grants in 2001.
The Australian National University (column 9): Level B and above academic staff.
The Australian National University (column 10): This includes students for 2001 and preceding years of enrolment.
The Australian National University (column 12): Partially estimated due to the limitations of available data as a consequence of the implementation of a new human resources management system.
The Australian National University (column 13): Note that ANU has been conducting this training as part of formal induction training for new and less experienced supervisors since 1996. Over this period 216 persons (and a further 34 from industry) have attended.
The Australian National University (column 14): Number of supervisors who have supervised to completion - others may have been involved at earlier stages.
University of Canberra (column 11): See RRTMR Attachment 3 to Part B for additional information on the number of HDR completions.

Notes
* S&T = Science and technology; H&M = Health and medical; A,H&SS = Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
** Some totals differ from those in Appendix 2. This is due to (1) rounding; (2) in the case of columns 3-5 the largest part is explained in notes below for The University of Melbourne; and (3) for columns 7, 9, 10 and 11
is explained in notes below for The Flinders University of South Australia.
Macquarie University (column 11): Information is currently only available for staff at Macquarie University.
The University of Newcastle (column 9): The number of staff eligible to supervise is based on 'people' not FTE, incluxdes some honorary staff but does not include conjoint staff.
The University of Newcastle (column 10): Research students may have a single supervisor or a panel of supervisors. The data in column 10 is of all supervisors as a supervisor who is assisting in the supervision of a research
student may be as experienced as the principal supervisor.
The University of Newdcastle (column 11): Data are not available/not applicable (see note for column 10).
University of Technology, Sydney (column 7): These numbers are based on first named CI only, and as such underestimate the number of staff who generated research income in 2000. Our current financial system does
not allow us to store co-investigators. In the Science & Technology, and Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences clusters, numbers of staff generating income would be significantly higher were co-investigators able to be
included in the calculation.
University of Western Sydney (column 7 ): First named investigators only.
Melbourne College of Divinity (column 1, 2, 10, 11): Current MCD databases are currently unable to supply this information for 2001. 2002 data will be able to be reported.
Melbourne College of Divinity (column 7): Funding was generated by colleges, not individuals.
The University of Melbourne (column 3, 4, 5): The discrepancy between the sum of the three clusters and the total (see Appendix 2) reported to the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) is due to $889,000 of
research donations income not having a corresponding Research Field, Course and Discipline Code. The research income for Controlled Entities has also been excluded.
The University of Melbourne (column 7, 8, 9, 10, 11): These data were taken from the Survey of Individual Academic Profiles conducted by the University of Melbourne. Personnel from the Victorian College of the Arts did not
participate in the survey as they are not employees of the University. The Survey involved all academic staff members of Level A and above with an appointment of at least 0.5 full-time equivalent. The total n
number surveyed was 2,106.
Griffith University (column 9): Eligibility determined by staff holding a PhD or MPhil, however others not included may be eligible.

The University of Queensland (column 8): Excludes clinical, adjunct and emeritus staff.
The University of Queensland (9, 10, 12, 13, 14): Only staff eligible to be principal supervisors rather than associate supervisors are reported. Excludes clinical, adjunct and emeritus staff.
Curtin University of Technology (column 1, 2): See notes in RRTMR concerning: (1) comparison of 2002 and 2001 HDR load; (2) load allocations to designated areas of research strength; (3) allocation of Divisions to
research clusters; and (4) treatment of Curtin Business School.
Curtin University of Technology (column 7, 8): Data have been collected through the University Research Performance Index (RPI) system which records performance in relation to research income, professional practice
and publications.
Edith Cowan University (column 10, 11): All supervisors (principal and associate) are included in column 10.
The Flinders University of South Australia (column 7, 8, 9, 10, 11): Totals include persons holding academic status at Flinders University, the majority of whom are employees of the co-located Flinders Medical Centre, in which

Notes:
As indicated in the RRTMR Guidelines, details concerning individual institutions' revenue from licences and equity stakes in spin-off companies will not be published.
Queensland University of Technology (column 8): This figure has been amended to provide consistency with the approach QUT adopted in providing data to the ARC and NHMRC Survey of Research Commercialisation 2000, and the definitions of
commercialisation etc used in that survey. Consequently, QUT lists four licences above, removing all reference to licence arrangements that do not directly and immediately involve commercialisation.
University of the Sunshine Coast: As a University at the early stages of developing a research profile, naturally there has not yet been any commercialisation of intellectual property. However, as indicated above, the University is investing in
the development and commercialisation of intellectual property and expects results to commence flowing in the near future.
University of Notre Dame: As yet the University of Notre Dame Australia has not developed its research capability in any area which has led to the patenting of products of research activity.
The University of Adelaide (column 8): Total of 12 licenses in existence for cereal breeding in 2001 (1 of which was issued in 2001) and there are a further 10 licenses in existence that are associated with inventions.
