In seeking to raise the standard, as well as reduce the cost to the Province, Evening with Aggers
the PGM approved a new approach:-
Friday 25th November
1 Guided by the PGM, a small team was formed (Jim Williamson, Tony Sibson, Craft Provincial Grand Lodge
John Peberdy, Richard Jelly and myself) to take on a more strategic Tuesday 29th November
approach in looking to provide a quality and relevant, but value for money Master Masons/new Exaltees’

meant that each copy cost 50p each (excluding postage). Likewise our initial
aim is to breakeven (thus achieving that value for money objective).

understanding of the Masonic ethos and thereby be more responsive to
our needs. In this respect we are delighted that we have made a partnership

CHARITY NEWS
The Provincial Grand Master decided that last
year’s Christmas Collection would be split
between LOROS and more Teddies for the LRI.
The generosity of all the members brought
the total (incl Gift Aid) to over £12,000 to be
split between the 2 projects.
The LRMCA was approached by LOROS to help with a project
to bring a Garden that was being constructed at RHS Hampton
Court Show back to a courtyard at Glenfield. As it has been widely
acknowledged that time spent within or looking at a beautiful
garden can help a patient come to terms with an incurable illness
and provide a restful retreat for visitors & staff.
The LRMCA met with the project team from LOROS and ascertained
that the cost to bring the garden to LOROS was £15,000. After an
approach to the Grand Charity for a contribution it was decided
to pay the balance of £10,000 from the Christmas Collection and
LRMCA funds. This it was felt was a truly tangible way to demonstrate
Freemasonry working in the local Community.
Leicestershire & Rutland Freemasons were listed as a sponsor in the
literature given out at Hampton Court as well as a notice posted
at the garden that it was being taken away and being reconstructed
by your generosity.
The Provincial Grand Master and W.Bro. John Peberdy were invited to
Hampton Court to view the garden (which won a Show Silver medal).
A fuller story will be reported in the next edition but for those with
internet access, some photos/information are available for viewing at
www.lorosgarden.org.uk or http://gallery.me.com/simon.scmp#100429.
The formal opening of the Garden is scheduled later this year.

FREEMASONRY CARES
The Province of Leicestershire and Rutland is one of the first Provinces to launch
this initiative.

The launch took place nine months ago, in September 2010, Every Brother in the Province has been
when the Chief Executive of the Masonic Samaritan Fund, sent the Freemasonry Cares brochure

Provincial Officers, Worshipful Masters, Lodge Almoners and containing the details of the scheme,

can be requested and it is Square Advert Portraitt.pdf 1 has an 11:44
order that these will always be readily
available. In a covering letter the PGM
has asked the Brethren to ensure
that their families are aware of the
scheme and that the contact details
are available to them.
In a separate initiative the Province, through the Lodge
Almoners, has established a data base of all our Lodge
Widows. This allows the PGM to write to the widows to explain
the Freemasonry Cares initiative and enclose the Freemasonry
Cares Brochure, “credit Card” and key ring.
There is no doubt that with the help of Freemasonry Cares we
have been able to identify significant amounts of previously
unmet need amongst the Brethren, their families and
especially the Lodge Widows.
There has been over thirty direct enquiries to the central
Freephone number of which the vast majority have
received help from one of the Central Charities. However
it is also apparent that it has stimulated more requests for
help directly to the Provincial and Lodge Almoners, and
it is estimated that in all over 40 cases of need have been
identified and helped as a result of the Freemasonry Cares
initiative within our Province.

FREEMASONRY CARES
Your health is our concern
As it enters its 21st year the Masonic Samaritan Fund continues to support the
health and care needs of Freemasons and their dependants.
Please help us to reach all those who need our help.
Call 020 7404 1550 or visit www.msfund.org.uk
Support is available to:
• Freemasons
• The wives, partners and dependants of Freemasons
• The widows, surviving partners and dependants of deceased Freemasons who have an
identified health or care need and, faced with a long wait for treatment or care, cannot
afford their own private provision without incurring financial hardship.
MEDICAL The Fund will consider applications for a wide
variety of medical treatments from hip replacement to
cardiac surgery, from digital hearing aids to drug treatment
for cancer or degenerative diseases, from stomach banding
to macular degeneration.
DENTAL Applications are welcome where NHS
treatment is unavailable or where costs are in excess of
NHS charging rates. Financial help is provided in support
of dental treatment that is clinically necessary, in the most
cost-effective and efficient manner. Grants are not available
where the proposed treatment is purely cosmetic or where
an applicant simply prefers to receive private treatment.
RESPITE If you look after someone who needs support
because of a physical or learning disability, mental illness or
whose health is impaired by sickness or old age, and who,
without help, would not be able to cope with the demands
of basic living, then you are a carer. It is important that, as
a carer, you take time off for yourself. Grants are available
from the MSF to support carers. Funding is available towards
the cost of short periods of residential care or to provide
regular short breaks at home.
MOBILITy The Fund is also able to provide grants for the
supply and maintenance of mobility equipment, specialist
equipment or home adaptations in response to a specific
medical need.
For further information about any
of the above please contact the
Fund or your Lodge, or Provincial
Grand Almoner.

ANNUAL INITATES EVENING
Initiates’ Evening
On Wednesday 18th May 2011 the Annual Initiates’ Evening was held at Freemasons’
Hall, London Road, Leicester.
The event was very well supported and all those Brethren initiated within the previous 12 months, together with their wives
or partners who attended, were given a conducted tour of the building. They were also given talks on various aspects of
Freemasonry including the importance of charity and how the money we raise is donated to the various charities.
The evening concluded with a buffet and glass of wine when the Brethren their wives and partners who attended were able to
have an informal chat and ask further questions.

ASCOT DAY
Ascot Day
at Devonshire Court
The annual event of ASCOT Day @ RMBI
Devonshire Court took place at midday
on Sunday 5th June.
The last 3 outside fund-raising events had been affected by
rain, high winds or both. This year the weather was warm
and dry for once. A large outdoor screen was positioned at
one side of the area to show the racing. The computerised
races started almost immediately with a trial race to get
the uninitiated into the swing of things before lunch.
The ‘Friends’ committee had prepared a buffet lunch of cold
meats, salmon, quiche and salads followed by a vast choice
of desserts. The bar was also available for alcoholic and soft
drinks. While lunch was taken a group of singers from the
Kingsley Lodge in Northamptonshire entertained us all and
continued to do so throughout the afternoon between the
remaining seven races. It was possible to become an ‘owner’
for the duration of the race and the winning ‘owner’ in each
race was presented with a rosette and bottle of bubbly. The
Ladies were encouraged to wear hats and prizes were given
for the best Ladies hat and the best Lady Resident’s hat.
The warmer weather this year meant that more residents
than usual were able to take part in the event and joined in
on the lawns when the Province-wide raffle was drawn by the
President of the ‘Friends’, R.W.Bro. Derek Buswell.
All in all, a pleasant afternoon enjoyed by everyone having
raised over £5,000 and we extend an open invitation to next
year’s event!!! (weather almost guaranteed??)

serving lifeguard (79 years young –
50 years service).
He was likewise featured in the national Big Splash
campaign which sought to inspire the UK to swim!!
In the features it made references to his experiences as
a lifeguard for nearly 50 years starting with; rescuing
somebody from the River Soar at 15 years of age, rescuing
individuals as far and wide as USA, Bournemouth
Pier, Mablethorpe. He worked as a Lifeguard at the St
Margaret’s Swimming Pool as well as working with
disabled youngsters to learn to swim. In 1991 he trained
the swimming team for the Special Olympics and of the
29 that entered…29 won medals!!
He is still regularly recognised by individuals he
has trained or been involved with in swimming at
St Margaret’s Baths but is still involved in training
lifeguards at New Parks Leisure Centre… and plans to
continue doing so as long as he can.
Harry has completed a Triathlon, cycled around Rutland
Water, 27 hours in the Red Sea, swimming off the Cyprus
coast, 25 mile annual swims etc etc …all in aid of charity
fund raising.

Brothers-in-Law
Our congratulations are
extended to each Brother on this
most wonderful achievement,
which will no doubt be
acknowledged and celebrated by
When W.Bro. Ian Nesbitt was Worshipful Master of The their own Lodges in their own
Humber Stone Lodge (7744) in 2007, his then Senior unique way.
Warden Bro. Dean Newman (whom he subsequently
W.Bro. GF Hipwell (6794)
installed into the chair) suggested holding a Summer
Charity Garden Party.
W.Bro. CJ Hurst (4656)
It would be hosted by Dean and Christine Newman at their home in Broughton
Astley, with monies being donated to the 2012 Festival.
Everything was subsequently arranged and not only was the event well supported W.Bro. RJ Rosser (5208)
and money successfully raised for the 2012 Festival but it coincided with two of
their offspring meeting for the first time – Sam Nesbitt & Will Newman.
Suffice it to say that their incidental meeting blossomed in the months and years W.Bro. NW Lewin (5664)
ahead to the extent that on 30th April 2011 (the day after the Royal Will married
Kate) their own Will tied the knot with Sam at the village church in Mortehoe Devon,
a favourite holiday spot of the newlyweds. W.Bro. GG Wright (6406)
In fact so many people travelled to Devon for the occasion that the Watersmeet
Hotel was completely booked out all weekend solely for the wedding party. Apart

from a strong breeze the whole weekend remained warm with sunny intervals
throughout, with many guests walking on the beach, in the sea, along the footpaths
or socialising on the hotel verandahs.
W.Bro. JE Pickering (523)
The bride wore a beautiful silver gown and white veil with a jewelled tiara, the latter
being worn by her Mum Carole when she married her Dad W.Bro. Ian in 1972. The
bridesmaids were in a complimentary aubergine dresses, with the gentlemen in

It was a wonderful occasion for all concerned and just goes to show how masonry
can unexpectedly change lives for the better. Dean and Ian have been masonic W.Bro. WB Davis (779)
brothers and good friends since they joined The Humber Stone Lodge and both
were introduced by W.Bro. John McVey, who along with his wife Flo attended the
post wedding garden party on 29th May – yes at the home of W.Bro. Dean and Chris W.Bro. D Brown (8429)

Does the union of these two families now mean that W.Bro. Ian & W.Bro. Dean are

Table
Museum at
London Road
The Library and Museum at London
Road has recently acquired a valuable
and beautiful masonic artefact in the
form of a Pietre Dure marble table
containing a symbolic depiction of King
Solomon’s Temple.
Past Provincial Grand Secretary, W.Bro. Don Peacock
saw the item advertised in the auction catalogue of
Messrs Gildings of Market Harborough. R.W.Bro. David
Hagger authorised a bid, which was then made by W.Bro.
Walter Glover, and this was successful.
But what is Pietre Dure work? It translates as “hard stone”
and is a way of making pictures from slices of marble set
into a stone surface. A technique known to the Romans,
the art form was greatly developed by the Medici family in
16th Century Florence. For two centuries this was art for
Kings and Emperors, Popes and Potentates, but in the 19th
Century items were made for wealthy people of other social
classes. Our table dates from that time. It is early to mid
19th Century in date, about 1825. It is octagonal in form — a
square upon a square — and consists of a border in which
various jewels of office are depicted, all formed of marble
slices, and these surround the central picture of two pillars
and the entrance to the Temple standing on a chequered
pavement. The pattern is enriched by a “sky” made of the
semi precious stone Lapis Lazuli.
The table was formerly in private ownership in Nuneaton,
and how it came there is unknown. There are two similar
tables known to exist, one in New York and one in London,
but they differ from ours in detail. Further research into the
table and its antecedents is under way and will be reported
via the Lodge of Research, but in the meantime, Brethren If any Brother has any

ROYAL ARCH MATTERS
60 years a Royal Arch Mason!
At the February meeting of Wiclif Chapter (3078), E. Comp. Norman Pettit celebrated 60
years as a Royal Arch Mason. The meeting was attended by the Most Excellent Grand
Superintendent, E. Comp. Peter Kinder and many of his Provincial team.
This visit was not publicised as it was a planned surprise to E. Comp. Norman. At an appropriate moment the Grand
Superintendent interrupted the published agenda and requested the PGDC, E. Comp. Gerry Thurgar, to present E. Comp.
Norman Pettit to him. After congratulating him on his amazing achievement the MEGS asked the Provincial Scribe E,
E. Comp. John Townsend, to read a citation.
A framed copy of this document
was then presented to E. Comp.
Norman, accompanied by
enthusiastic applause from all
the Companions present.
To highlight the significance of
E. Comp. Norman’s achievement,
the MEGS noted that in February
1951, when Norman was exalted, he
was but a figment of his parents’
imagination.
On this same evening Bro. Colin
Frank Moore was exalted into the
Wiclif Chapter and welcomed into
The Royal Arch by the MEGS.
