Welcome to

The Calgary Corporate Blood Donor Challenge 2009

The Canadian Blood Services’ Blood Donor Challenge is a great way for

all your employees, friends and family members to get involved in the

games, earn points and save lives!

We want to thank you for your commitment and support. The blood you

donate will bring life and hope to hospital patients – possibly a cancer

patient, a premature baby, someone with a blood disorder or someone

who has suffered a serious trauma.

Special message from a blood recipient

“I truly believe that everything you do is a statement to the rest of the world of your

personal character, and by donating your time and your blood you have shown the world the

amazing person that you are.

I never thought I’d need blood or blood products; I still hardly believe that I did. Now that I

know how critical it is to cancer survival, I wish I had donated every 56 days of my adult life.

You have the opportunity to keep providing. I only hope you realize the power you have to

save human lives. I can’t donate any more – but you can…. You are truly a hero!”

Thank you.

Mike Metcalf

Recipient, Cancer survivor

Your donations and time are a wonderful gift for a future

recipient and we thank you for that.

Please make sure that all donors sign the Calgary Corporate Challenge

binder at the clinic!

CONFIRM YOUR REGISTRATION IN THE CHALLENGE

Download the on line registration form.

Complete the promotional material order form.

Update and fax to 403-410-2798 or

e-mail Carmen.caspar@blood.ca (or call 403-410-27422)

BOOK A LIFE BUS or GROUP DONATIONS

Call Carmen at 403-410-2722 or email carmen.caspar@blood.ca.

Carmen will help you find a location, date and time that will work for your group

(usually earlier in the day tends to go faster).

Tell Carmen how many people you expect (5 – 7 donors is the ideal number for a

Life Bus).

The Life Bus will pick you up and drop you back at work (free).

Depending on the size of your group, it will take approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours,

including transportation for your group to complete their donations.

Remember if you book 3 group appointments with 5 - 7 people or more, you will

get 10 extra credits (these appointments must be kept to get the points).

Book all your appointments through the challenge and we’ll remind you a few

days before.

…JOIN PARTNERS FOR LIFE AND DONATE YEAR ROUND

Some of the most successful teams are also members of Canadian Blood Services’

Partners for Life program. Your team has shown they believe in blood donation.

Foster this sense of teamwork and goodwill throughout the year! Ask about joining

Partners for Life.

Please make sure that all donors sign the Calgary Corporate Challenge

binder at the clinic!

5

PROMOTE BLOOD DONATION TO YOUR TEAM

Make group appointments! For most companies, this is the most effective way to

encourage your team to donate. Your staff will be more likely to participate if you

give them a specific date and time and provide transportation! The Life Bus is

available to transport your team to and from a clinic.

Ask managers or supervisors to make an announcement supporting the blood

donor challenge during a staff meeting.

Add a link on your intranet to our website (www.blood.ca) for potential donors to

get more information.

Every 2 weeks, we’ll send an email update – forward this to your team to make

sure they know your company standings. Add your own personal message for

extra motivation.

Ask for help – especially if your company is large, enlist current donors to help

recruit more people.

Make sure family and friends know they can be included.

TOOLS TO HELP YOU

Let us know what material you need to spread the word.

Call us and book a Lunch and Learn and/or a What’s Your Type to encourage your

colleagues to donate.

Invite a speaker from Canadian Blood Services or a blood recipient to address your

team at a general meeting.

Invite Canadian Blood Services to host an information session or booth at your

next company event (challenge kick off, health fair, lunch hour in the lobby).

Ask us for e-posters to send to all your Challenge participants.

Order Canadian Blood Services sports jerseys to wear when you donate as a group.

(Go to www.blood.ca, choose Shop, SHOP NOW, and check out Casual Wear)

Please make sure that all donors sign the Calgary Corporate Challenge

binder at the clinic!

6

EARNING CREDITS

WIN IN YOUR DIVISION

Start early – the winning teams usually have their appointments booked a few

months in advance.

Take advantage of extra credits.

Make sure every donation counts – remind donors to sign the challenge binder.

Set a company goal based on your past year’s results or check out the list of

participants and decide who you want to beat.

CORPORATE CHALLENGE POINTS

Every team who participates in the Calgary Corporate Blood Donor Challenge will

be awarded 2 points for signing up. These points will go towards your overall score

for the entire games.

The top six teams in each division (who earn the most credits) will be awarded

points towards the Calgary Corporate Challenge Games (as per the Calgary

Corporate Challenge scoring rules).

Earning Credits

Each blood, plasma or platelet donor will be awarded one credit toward their

team score.

A half credit will be awarded to donors who attend a clinic but are not able to

donate that day (as a result of a deferral).

Only participants from the company, family and friends should sign the

challenge binder.

WHO CAN DONATE FOR YOUR TEAM?

o We encourage everyone who meets the eligibility criteria to donate.

However, if you know you aren’t eligible to donate, please do not

take a life saving appointment space away from someone who may be

eligible.

o Staff, family, friends, suppliers and other contacts can donate on

behalf of your team.

o When at the clinic, please do not solicit donors who are not

connected to your team to sign the binder on your behalf.

Please make sure that all donors sign the Calgary Corporate Challenge

binder at the clinic!

7

Easy Ways to get Extra Credits

There’s a first time for everything:

One extra credit will be awarded to first time donors in whole blood, plasma

and platelets.

Saddle-up:

One extra credit will be awarded to all donors donating around Stampede

(July 3rd – July 12th ).

Good things come in groups:

Ten extra credits will be awarded when your team books 3 group appointments

with at least 5 - 8 donors each time (extra credits will be withdrawn if

appointments are not honoured).

Here’s a tip!

Because there is a 56 day wait period between donations, one person can make

a maximum of three donations if their first donation is made between April

16th and May 21st.

In order to ensure the maximum numbers of staff are eligible to donate, try

making your group appointments in sets of 3. After May 21st you are eligible to

book again July 16th.

Turn up the frequency:

Remember, Platelets can be donated every two weeks and Plasma can be

donated every week! A great way to get extra credits.

Please make sure that all donors sign the Calgary Corporate Challenge

binder at the clinic!

8

INFORMATION FOR BLOOD DONORS

Every blood donation will help to save or improve the lives

of three people

why blood is needed:

Donating Blood - A Safe Procedure

Donating blood does not put you at risk of disease. All needles are sterile, used only once and

discarded. The usual blood collection – a “unit” – is about half a litre, or one pint. Your body

soon replaces all the blood you donate.

Please make sure that all donors sign the Calgary Corporate Challenge

binder at the clinic!

9

THE DONATION PROCESS

Once you check in, your iron level will be tested. Then you complete a

questionnaire to determine your eligibility.

In a private and confidential setting, a nurse will ask a number of questions to

ensure you are eligible.

Your blood pressure and temperature are measured.

The actual donation takes about 5 to 15 minutes.

Your body soon replaces all the blood you donate. The average amount of blood

in one person is five litres. Each donation is approximately 455 ml of blood.

After the donation you will rest and enjoy some refreshments.

Each donation is sent to our lab to be tested and split into different components:

plasma, platelets and red blood cells. Each component can be used to help a

different person depending on their need.

Please make sure that all donors sign the Calgary Corporate Challenge

binder at the clinic!
