Year Events
1972 Industrial and Business Orientation Programme (IBOP) started.
1976 443 students placed in 141 establishments under the IBOP programme.
1980 IBOP: 771 NP students in 162 establishments.
1986 IBOP: 2549 NP students in 743 establishments.
1987 IBOP was renamed as Vacation Training Programme.
Overseas Attachment programme were arranged for 26 students who
went for vacation training in Canada, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia,
Sri Lanka, Taiwan, UK, USA, and West Germany.
The Singapore Association of Shipbuilding and Repairers (SASAR)
members announced their strong support of the Shipbuilding and
Offshore Engineering course with an offer of 4 sponsorships and 13
scholarships.
NP signed a technology transfer agreement with Hewlett Packard under
the acronym NITECH.
1988 NP and IBM signed an agreement under the acronym INPECT which
was a collaboration between the two organizations for technology
transfer to industry.
The Poly continued to assist SME to upgrade their staff with up-to-date
technical skills. The Mechanical Engineering Dept conducted a
Technical Training Course on Computer Numerical control for trainee
sales personnel an application engineers from two companies-
Flexmech Engineering Pte Ltd and LeBlond Makino Asia Pte Ltd.
1989 NP launched its LINKS ( Liaison Network with Schools) Programme
during the Seminar on Polytechnic education.
1990 The Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering Department, in conjuction
with the Association of Singapore Marine Industry (ASMI), organized
a forum on Careers in the Marine Industry on 17 Feb.
On 8 May, NP and Fujitsu ( S) Pte Ltd signed an agreement on a
Computer Based Training(CBT) Joint Development Project.
A Vacation Training Unit, headed by a Director, was set up on 1
September to better co-ordinate the Vacation Training Programme.
The NP-Industry Joint Training Scheme(NPIJTS) was launched on 19
Oct. 183 companies joined the scheme.
The Ngee Ann Industry Technology Exchange Centre (NITEC) was
officially launched on 12 November to strengthen NP’s links with
industry.
1991 An MOU was signed with the NUH on 26 Feb to conduct jointly a
Medical Science laboratory Option as part of the Biotechnology course.
A collaboration between the Centre for Computer Studies (CCS) and
ICL Singapore Pte led was formed. The collaboration was aimed at
establishing CCS as the largest Open Systems Computer Education and
Training centre in South East Asia.
A 2nd MOU was signed between NP and Fijitsu (S) Pte Ltd to develop
ISDN Distance Learning. The collaboration in developing and
implementing ISDN Distance Learning was the first of its kind in Asia
Pacific Region.
A MOU to launch the NP-Telecom Equipment Joint Design and
Development Fund was signed with Telecom Equipment Pte Ltd on 23
Oct.
1992 The Centre for Computer Studies and Microsoft Singapore signed a
MOU to launch a Software Technology Transfer Programme.
A MOU was signed with the University of East Anglia, UK, to set up a
Centre for Computers in Teaching Initiative (CTI) to promote
computer-based learning in accountancy.
An institutional agreement between NP and the Gerog-Simon-Ohm
Fachhochschule Nurnberg, Bavaria, Germany was signed on 24 April
for mutual developments and exchange programmes.
A new collaboration between NP and Sony Precision Engineering
Centre (S) Pte Ltd was established on 14 August. The collaboration
was aimed at establishing the Centre for Quality UNIQUE programme.
The 1992 Vacation Training Programme saw a total of 1561 companies
offered 3870 placements, of which 83.8 per cent was from the private
sector.
1993 The 1993 Overseas Vacation Training Programme (OVTP) saw record
number of 81 students sent to 14 countries.
On 20 October, a MOU was signed with Fluke Corporation, to set up
the new Metrology, Instrumentation and Calibration Training
centre(MICTC) in NP.
A MOU between NP and Kake Educational Institution was signed on
30 Nov. It was the first official link with Japan for NP.
1994 NP signed a MOU with Informatics Holdings to market the Poly’s
Computerised English Language Proficiency Test (CELPT) as a public
examination in PRC China.
1995 NP signed a MOU with OMRON Singapore Pte Ltd on 21 Jan to
develop a programmable Controller and Automation Centre on
campus.
A MOU between NITEC and the Association of Small and Medium
Enterprises was signed on 21 Feb for mutual development
programmes.
A MOU was signed between the Advanced Information and
technology Application Centre ( AITAC) and Vrex Inc. on 17 April for
mutual research and development programmes on virtual reality
applications in the field of education.
In conjunction with the opening of the Autofact Asia ’95 exhibition
held at Suntec City on 10 July, an agreement to promote product
development technology in Singapore was signed between NP and
Accerlerated technologies Singapore (ATS) Pte Ltd.
The Centre for Computer Studies and Microsoft Singapore signed a
second MOU on 8 Aug to further strengthen the successful partnership
first established in 1992.
The Automation Technology Fair, held from 21 to 22 Sep, was jointly
organized by OMRON(S) Pte Ltd, Precicon Automation (S) Pte Ltd,
SMC Pneumatics (SEA) Pte Ltd, ID Technology Pte Ltd and NP. The
seminar attracted more than 2500 participants from industry.
A MOU , to train students and staff in the automation of shipbuilding
processes, was signed between the Dept of Shipbuilding and Offshore
Engineering and Kockums Computer Systems AB (KCS) on 20 Nov.
The Advanced Information Technology Application Centre(AITAC)
successfully completed a major project for Sembawang Shipyard by
producing CD-ROM courseware on Shipyard safety Training. More
results were undertaken as a result of this success.
1996 NP signed a MOU with the Association of Singapore Realtors (ASR)
on 11 May for mutual benefits and co-operation between industry and
the institution.
The Star Cruise Resource Centre was established in NP with the
signing of an MOU between NP and Star Cruise Pte Ltd on 24 May.
The Dept of Accountancy signed an MOU with the six International
Public Accounting Firms to allow students to undergo a six-month long
attachment with these companies.
1997 Six graduates from the Dept of Film and Media Studies became the
first from Singapore to be sent to Warner Bros, Hollywood, for a 10-
month training stint in the latest Digital Video Disc (DVD)
Technology.
Red Claw Lobster Research Pte Ltd , a JV by the Dept of
Biotechnology with the private sector to research and develop the
culturing and breeding of redclaw lobster and other shellfish. It also
provides consultancy services for high-yielding farming.
1998 With an MOU signed on 13 Feb between the Dept of Electrical
Engineering and Drawbase Software, the first Computer Aided Design
(CAD) Training Centre was set up to serve both students and industry
users.
The Integrative Industry Project (IIP) and the Business Industry
Practicum (BIP) were officially launched on 15 May.
An MOU was signed between NP and the Chartered Institute of
Management Accounts (CIMA) on 10 October to launch the
Accountancy Practical Training (APT) programme where students
undergo a six-month attachment to participating companies from the
CIMA-Singapore Employers’ Group.
1999 A MOU was signed with A.C.E. Daikin (S) Pte Ltd on 16 April to set
up Asia’s first Digital Media Authoring Studio in the Centre for Film&
Media Studies, aimed to equip students and professionals with the
relevant core skills in DVD technology and production.
Under an MOU with AMP Singapore on 16 April, NP set up the
Structured Cabling Design Centre at the Dept of Electrical
Engineering.
The Dept of Electronic & Computer Engineering signed an MOU with
SCM Microsystems (Asia) Pte Lte on 25 June to develop a Biometrics
Verification System which uses the individual’s fingerprints for
authentication.
A new three-phase part-time Hotel Management Training Programme,
conducted jointly by the Dept of Business Studies and three hotels,
namely the Pan Pacific, Marina Mandarin and the Oriental Singapore
was launched on 1 Mar.
NP signed a new MOU with the newly formed Institute of Estate
Agents on 24 Mar.
2001 The Centre of Computer Studies (CCS) signed an MOU with BMC
Software on 8 Jan to incorporate BMC Software in an E-commerce
Technology Transfer Programme for staff and students.
2002 The Building and Environment division signed an MOU with PWD
Corporation Pte Ltd for student and staff training. PWD Corp will
provide placements for final year students under six-month Industrial
Attachment Programmes(IAP).
