  About Dunes planting Events
Brazoria County beaches have been enjoyed by millions of Brazoria County citizens and out-of-state visitors throughout the years. But how would you feel if your
grandchildren and great-grandchildren never get to share this experience?
On September 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike made landfall on Galveston Island and surrounding counties, including Brazoria County. One project that will not be covered by
FEMA is the restoration of Brazoria County sand dunes between Access Road 1 through Access Road 7 (Follett’s Beach), and approximately half of a mile of Quintana
Beach. This totals to approximately 14 miles of beach (17 acres). Storm surges resulting from Hurricane Ike washed away much of the County’s protective sand dunes.
According to the Dune Protection and Improvement Manual for the Texas Gulf Coast,
dunes were already scarce along the Brazos-Colorado River headland (also referred to as the southern portion of Brazoria County), since there is not enough dune-
  building sand available.
Sand dunes are resilient to wind and waves, serving as an efficient defense against storm-surge flooding and beach erosion. Dunes prevent or delay invasive water
into inland areas by absorbing the impact of storm surge and high waves. Sensitive inland habitats, including Christmas Bay and the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge,
become more vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical storms when the dune line is weakened.
Brazoria County Parks Department proposes to partner with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Texas Master Naturalists Cradle of Texas Chapter, the Save Our Beach
Association (SOBA), and the Brazoria County Road and Bridge Department (Precincts) to plant 100,000 dune grass plants along this 14 mile section of dunes.

  • Bitter panicum (Panicum Anarum) is a native beach plant that has a higher salt tolerance than many other coastal species, and is a hardy grower. New plants
are generated from shoots that grow from nodes on the roots, since its seeds are sterile. Because of this, each plant should yield up to three additional plants.
  • Marsh-hay cord-grass (Spartina Patens) is found in high marsh zones where it is covered at times by high tides. Specialized cells are able to exclude salt from
entering the roots, preventing the loss of fresh water. This grass is more tolerant to salt water than other marsh grasses.
  • Sea oats (Chasmanthium Latifolium) are perennial grass plants that spread quickly, producing dense stands of vegetation which traps blowing sand and build
        sand dunes.
Ten “Dune Restoration” events will be held (twice a month for five months) with the aid of our partners to encourage the community to participate in dune planting and
increase awareness of the importance of dune restoration and protection.
A project of this magnitude will require the efforts of the entire community, as “County” effort alone will not be enough to complete this very important project.
Volunteers for projects such as this one will not only assist the Brazoria County Parks Department in meeting local match requirements, but becoming involved in
community efforts is the key to a better community, as it will allow for more grant application submittals.
The Brazoria County Park’s Department needs your help in order to ensure that our local beaches will be here for our grandchildren and generations to come. Please
make plans to join us in keeping Brazoria County beaches secure on the upcoming “Dune Planting Events” to be held during the months of November 2010 through
March 2011. To get dates, times and to pre-register, please call the department at 979-864-1541, or email the Special Events Coordinator (jglover@brazoria-county.
com) and the Parks Planning and Development Specialist (lgarcia@brazoria-county.com).

Why the pearland
Afterschool program?
We keep kids safe.
According to a 2009 Afterschool Alliance study, 15.1 million children across the country take care
of themselves once the school day concludes. Consequently, the hours between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
are the peak hours for juvenile crime and experimentation with drugs and alcohol. The Pearland
Afterschool Program offers supervised time for kids to learn new skills, develop relationships
with caring adults and prepare for the future. It also offers you, the parent, one important thing
– peace of mind in. You can rest easy knowing that your child is safe with us.

your community will thank you.
The No Child Left Behind Act outlines a model whereby all members of the community
benefit from access to academic enrichment activities that can help students meet state and
local achievement standards. The Pearland Afterschool Program not only offers a broad array of
lessons designed to complement Pearland ISD’s regular academic program, but also focuses on
shaping upstanding citizens of tomorrow. Topics discussed include health science, law and public
safety, business, human services and other character education programs. These lessons are of
immeasurable value and mutually benefit the community.

Kids want to come to our program.
Only 8.4 million K-12 children (15 percent) participate in afterschool programs. An additional 18.5 million would
participate if a quality program were available in their community. (Afterschool Alliance, 2009). Although we’re
a relatively new program, word is spreading fast amongst students about how “cool” it is to go to Bailey Campus
after school. In addition to educational lessons, we provide a place for students to form meaningful relationships
with their peers. We also have a lot of fun with archery, cooking, golf, fishing and much more!

We won’t hurt your wallet.
Across the county, the average cost of a quality afterschool program is about $2500 per child annually. The
Pearland Afterschool Program averages only about $1500 annually for a resident child. Financial assistance
is also available for qualifying families who are Pearland residents. Not to mention, most parents miss an
average of eight days of work per year due to a lack of afterschool care. Decreased worker productivity related to
parental concerns about after school care costs businesses up to $300 billion per year according to a 2006 Brandeis
University study.

Why the Pearland Afterschool Program? It’s simple. We care about what’s important to you as a parent. Our staff is
a dedicated group of young professionals who have a passion for developing today’s youth and, with your support
of our program, we can help foster a new generation of community leaders.

Jazz Dance
Cost: $55 resident/$85 non-resident
Age: 6-9 years
Instructor(s): Stephanie’s School of Dance
Location: RCN
This laid back, fun class offers first-time and experienced dancers a time to socialize
with friends and get some exercise! Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves
and steps in their own way. Jazz is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves,
fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. Class atmosphere is casual and relaxed, so
dancers are more free to select their own clothing. A dancer’s body lines do need to be
visible, so baggy clothes are generally discouraged. Tights and leotards are fine, but
most jazz dancers prefer to wear jazz or dance pants. A minimum of 6 must register
one week prior to class start date. No class the week of Thanksgiving.

Character Counts
Helping to answer the call for renewed values and education reform, Pearland Parks
& Recreation has implemented CHARACTER COUNTS!, a framework centered on
basic values called the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility,
fairness, caring and citizenship.

The CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition is a partnership of hundreds of educational and
youth‐serving organizations who are committed to improving the ethical quality of
America’s young people. Since its beginnings in 1992, CHARACTER COUNTS! has be-
come a model for municipalities to turn around underperforming schools and change
school climate by instilling values and improving community resources all year long.
Here at Pearland Parks & Recreation, not only do we utilize the Six Pillars of Character
when developing programs, but we also celebrate its national observance each year
with the support of the President, the U.S. Senate, and governors and mayors who
acknowledge the importance of character building in young people.
